A mouseover verse reference

Funny you should mention this because about 2-3 weeks ago I asked some programmers to look into this functionality. Not only for a forum, but as a browser extension, similar to google chrome's dictionary look-up extension/plugin, i.e. by double-clicking on it, a bubble pops up with the dictionary meaning.
e.g. like https//chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mgijmajocgfcbeboacabfgobmjgjcojawww.quranix.net has this functionality for its Quran notes. The programmer behind this site is one of those whom I contacted.
If the above is too complex, another tool suggested was for Quranic article writers, i.e. if they reference verses they can run their article through a script and it makes all verse references pop-up like quranix.net does.
As for the forum version, I assume it would need to contact a database or site that could provide the translation. It would save a few seconds, and would be useful.
I will let you all know what the programmers come up with, if anything. As a side note, if any programmers out there feel they could develop something like this, feel free to personal message me. StudyQuran can even pay for it to be developed if needed.
Awesome idea. I know that Edip has this sort of functionality on his Quranix.net page, I really enjoy it.

There has been some developments. )
The following is an ok temporary solution whilst a better solution is developed. I estimate it cuts down looking up a Quran reference on a web page by about 25-50% which is not bad.
For Firefox users, install the extension

https//chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ddhagkdkfhahblenhokndjgjohonjchl?hl=enOnce installed, open up the options for that extension. For example, in Chrome, this can be found top right (spanner icon). Uncheck all the default sites, click on "add/edit custom sites", then "add new site", under "site name" call it whatever you want, e.g. free-minds Quran, in "site url" put http//free-minds.org/quran/PM/$$/
then click "ok", "save" and "close".Now, what should happen is whenever you double click on the chapter part of a chapter and verse reference, e.g. double clicking on 17 of the following

It will bring up an icon which you hover over with your mouse pointer, it automatically brings up the extension box, you may need to select the lookup you want to use (i.e. whatever you named it before, e.g. free-minds Quran), then it will bring up that chapter of the free-minds translation, then simply scroll down to the verse you want to read. You can also resize the window.
When you've done it once, it will keep the free-minds Quran as your default lookup and size of window, until you switch browser windows or restart your browser. So the first time you do it is the longest time, but after that it works out quicker.

Yes, you can use any link to any translation, however the website address format must be of a specific type. You would then replace the chapter number in the verse address with $$
The following programmer has modified his site to incorporate the plugin better
For example, to use Asad's translation, insert
http//www.openquran.org/index.php?fav=on&url=oq_display.php&sura=$$&allsura=2&edition=asadThen as per normal, when you click on a chapter number, the box pops up, and at the top left you will see it says "number of verses (total)" click on that to give you a link to each verse, then select the verse you want, or just scroll to it. You can also click verses previous/after to give you the context.
To choose another translation, change the word ?asad? at the end of the link to one of these translations

If you want to get fancy, you can use this site to lookup roots in a verse automatically and dictionary references, by using

You can use it with many sites, e.g. Corpus
http//corpus.quran.com/translation.jsp?chapter=$$But of course, it's not great. I think in the future this can be improved with a dedicated website for this plugin, if it proves useful. I think with the simple free-minds Quran I'll likely make use of it, should save me some time.

after installing and restarting Firefox -
Go to a webpage that discusses Quran, such as http//free-minds.org/

When the page has loaded, click the extension icon, which for now is a little magnifying glass.

All Quran refs in the form xy should be detected and a yellow border drawn around them.

As the text of the verses is being loaded in the background, the refs will get a yellow background.

Hover over one of the highlighted references and a white on black popup should appear with the Arabic text of the verse.

Double click the popup to cycle through the available versions of the text.

Single click to close the popup.

I made some more progress on this extension, please re-download to get the latest, and please use this address instead http//lrhazi.com/q/QuranRefsFinder.xpi
The changes were mainly to add support for reference spans, in the form of 11-7, but required some changes to the way the extension works.
- To close tooltip, click on the verse text.
- To move to next verse in a span series, click on the ref, the verse number.
- To move to the next version of the text of the same verse, click the version name.
