Usage of the word Dabbatin

This thread is in response to some posts regarding the usage of the word dabbatin as is commonly equated to beasts in the quran...can it be creatures? Are all 'beasts' sentient? Do all 'beasts' know/understand God?Are there 'dumb' beasts unaware of God?

Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of the night and the day; in the sailing of the ships through the ocean for the profit of mankind; in the rain which Allah Sends down from the skies, and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dead; in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth; in the change of the winds, and the clouds which they Trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth;- (Here) indeed are Signs for a people that are wise.822
For the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb,- those who understand not.855
For the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are those who reject Him They will not believe.2218
Seest thou not that to Allah bow down in worship all things that are in the heavens and on earth,- the sun, the moon, the stars; the hills, the trees, the animals; and a great number among mankind? But a great number are (also) such as are fit for Punishment and such as Allah shall disgrace,- None can raise to honour for Allah carries out all that He wills.3110
He created the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs.3528
And so amongst men and crawling creatures and cattle, are they of various colours. Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge for Allah is Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.4229
And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has scattered through them and He has power to gather them together when He wills.4504
And in the creation of yourselves and the fact that animals are scattered (through the earth), are Signs for those of assured Faith.Now for where we can think that they are sentient and/or in the sense that they understand the concept of God

To Solomon We inspired the (right) understanding of the matter to each (of them) We gave Judgment and Knowledge; it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises, with David it was We Who did (all these things).2441
Seest thou not that it is Allah Whose praises all beings in the heavens and on earth do celebrate, and the birds (of the air) with wings outspread? Each one knows its own (mode of) prayer and praise. And Allah knows well all that they do.2716
And Solomon was David's heir. He said "O ye people! We have been taught the speech of birds, and on us has been bestowed (a little) of all things this is indeed Grace manifest (from Allah.)"2717
And before Solomon were marshalled his hosts,- of Jinns and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and ranks.3410
We bestowed Grace aforetime on David from ourselves "O ye Mountains! Sing ye back the Praises of Allah with him! and ye birds (also)! And We made the iron soft for him;-3819
And the birds gathered (in assemblies) all with him did turn (to Allah).2724
(The bird says"I found her and her people worshipping the sun besides Allah Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing in their eyes, and has kept them away from the Path,- so they receive no guidance,-2718
At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said "O ye ants, get into your habitations, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it."638
There is not an animal (that lives) on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you. Nothing have we omitted from the Book, and they (all) shall be gathered to their Lord in the end.
