Assalamu alaikum I am new to this forum and I will just outline a littler of where I am coming from as I am now sure how I feel fits in here.

I became a Muslim, that is I recited the shahada about 4 years ago. But for many years I have believed in the Oneness of God absolutely. I also believed that certain humans had their minds opened by God to receive revelations of His existence and purpose for us. But we are humans, a social animal that needs to share everything with our kind. Religion is no different. The only religion that meets this is Islam.

Now up until this time my study was my relationship with God. As the Qur'an tells us that Islam is simple and easy, fair and equitable, that puts no burden of those who follow the Book. I was in for some surprises.

My first shock was the tesbih beads and the chanting that goes along with it. I tried this for about a year but stopped because it did nothing to bring me closer to God. If it works for some then it's OK.

Next I find that there is many versions of Islam all disagreeing with each other. I find practices that I thought should not exist such as Mawlid. Then I found the worst of these in Sufism that best is described as a controlling religious cult.

I have been reading Mohammed Asad and agree with him that we to get back to the beginning and remove the Sheiks as they are the ones that have confounded Islam.

Ahadith? Well is do not reject ahadith I use common sense when reading them. My own approach is to find the answer in the Qur'an first and if I can't get the answer or it is not clear to me I look for a hadith.

Now tell me is this where this group is going or is it trying to form another religion.

    Wa salaam

    welcome

We may be in the same boat as I am not a "Quran Alone" Muslim (I actually don't like any other term besides Muslim), however I do put the Quran first and view it as the criterion for anything else.

With that being said, I am very comfortable in this forum. It's a great place to exchange ideas and hear different opinions. We may sit on different branches but we all come from the same tree. We are trying our best to understand the will of the only one to be worshiped, Allah, and submit to his will.

We are all brothers and sisters. group

May Allah forever guide us closer together, and closer to the truth.

wa alaikum salam to you. I am new too and I certainly hope that is the way its going here and not forming a new religion! From my reading here I have found 'the opposition' to Quran alone as in some sunni muslims who are strongly disagreeing with Quran and God alone insisting that hadith are as important as Quran to understand Islam. Some posters have strange ideas, by that I dont mean they are wrong.....or right...just at a different level in thinking and searching than others.

      ;D

There is no such 'group', only a collection of individuals who chip away at the superstructure of sunnism.

ANOTHER religion? Dude, we didn't do any thing of the sort. We're trying to find the ORIGINAL religion. Thanks to the hadith folks, that's been lost under all debris of folk tales.

                Assalamu alaikum,
Thank you everyone for the welcome and trying to make me feel comfortable. This question of Islam needs more answers and I will try to persue these qestions on this board.
But to be honest I feel as if I was more of a Muslim before I entered organisational Islam. To me I feel that I am trapped in a maze that is blocking my access to Allah. Certainly the Qur'an is the clear path but can I do this with others? Not all the reading I have been doing has made me feel comfortable.

You can do this here with others but your path to Allah is between you and Him, no one else. use this to throw your thoughts around and read others thoughts.

You say Quran is the clear path so the answers you need are the ones regarding 'muslims' as a majority and Islam as they have come to practice it including all its 'traditions' which are nothing to do with the clear path. Many here are seeking those same answers. As with any maze there will be those trying to block your path and keep you in the 'traditional Islam' path, away from the clear path but there will also be support for staying on the clear path.

                  im rambling now ;D

why not advise to get answers from Quran and Allah? If this forum is not to be listened to or to help one find answers, what are you doing here?

Hi and welcome, Jakamarra, I'm a newbie too. peace

Rest assured that you are not the only person feeling that way. I know lots of people who converted because they felt Islam was what they had been looking for, only to feel overwhelmed by a multitude of rules, regulations, contradictions and cultural traditions disguised as religious practice.

Many also feel that following all those things did not make them feel closer to God, quite the opposite. A friend who has been a "progressive" Muslim for many years but got initially sucked in by the Salafi movement once said that there was a point where she felt that God, who she had always felt being present, was suddenly "very, very far away". That's when she started researching and questioning things for herself and arrived at her own understanding of religion.

The problem is that it takes a lot of strength and dedication to follow that path because it can be difficult to go against what the majority, or the scholars, or the books are telling you. It requires some courage and the willingness to trust your own mind and your inner voice, because that is your direct line to God, so to speak.

Don't let people scare you into believing that you should not trust yourself, that your inner voice / heart / intuition is just your nafs -- or the shaytan -- speaking. Those people have an image of God that is based on fear, they believe in a system of reward and punishment and are not able to see the deeper meaning yet. It is easier for them to stick to a set of rules and do what's being told to them by their leaders / scholars / authorities, than trying to look inside and find out the truth for themselves.

My personal advice would be to keep an open mind and read as much as you can, from all sources. Explore your doubts and questions, put your thoughts out there and exchange them with others. Don't be afraid to question established rules and anything you find contradictory. Trust yourself, but be willing to revisit and change your opinion, if necessary.

Best of luck on your path. handshake

Good advice Leyna. I'd like to add islam is very simple. It's all about bringing God into our lives. We do that by bringing good into the world. This is all it's about. Everything else is fluff. You don't even need Quran for that but still, its the best map I've ever known.

This is one of the best advises yet but all has quality. I have been looking at Quor'an only sites and doing more reading. My impression is this concert is as extreme as Salafism> A good analogy would be in politics the extreme right and left, of Fascism and Communism. When you find jargon being used you know all is not well. They talk about being 'God Only' there is many religions that are God Only Judaism and the Walpiri (Indigenous people of Central Australia) the latter probably is more so. Why are they calling themselves 'Submitters' what is wrong with the correct English word 'Muslim'. I defy anyone to so otherwise by showing me an English dictionary that does not have Muslim in it. I would also say to such people, yes the word is Arabic but take out of the non English words and we would not have a workable English language.
Because our awareness of Allah is a personal one we must find that relationship with Allah in our own hearts. When we go to the Mosque to pray, we pray to Allah in the company of our brothers and sisters. I have just prayed Fajr and after the Tasleem the imam chanted all this Sufi stuff that I sat there and ignored but still giving respect.
No trying to form another division within Islam on the idea that this is getting back to the original concept is joining the Salafis who say the same thing.
Finally I am shocked to see some very odd translations of the Qur'an . What is wrong with Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Mohamed Asad.
No Qur'an Only - God Only what every you want to call it is not for me. I wish you well in your search.

What's in a name? You can call yourself whatever you like. You can't say that the correct English word is 'Muslim' because muslim is an Arabic word. The English translation is Submitter, which is actually an adjective not a noun.

You can choose whatever translation you like but you need to remember to double check some meaning yourself to make sure as there are some meanings translators themselves never agree on. Here is a good tool http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm
