Intuition The knowledge of your heart

For thousands of years Chinese philosophy and medicine has placed a great emphasis on the heart.

Acupuncture philosophy states that the heart is central because the heart (1) accumulates the most bio-energetic/ bio-electrical charge and (2) distributes this charge throughout the body via the cardiovascular system. These charges are found throughout your system and in every cell of your body. They play a role in the information exchange between and among your cells. These information exchanges contribute to your state of health.

In addition to the heart being a pump, Chinese philosophy indicates that the heart is an organ of perception. According to this, we literally ?intuitively see? with our hearts. Popular phrases used by the public suggest that people agree with the Chinese?we know that the heart perceives and knows. For example, everyone understands what someone means when they say ?I knew in my heart?? or ?My heart told me?.? Often these phrases are used to imply that the heart knew more than the brain or logical processes. James Stephens captures this when he states, ?What the heart knows today, the head will understand tomorrow.?

Today research in science and psychology are teaming up to prove that, indeed, your heart can perceive information before your head. For several years, psychologists and parapsychologists have been exploring the public?s ability to make accurate split-second assessments of people and/or situations. Folklore has always indicated that ?first impressions? are important, but science had been unable to provide supportive proof that this is true. If it did prove true in experimentation, it was always assumed to be a result of similarities between the present event and people?s previous experiences. People?s history, in other words, make them good guessers. Now research supports the accuracy of these first impressions (which we often label intuitive) and they appear not to be the result of a person?s previous history.

Nalini Ambady, a research psychologist at Tufts University, has been studying the accuracy of people?s first impressions with what she calls ?thin-slice? research. Ambady took video of graduate students teaching their classes. She then created 30 second ?thin-slices? of them teaching. To reduce the possibility of the researcher?s influencing the selection of the 30 seconds, Ambady and a colleague randomly selected 3 separate 10 second sections of video and sliced them together. They then showed these randomly selected 30 second silent videos to student judges. The ratings of the student judges were then compiled and compared with the teachers? end-of-the-semester evaluations. The correlation surprised researchers. In a follow-up study, Ambady shortened the clips to 15 seconds and then 6 seconds. Regardless of the length of the clips, the students predicted the most successful teachers. (For more information, see The Monitor, Vol. 36, March 2005.) How are these student judges able to perceive the truth so quickly?

Timothy O. Wilson, another researcher, offers one suggestion with his concept of the adaptive unconscious. Wilson states that every one of us gathers, sorts, and stores information, and even uses this information to make decisions without our conscious awareness. This process can happen within a split second. Wilson calls the mechanism that we are using to do this our adaptive unconscious and theorizes that it is established in people at a young age. Wilson?s book, Strangers to Ourselves, presents lots of research on how people know and evaluate quickly based on this nonconscious process. Wilson suggests that their may be a relationship between the adaptive unconscious and intuitive processes. Is the adaptive unconscious a source of our intuitive knowing?

Researchers at the HeartMath Research Center go further and offer another explanation?one which focuses on the knowledge of the heart. In 2004 The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (Volume 10, Number 1) researchers McCraty, Atkinson, and Bradley explore the electrophysicological evidence of intuition. These researchers also looked at split-second knowledge, but focus on the fact that the body, particularly the heart, responds to stimulus before being exposed to the stimulus. The stimulus in this case was emotionally arousing pictures. For example, imagine that you are walking down a street and are unaware that around the corner you will be exposed to a beautiful, breath-taking garden. According to this research, your heart can know in advanced that you will see a garden around the corner. In this case, even before you turn the corner, your body will suddenly be engulfed by a sense of calm and beauty?the same sense you would have if you actually had turned the corner. In other words, your heart appears to be able to ?see? around the corner and know a split-second earlier what is going to happen. This is also true with more disturbing emotional pictures. When HeartMath?s research subjects were going to be exposed to emotionally arousing and/or challenging pictures, their hearts responded in advance with even greater significance.

All these research results suggest that each of us has capacities for knowledge that go beyond our traditional understandings. The passion and emotions of the heart are also present in anecdotal accounts of intuition. It is self-evident that the people who demonstrated extraordinary intuition throughout history (for example, Einstein, Mozart, and Salk) are receiving information about topics and ideas with which they are passionately engaged. Musicians have intuition about music; scientists have intuition about science; physicians are intuitive about health care. Intuition seems to operate best in an atmosphere of passionate curiosity and dedication. Could this be because our hearts have the capacity to receive information? Is the ancient Chinese philosophy that our hearts are organs of perception correct?

Our understanding of intuition and how it operates are very preliminary. However, research does support that (1) you can pay attention to your first impressions and evaluate their accuracy as time unfolds, (2) your adaptive unconscious may be intelligently assessing your life and its circumstances and helping you to make decisions , and (3) your heart has an accuracy of its own. These concepts suggest that a good place to begin exploring intuition is in the areas of your life that you love.

As a sidenote discovery of my article on DRB, there was an implication that the qalb/heart is the locus of intuition and is the origination-point for certain things. See number 16 here.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

        Peace Wakas

***qalb is often used like the English word "heart", meaning the physical organ, but more often for the locus of feelings/intuitions etc.

The verse seems to imply then God will instil/cast terror into the heart/minds of those who reject, and then nature's forces take their course, resulting in affecting anything above the neck, e.g. the throat/mind/thoughts/senses/breathing and limbs/fingers of the rejecters, i.e. likely causing impairment of their performance. Instilling a sense of terror/fear in someone often results in their mind/thoughts/senses being affected/paralysed, and often results in trembling/shaking, especially transferring to the hands, which would likely result in weak fighting skills (swordsmanship or accuracy of arrows) when in battle. It is also interesting to note that when someone is fearful or anxious/nervous, their throat often becomes dry and precipitates an involuntary gulp reaction, i.e. a manifestation of fear/anxiety. Physical manifestations of anxiety trouble concentrating, feeling like your mind's gone blank, dizziness, shortness of breath, muscle tension, fatigue, headaches (source).

I read the parts of your article/text that is about heart meaning feelings/intution. And i agree with your views. By the way, i myself, personally have recently started to believe this as well. Because often our intuition tells us to do something, like it is guiding us. For example once i took a wrong job, and my intuiton made me feel bad, and it was like it was telling me to quit the job. Sometimes when i get a bad feeling/intuiton about something, and steer away from it, something good may happen to me afterwards. Intuiton is truly powerful, and should not be suppressed. If we challenge our ego constantly, by following our intuiton as often as possible, i think our intuition will grow stronger. Just like a muscle If you use it, it grows, if you don't use it, it comes back to normal. However, it is easier to say something than to do something. Following our intuition is not easy. Because it challenges our ego and desires. It's the rival of ego (that's the way i see it). Inuition can be a threat to conformity and safety. The truth is in our heart (about doing the right thing), put people don't want to listen to their hearts. Most people suppress their intuition most of the time. And i am guilty of suppressing my intuition as well. I have suppressed my intution countless of times. Maybe i am even doing it right now. Who knows. Sometimes i feel that the best thing to do is to quit my current lifestyle and instead start to follow my other goals and dreams. Do something courageous, like for example move to another country, or start my own business. Gamble with my life. But i don't know if it is my intuition that is telling me this, or if it is my ego/selfish desire/evil force that is trying to fool me. How can we distinguish between ego/lust and intution? On small matters it is easy to distinguish between intuition and ego, but on big matters such as a total lifestyle change, it seems almost impossible to distinguish between them. Conformity does not give huge amounts of success, but i guess that it is human nature to follow the safest path. Then again, that which is safe does not give huge rewards. From what i read, almost all great men in the history went against the majority, against traditions, norms and other things which limit people, and instead they followed their own dreams. And they followed their own dreams totally. With deep conviction that they will make it. That they will do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals. I guess, if we do not dare, we will not win. And "If we keep doing what the majority do, we will get the same results as the majority get". It seems like there are no recipes for total success. Those who want to get huge rewards, have to follow their intuition, they have to gamle, and they have to follow their gut feeling. So as we can see, "Total success has no recipe".

Some people follow their intution constantly. Immortal technique might be one of those of those people. He creates his own recipes. At least it seems so. He says the following in one of his texts.

And since life is a gamble like the crabstables at Vegas
I freestyle my destiny, it's not written in pages

        • Immortal technique

The fact that he says he "freestyles his destiny", if i interpret that the right way, he is telling us that he follows his intuition. Freestyling your destiny is the same as following your intuition. Because deep inside our heart, we know what we have to do. And "we have to do the right thing". Wow. What a life P

People think it is something magical about the rate of success of immortal technique, but they forgot that we are all human beings and are restricted by the laws of nature. Everybody get the same chance for accomplishment. Those who accomplish more are just people who have gambled more, worked harder, and sacrificed more. That's all. There is nothing magical about that. Of course some people might have more or less talent, but i believe that if everyone reach their full potential, they will have recreated themselves into an unbelieveable success being. A being that can accomplish huge things with its natural potentials (abilities that distinguish it from other people). If people compete with no one but themselves, then only the sky will be their limit. Because those who compete with others, they set others as a standard to reach, and by doing that they will limit themselves. And he who is limited, he will not constantly grow. And he will certainly not climb high. some people even claim that there are certain myths certain genius

        http//lateralaction.com/articles/you-dont-need-to-be-a-genius/

Does the verse below tells us that people suppress their intuition (what their heart is telling them) by living in denial? I think we have an inner feeling/intution which tells us what is right or wrong, and that is my interpretation of the verse below.

        Quran 7179
And We have given to Hell many of the Jinn and mankind; they had hearts with which they did not understand, and they had eyes with which they did not see, and they had ears with which they did not hear. They are like livestock; no, they are even more astray. These are the unaware ones.

What is your interpretation about the heart?

There are other verses that tells us about the heart as well

1736 And do not uphold what you have no knowledge of. For the hearing, eyesight, and heart, all these you are responsible for.

1828 And have patience upon yourself regarding those who call on their Lord at dawn and dusk seeking His face, and let not your eyes overlook them that you seek the beauty of this worldly life. And do not obey he whom We have made his heart heedless of Our remembrance and he followed his desire, and his fate was lost.

1443 They will approach with their heads bowed, and their eyes will not blink, and their hearts will be void.

4626 And We had established them in the same way as We established you, and provided them with hearing, and eyesight, and hearts. But their hearing, eyesight, and hearts did not help them at all. This is because they used to disregard the revelations of God, and they will be surrounded by that which they used to mock.

It seems that whenever God mentiones the hearing and the eyesight, the heart is mentioned with them
        http//free-minds.org/quran/search

In the verse below it says that those who take their desire as their God, god will lead them astray and seal their heart. Does God seal their intuition? Because if
Heart = intution, then maybe this means that God will take away their intution. Maybe those who suppress their intuition to much, eventually will lose it. There are lots of laws of nature and things about human beings that are still not discovered by science. For example, modern science still know very little about intution and its role. So Quran is ahead of time when it comes to "intuition". Here is the verse by the way

4523 Have you seen the one who took his desire as his god, and God led him astray, despite his knowledge, and He sealed his hearing and his heart, and He made a veil on his eyes? Who then can guide him after God? Will you not remember?

          peace,

I have not studied it in detail, but I can give you my preliminary thoughts AQ implies that the qalb/heart is the origination-point for certain things, e.g. see the example I referred to previously. It implies that the source/God can affect this part of someone, and I would assume, it is because this part that is closest to the source/God. Hence maybe 4914 where it talks of belief entering one's qalb/heart. Since this part of someone is their deepest self, it implies a complete conviction, the final and highest stage of God's system or faith. It would be interesting to see if such a phrasing is used for other aspects of a person, I doubt it.

          So, basically, we have
intuition / heart has a more core function or takes precedence over thinking/reasoning (maybe because it is primarily related to processing external info coming in, as opposed to internal info coming from within, i.e. from the qalb/heart). It does seem they can affect each other however, perhaps by different degrees.

This could be related to other areas, e.g. feeling guilty if you do something bad, or gut feeling. I know that in some books they will discuss "being" as being different to one's mind/thinking etc. Maybe this is what they are referring to.
