Transliteration Wa-ith qalati almala-ikatu ya maryamu inna Allaha istafaki watahharaki waistafaki AAala nisa-i alAAalameena

Literal And when the angels said "You, Mary, that God chose/purified you , and purified you , and chose/purified you over the creations all together/(universes&#039 women."

Angels is in plural, more than one Angel addressed her, according to this translation.

Transliteration Ith qalati almala-ikatu ya maryamu inna Allaha yubashshiruki bikalimatin minhu ismuhu almaseehu AAeesa ibnu maryama wajeehan fee alddunya waal-akhirati wamina almuqarrabeena

Literal When the angels said "You Mary, that God announces good news to you, with a word/expression from Him, his name (is) the Messiah Jesus Mary's son, noble in the present world/near and the end (other life), and from the neared/closer."

Notice how in this verse as well, angels are plural, more than one angel delivered this message to Mary about the glad tidings of a noble boy. From this translation anyway.

Transliteration Qalat rabbi anna yakoonu lee waladun walam yamsasnee basharun qala kathaliki Allahu yakhluqu ma yashao itha qada amran fa-innama yaqoolu lahu kun fayakoonu
Literal She said "My Lord, how is (it) for me (a) child and not (a) human touched me?" He said "Like that/that is it, God creates what He wills/wants if He ordered a matter, so but He says to it 'Be.' So it is/will be."

Only one angel answers her. Yet in 342, 45 angels are addressing her

Transliteration Faittakhathat min doonihim hijaban faarsalna ilayha roohana fatamaththala laha basharan sawiyyan

Literal So she took from other than them a divider/protection , so We sent to her Our Soul/Spirit , so he simulated/represented to her (as an) upright/average human.

In the above, it is singular, one soul/spirit/angel that is sent to give Mary the glad tidings of a son (I understand that Gabriel is the Holy Spirit)

Transliteration Qala innama ana rasoolu rabbiki li-ahaba laki ghulaman zakiyyan
Literal He said "Truly I am your Lord's messenger to grant/present for you a pure/righteous boy ."

Singular, only one angel is informing her of the glad tidings of a pure/righteous boy.

Transliteration Qala kathaliki qala rabbuki huwa AAalayya hayyinun walinajAAalahu ayatan lilnnasi warahmatan minna wakana amran maqdiyyan
Literal He said "'Like that,' said your Lord, it is on Me easy/light , and to make/put him (as) a sign/evidence to the people, and mercy from Us, and (it was) a matter/command accomplished/ executed .'"

This does not contradict 347, once more it is one Angel who answers.

Why does the story from Sura 3 involve more than one angel initially addressing her, and the story from sura 19 involve only Gabriel initially addressing her?

Can someone point me in the direction to understanding why there is a difference in these two stories? why Sura 342, 45 mention a group of angels addressing her with glad tidings, and why Sura 1917-21 mention only Gabriel addressing her?

I think they are just describing different situations. See the first one the angels (plural) say
345 And the angels said "O Mary, God gives you glad tidings of a word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary. Honorable in this world and in the Hereafter, and from among those who are made close."

Whereas in singular, it is a different message being said

1919 He said "I am the messenger of your Lord, to grant you the gift of a pure son."

So I would say both events happened.

You know I actually prayed to God every night after coming across this to help me understand this and to help me not rush and act in haste into understanding this. Thank you very much for pointing out what should have been obvious to me. May God be pleased with you.

In my opinion Ch 3 and ch 19 are not the same instance so therefore they aren't contradictions. In ch3 the Malaika (angels) come to Maryam while in Ch 19 the word Ruhana (our spirit) is used. There is a big misunderstanding amongst muslims on the what the meaning of ruh is. In my opinion it cannot mean Gabriel or Angel in any part of the Quran. Transliteration Faittakhathat min doonihim hijaban faarsalna ilayha roohana fatamaththala laha basharan sawiyyan. Roohana is translated to mean our spirit and basharan meaning man/human being. So It says our spirit appeared as a human being not Gabriel or Angel appeared as a human being. Some people will argue that angels can appear as men but that would be speculation on their part to think thats the case in this verse given the fact that the arabic word malak doesn't appear in the verse nor does Jibriel appears in arabic. If it was Jibriel then why doesn't it say Jibriel in Arabic??? I have read tafsir on this verse 1917 and found that people like Wahb ibn munnabih are the ones who supposed that it was refering to Gabriel. Wahb was a tabi'in (never met the Prophet) who was known for quoting isralliat hadith. I have never seen an authentic hadith which states that The Messenger of Allah or his Companions having said that the roohana in verse 1917 was in fact Gabriel or an Angel. The basher (man) in Ch 19 may as well be the biological father of Isa (pbuh) however that man wasn't Gabriel or an Angel which deals a severe blow to the virgin birth theory which muslims claim the Holy Quran supports. My understanding is the Holy Quran proves that Isa (pbuh) had an biological father which can be supported from many other verses in the Quran. This is my understanding however, Allah Knows Best !!!
