I think the point the documentary was trying tom make was that as first cousins (like siblings) are more likely to carry the same dormant genes as each-other, some of which when combined in their offspring will cause various diseases, then there is an increased chance of their child being born with an active disease or illness.

There are many hereditary diseases and not everyone will carry the same ones, some might carry none at all. It might be hard to give an exact percentage. Some diseases might occur more readily amongst certain families and nationalities than others. Geneticists might be able to break it down to some extent on a localised level and give some probability figures, but they would be better able to give individual stats if they could see both partners' genomes. Thankfully we live in an age where this can be done simply and affordably.

23andme.com, co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, the wife of Sergey Brin of Google, is a service that provides a pretty decent DNA report and amongst other things will tell you the various probabilities of whether any offspring of you and your partner might be born with various illnesses. They'll also tell you which earwax type they'll likely have. I think closely related couples would do especially well to use services like 23andme so they can consider their potential childrens' health and weigh up their options. I think I would advise it for everybody considering a child though perhaps. I know I'd like to be aware of potential problems anyway.

      Selam

I know what you are saying. I consider my cousins as my brothers and sisters as thats the way we was bought up. In the clip I posted there is a serious problem with marrying 1st cousins among the pakistani community in the UK.

I know from the Quran or at least I think I know! That marrying your 1st cousin is not forbidden in the Quran as mentioned in 423. Scientific evidence suggest it is not a wise thing to do. I tried looking up the topic here but could not find much. Could we conclude then that this practice is more cultural or is it Islamic?

      Peace

        Very interesting.

A question. In 3350 It clearly gives the prophet instructions on whom he is permitted to marry and it mentions his cousins as part of the list. But then goes on to say privilege
given only to you and not to the believers. What is exactly the privilege?

        Peace
