    Musaleen; those who perform salat.

    There are 3 verses (7022, 7443, 1074) in relation to musaleen (that i found) though they need to be read in context to render a significant meaning.

    Verse 7022
    7019 (Asad) VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition
    7020 (Asad) whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity;
    7021 (Asad) and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it .
    7022 (Asad) Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer.
    7023 (Asad) who incessantly persevere in their prayer

    The characteristics of musaleen is described further in later verses. Asad?s notes of the verse are interesting, i?ll share them

    This, I believe, is the meaning of the expression al-musallin (lit., "the praying ones&quot, which evidently does not relate here to the mere ritual of prayer but, rather, as the next verse shows, to the attitude of mind and the spiritual need underlying it. In this sense it connects with the statement in verse 19 that "man is born with a restless disposition" which, when rightly used, leads him towards conscious spiritual growth, as well as to freedom from all self-pity and selfishness.(Quran Ref 7022 )

    Asad recognises the benefit isn?t in the ritual deed. according to PRL the musaleen are those who follow closely, if musaleen follow quran closely inevitably their spiritual growth will prosper hence the musaleen not feeling self-pity makes sense.

    Verse 7443
    7442 (Asad) "What has brought you into hell-fire?"
    7443 (Asad) They will answer "We were not among those who prayed;
    7444 (Asad) and neither did we feed the needy;
    7445 (Asad) and we were wont to indulge in sinning together with all who indulged in it;
    7446 (Asad) and the Day of Judgment we were wont to call a lie ?
    7447 (Asad) until certainty came upon us ."

    Again in asad?s notes the musaleen (the ones who pray) are not described as the traditional sense prayer but rather conscious belief in God, which recognises the overall concept of salat is upholding a bond, a conscious connection with God.

    Verse 1074
    1074 (Asad) Woe, then, unto those praying ones
    1075 (Asad) whose hearts from their prayer are remote

    This verse is clear that the musaleen should be mindful of their salat i.e. be aware/reflect about what they say/do.

    There are other verses which relates to believers and sala if you want to go into them share your thoughts.

    (e.g. 7531, 8715, 9610, 3356, 1082)

    Peace

        107/5 to me means 'those who with regards to their salat are remote'

        the word hearts isnt actually in the ayah.

        This also shows there are two kinds of musalleen

        1. Those who are khushu3 and hafiz of their salaat (as per 23/1-11)

        2. Those who are remote about their salat (107/5).

          Wakas,

          just read your translation in relation to mu'an. i haven't read a whole collection of translations but anyway did you read asad's comments? i don't think it's way off from what you're saying

          The term al-ma?un comprises the many small items needed for one's daily use, as well as the occasional acts of kindness consisting in helping out one's fellow-men with such items. In its wider sense, it denotes "aid" or "assistance" in any difficulty.(Quran Ref 1077 )

          I guess asad emphasises the helping with small deeds whereas you recognise mu`an as something more "far-reaching deeds" i had a look at prl

          Miim-Ayn-Nun = went far or to a great or extraordinary length therein, went deep or beyond bounds in the thing/affair, the drawing of water, charity, small kindness, neighbourly needs, succour.

          So maybe mu`an is abit of both, from far fetched deeds i.e going into great efforts or even small acts of kindness??

          Abdalquran,

          you?re right, no heart is mentioned. I just used asad?s translation for consistency.

          True it shows how some people can be remote /not dedicated in their salah

            peace,

            Well, using logic, I weighted the answer in favour of far-reaching deeds, because since they want to be seen, then if they withhold common deeds then that doesn't make sense because common deeds are commonly seen, however if they withhold far-reaching/deep/beyond the surface deeds, then that makes sense, i.e. they are all about superficial display, nothing deeper.

              is connected to since after there is no conjunction "Waw". does not relate "far-reaching deeds, because since they want to be seen". The verb form is III basic meanings are caustive to make oneself a participle. Earlier it has been told that they stand for As-salat only for showing it to people to confirm their claim of having believed. And then another peculiar feature/psyche of these people is indicated with conjunction waw.

                Hmm I was thinking about this.

                Mazhar, I think you?re right that the ma`un links to the musaleen (if that?s what you?re trying to say, I don?t know much about the waw issue)

                I think I can deduce why Wakas came with farfetched. ...

                The verse starts off by talking about those yukathibu bil-deen; they repel orphans nor feed the needy (helping orphan, feeding needy may = farfetched?). So then it goes on.. woe on those musaleen who want to be seen but they?re unmindful of their salat, they want to be seen yet withdraw from mu`an.

                They?re basically just doing salat for show. I don?t necessarily think it matters if they withdraw from far-fetched deeds or not but it shows one thing clearly, that those who kathibu just wanna use deen for show no mind/thought into it. Helping orphans, feeding needy shows empathy, shows care, shows thought hence why I think Wakas chose far-fetched because those unmindful ones don't wanna partake in such deeds..

                that's how i understood it

                peace.

                  It is always good, and the only appropriate manner of studying Qur'aan is that its text be kept before eyes.

                  Have you thought about the (psyche of) one who publicly contradicts the Day of Judgment?

                  For this reason he is the one who repulses/rebuffs the orphan;

                  and neither persuades (himself/others) to feed the destitute/indigent.

                  This is one psyche. His response is like this

                  those who have knowingly refused to accept/believe said for those who have accepted/believed, "Should we feed that one whom if Allah willed He would have fed him.

                  You people are not but in manifest forgetfulness"
                  YaSeen

                  Then there is a group who are claimants of having believed. They are a combination of two, one is termed Munafiq.

                    peace,

                    Sarah, I said "far-reaching" not "far-fetched".

                    Mazhar, I do not understand how you use the grammar info to evidence what you're saying. If anything, it is neutral or supports my view.

                    Earlier it has been told that they stand for As-salat only for showing it to people to confirm their claim of having believed.

                    Where is "it" in the grammar? That is your pre-conceived notion.

                    As I said, small/common deeds are common, thus if a person wishes to make display only for show, they do not refuse common deeds, this would expose them rather easily and goes against logic. My understanding is based on the root (see Lane), and logic.

                    All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.
