Root R-H-M
-
Peace all,
This is essentially to ask/confirm if rahman and raheem come from the same root as is seems to be and if so...
I wanted to ask what the meaning of the root rhm is (in different dictionaries etc)...as we can see in the quran study and translation, under the thread surah rahman...brother ayman and i think a sister's conclusion as well as dr. sharour? (hope i got that right) think that rahman stands for retribution, as far as i can understand...
Now, it might or might not be plausible in practise to have dramatically different meanings for one root...but then again, for mercy and compassion and benefiance (is that a word?) to come from one root is understandable, as they are essentially having some similarity...but if it's retribution then its poles apart...evokes power and might and authority (justice?) imo...
While doing my study on roots, i understood that words coming from the same root are essentially similar but can have different meanings...but even the vast majority of different meanings are derived from the basic meaning of that root...so hoping someone can explain this apparent aberration...linguistically or otherwise...and give some examples of root words having dramatically different meanings...
Thanks!
Nadia
