Exact meaning of 2:149

Firstly, sorry if there has been a detailed discussion about this already. I searched for 2149 and was yielded nothing - and a search for qibla receives about a billion results.
So this is what is puzzling me
From whencesoever Thou startest forth, turn Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque; that is indeed the truth from the Lord. And Allah is not unmindful of what ye do.
I understand that some of you have a completely different understanding of Masjid al-Haram. I would like to hear it, as this ayah indicates that our understanding of it is incomplete.
Could it simply mean "and keep God in your mind in whatever you are doing, wherever it is" ?
