Closing eyes during prayer

I hope this subject hasn't been discussed previously, but I used the search function and couldn't find anything.
I have been wondering why traditional prayer instructions always say you should not close your eyes. What is this based upon?
To me personally, it seems that closing your eyes during prayer, meditiation etc. can help you focus more and avoid distraction. Why should it be wrong?Peace,
Respect.I don't close my eyes during prayer because i personally am focused on what i am doing but i don't see such a prohibition or a command regarding it in The Quran.

from watching Sunni's and Shia's....it seems like almost all of them Close their eyes.
I close my eyes when I pray If I am in a Safe Environment (room) because it helps me focus,
however I Keep my eyes Open if I am in an Unsafe Area/time while praying (Driving a Car Obviously!
o that would really be bad Driving!! lol

Thanks. It's interesting that the fatwas say it is disliked but don't give a particular reference. And that one fatwa says it is preferred not to do it, yet is was supposedly the practice of the prophet to close his eyes.

yes you can while driving a camel.

No way!!! They are too big and they sway.
Since I've been living in Egypt for years, people have often tried to convince me to get on top of a camel, but I always declined. Somehow it seems like such a tacky, touristy thing to do. However, in my favourite place in Sinai some of the Bedouins offer day trips on camels, and that is something I might try one day.

Respect.I would LOVE to raide on a camel or a horse, since i haven;t done on the actyal animals but rather the "clones" of it. When i travel with an airplane .... how many horse/camel power is that? confused
When it comes to closing the eyes during the prayer, see, what i noticed is that it's not the only thing that separates us from them. They also put right foot upwards during sitting position and i don't. They see me do this and wonder. I don't lose time with that.
Trust God and rely on Him.

Yeah, I try to make a Small Duaa before or When I am Driving for Safety. I ask Allah to let my Journey be safe (inshallah).
I personally feel safer so..I like it.Also, If I am driving and Miss a Salaat, sometimes I may Drive and Pray at the same time.
Meaning...Keeping my eyes open, and just Reciting the Quran (Fatiha) and the Regular things you say and then adding a Duaa.
(Subhanna rabbielazeem, Subhanna Rabbialalah)..etc....I Personally Like the Physical Prostration Ritual Prayer when I am at a House or Stopped Location, But I also Like to do the Reciting Salaat when I am in Motion (like Driving) or at a Place where I cannot do it (work, etc).
After I told a Man at the Masjid that I feel bad because I cannot pray or miss it...He told me I had NO EXCUSE...because I could just Easily have Prayed (recited) in the Car, or On a Plane or wherever!....He was Right. God Is the Most Understanding, and I have no excuse.
I think Prayer could be done anywhere (clean) and with eyes Open or Closed.
Remember Prayer is a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with GOD....Therefore You should do what best enhances your Connection with Allah.(infact, sometimes Praying Outdoors Enhances your Connection I think. just ask Brother Abdun Nur! He wrote an Article about Prostrating outdoors and its benefits. Of course he doesnt believe in Prayer to Allah (as his view of Allah is a little more confusing to some) but the main point is, is that Prostration on the Ground is a Benefit both Him and (Ritual-Prayer followers) Agree on. (even a Sunni Iman agrees that Praying Outside is better for you)

I love horseback riding. To me, it's very meditative, but at the same time you're getting a good workout.
Some weeks ago I went riding in the forest with a small group of people. It was sunny, but cool, the earth still wet from previous rain. I enjoyed it tremendously ... taking in the sights and smells, focussing on being in tune with the movements of the horse, enjoying the speed when galloping. I felt great for two whole days afterwards.

having been on a camel I can say they are very high up and the praying I did was not to fall off!
back in UK when I had a car I did used to recite on my way to work, it helped to calm me for the day ahead, with eyes on the road of course ;D
When I was working here I used to recite on the way to work too while walking up the road to the bus
When doing the prostration prayer I do prefer to close my eyes though, as leyna said it helps with the 'meditation'

I close my eyes. Not because I feel I have to or need to, but that's just how I do it, I think it helps me remember/recall things to give thanks for/things to ask forgiveness for.
I try to remember to ask for forgiveness for particular/specific things, sometimes I ask for forgiveness for things which I have forgotten/things which I should but do not remember to ask forgiveness for.
