what am I?
-
I often don't know how to answer when people ask me about my faith/beliefs. I get confused looks when I say that I am a muslim as defined by God, and not by men. then I have to go into explanations about hadiths, sunni, shia, etc. I thought of saying I follow the religion of abraham, moses, jesus, muhammad. But I am not a Jew or a Christian and not a muslim either as mainstream muslims don't consider me as such. May be, I should just respond I am a believer, spiritual and not religious.
Those who follow the Koran only - how do you respond when people ask?
-
Nice question. I haven't thought it a lot because i haven't been asked much about it. Your ID is quite an answer/response, though.
somepeople > What are you?
justamuslim > Well, i'm just a muslim
somepeople > No, you're not!
justamuslim > meh So what do you think i am?
somepeople > You tell me.
justamuslim > I already did.anyway, if some people are really curious about your faith/what you believe in, then it won't hurt if you explain yourself better (or will it?)
-
A I'm a religion agnostic..
B So you're an atheist?
A Nope, i just don't believe in any religion.
B Why is that? Why don't you consider <The name of His/her sect>?
A I save you time... I convert to <The name of His/her sect> now.. if that shall makes you happy.. -

Funnily enough I used to say 'I am a JAM' = Just A Muslim ;D
You are a Muslim, you are not a sunni Muslim or a shia Muslim, you are a MUSLIM.

Depends on a few things, e.g. who you are speaking with...
for example, if you're speaking with a Traditional Muslim, you could say "just a muslim, no particular sect" or "non-denominational muslim" or "non-traditional muslim" or "non-cultural muslim" etc.
if you were speaking with a "non-Muslim" or layman, you could say "monotheist" or "muslim, but i dont follow tradition/culture".
And it also depends on if you wish to engage in discussion or make it clear to them what your view exactly is. Quite often to Traditional Muslims I will say "muslim with a small 'm'", as this usually intrigues them and they want to know more. You then explain that "muslim" is an actual Arabic word with a meaning, not a title etc, see here for example.
You could also say "if you want to know more about my views, go to Learn-About-Islam.com" etc.

As for me, when people ask, I will always tell them that I?m not islam, I follow the religion tauhid (monotheism). When they say you are not a muslim? Nope, just a follower of God. When they ask the difference between islam and tauhid, I?ll tell them islam is a religion based on traditions where as tauhid is a religion based on my relationship between me and God alone.
Hope that help. )

with all due Respect.I get the same question from sunnis, non-sunnis, muslims and non-muslims and I usually tell them I am a muslim.
Now, when sunnis hear that, they ask me which school of thought I follow, I say none. They ask me if I'm a shia, I say no. Then they start if you're not sunni, nor shia, what are you? I answer then with Hiroshima answer I'm a muslim, I don't do groups, I'm not sunni nor shia, I'm a muslim.Of course, when a non-muslim asks me the saame question, s/he gets really interested in islam and The Qur'an, Thank God. They wanna know how come I see this difference between sunnis and muslims. I have had so many conversations with non-muslims here regarding the difference between sunnis and muslims and I can assure you it works. The non-muslims are interested in Islam and The Qur'an because what I tell them, authenticates/confirms with Logic, common sense and sanity.
For example, they ask what is the difference between muslims and sunnis, I just tell them that according to The Qur'an there is no cutting off theif's hand or stoning or I tell them that hijab is not Islamic let alone compulsory, that really gets them. If you just mention that those hadiths narrated by men are lies, they see little light from The Truth that is The Qur'an, Glory be to God.
I've seen few guys here actually read The Qur'an without them asking for a copy. I just left Qur'an on the desk because I had to attend to another business and this guy took it and started reading. The only reason he stopped, is because he had to go elsewhere. But bottom line is, from what I have seen as he was reading, he liked it. He liekd what he was reading. I don't think he'd be interested in reading bigger book called "sahih hadith by Bukhary and Muslim". God knows best.
Peace be upon you.

Just say I follow Qur'an, you'll see what happens.

Tauhid
Per Quran
English (Yusuf Ali)
319 The Religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His Will) Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account. So, I do follow the religion before Allah which is Islam. There is the religion Islam as defiined by God and then the man made religion Islam.
This brings up the question who is a muslim? Abraham was a muslim per God as said in the Koran. Has anyone who follows only the Koran and been told that you are not a muslim because you don't follow bukhari's hadiths ever question this?

with all due Respect.I see it like this muslims follow Qur'an,
Sunnis think they follow Qur'an but are not and they follow tradition through those other books narrated by men.
Sunnis do know plenty form The Qur'an but from what I'm seeing here, they're brekaing The Commandmnets and inventing new ways/laws.
God knows best.Peace be upon you.

This is the answer.
You should never disown the word muslim, you are doing a great disservice to yourself if you do, if you have to explain how you dont believe in traditions, so be it.

No one has actually ever asked me this recently. (After rejecting hadith)
I think about a year ago someone asked me something about my religion etc. I can't remember if it was my religion, or about islam in general (knowing that I was muslim) I can't remember what the conversation was about and what I told them. This was back when I was Sunni.
Personally I would try to give some kind of polite answer that shows that I am not interested in discussing my faith.

couple of days ago, one of my co-workers asked me if I am muslim. I logged on to this website, printed out some hadiths and explained that this is not what I believe in. I follow only the Koran. I didn't have time to print out verses from the Koran and show her. When I get back from vacation next week, I am going to get verses from the Koran for my co-workers.
who ever started this website, much thanks!

I completely understand your problem. I get asked often what Christian denomination I am, my answer, of course, is none. But sometimes I even get told that I cannot be a Christian if I do not believe that Jesus was "our only saviour" I am then asked what religion I am. So here goes
1 I am a Christian because I believe in the message that God gave Jesus to give to us
2 I am a Jew because I accept the message that Moses received from God
3 I am a Muslim because I believe in the message that God gave Muhammad
4 I am a believer in the One God, the Creator, Father and Mother, and saviour of us all

Rev John,
I am with you! I celebrate 'christmas' too as I believe in Jesus and the message that he carried.

bravo That is the only true answer. How about saying I am a monotheist? !
