2:78--Religious Elite and common people أُميُّونَ--

And among them/Bani Iesraa'eel are such/quite many common people whose peculiar trait is that they do not know/have knowledge of the contents of the revealed Book except those wishful/hopeful fascinating hearsay/conjectural myths made popular and widespread in society

and as such they, the common people, keep doing/knowing nothing except conjecturing/supposing/assuming .Word by Word Analysis

ummiyoun = people from umma the pluriel ummiyoun with time became umam
ummi is one from umma
only isrelites had the book and the prophets , the ummiyoun didn't , the nations, the gentiles etc ... doesn(t mean commun people, it means those who were not israelites

Like many I also erred while translating by not taking into account the inversion of the nominal sentence where being indefinite plural noun is the subject delayed about whom information is being given. I have corrected it
