Why allah used the word adam? someting is wrong here
-
Salaam,
Back again! Dang, the topic of this thread made me unable to concentrate on my test (oh well). Anyway, I think Bro Wakas here provided the possible meanings of the root word "adam" in Arabic, so I'll let the others discuss this topic Qur'anically.
By the way, I take it from what you said previously
that you were wondering why God used the word "adam", when "adam" is the name of the first human according to the Bible?
Well, you forced me (well, not really) to open the Hebrew-version Bible and see the occurrences of the word "adam" here. I found some interesting points, which led me to conclude that the Bible did not use the word "adam" to name a person. Here are the verses where the word "adam" appears
.
And God said, "Let us make man (adam) in our image, after our likeness, and they shall rule over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the heaven and over the animals and over all the earth and over all the creeping things that creep upon the earth."
.
And God created man (ha-adam) in His image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
.
Now no tree of the field was yet on the earth, neither did any herb of the field yet grow, because the Lord God had not brought rain upon the earth, and there was no man (adam) to work the soil.
.
And the Lord God formed man (ha-adam) of dust from the ground, and He breathed into his nostrils the soul of life, and man (ha-adam) became a living soul.
.
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden from the east, and He placed there the man (ha-adam) whom He had formed.
.
Now the Lord God took the man (ha-adam), and He placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to guard it.
.
And the Lord God commanded man (ha-adam), saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat
.
And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man (ha-adam) is alone; I shall make him a helpmate opposite him."
.
And the Lord God formed from the earth every beast of the field and every fowl of the heavens, and He brought to man (ha-adam) to see what he would call it, and whatever the man (ha-adam) called each living thing, that was its name
.
And man (adam) named all the cattle and the fowl of the heavens and all the beasts of the field, but for man* (ha-adam), he did not find a helpmate opposite him .
.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon man (ha-adam), and he slept, and He took one of his sides, and He closed the flesh in its place
.
And the Lord God built the side that He had taken from man (ha-adam) into a woman, and He brought her to man (ha-adam)
.
And man(ha-adam) said, "This time, it is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. This one shall be called woman (ishah) because this one was taken from man (ish) ."
.
Now they were both naked, the man (ha-adam) and his wife, but they were not ashamed
.
And they heard the voice of the Lord God going in the garden to the direction of the sun, and the man (ha-adam) and his wife hid from before the Lord God in the midst of the trees of the garden
.
And the Lord God called to man (ha-adam), and He said to him, "Where are you?"
.
And the man (ha-adam) said, "The woman whom You gave with me she gave me of the tree; so I ate."
.
And to man* He said, "Because you listened to your wife, and you ate from the tree from which I commanded you saying, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed be the ground for your sake; with toil shall you eat of it all the days of your life.
.
And the man (ha-adam) named his wife Eve (Khavah), because she was the mother of all life
.
And the Lord God made for Adam* and for his wife shirts of skin, and He dressed them
.
Now the Lord God said, "Behold man (ha-adam) has become like one of us, having the ability of knowing good and evil, and now, lest he stretch forth his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat and live forever."
.
And He drove the man (ha-adam) out, and He stationed from the east of the Garden of Eden the cherubim and the blade of the revolving sword, to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
.
Now the man (ha-adam) knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, "I have acquired a man with the Lord." .
.
And Adam (adam) knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and she named him Seth, for God has given me other seed, instead of Abel, for Cain slew him
.
This is the narrative of the generations of man (adam); on the day that God created man (adam), in the likeness of God He created him
.
Male and female He created them, and He blessed them, and He named them man (adam) on the day they were created.
.
And Adam (adam) lived one hundred and thirty years, and he begot in his likeness after his image, and he named him Seth
.
And the days of Adam (adam) after he begot Seth were eight hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.
.
And it came to pass when man (ha-adam) commenced to multiply upon the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them.
.
That the sons of the nobles saw the daughters of man (ha-adam) when they were beautifying themselves, and they took for themselves wives from whomever they chose.
.
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of the nobles would come to the daughters of man (ha-adam), and they would bear for them; they are the mighty men, who were of old, the men of renown
.
And the Lord saw that the evil of man (ha-adam) was great in the earth, and every imagination of his heart was only evil all the time.
.
And the Lord regretted that He had made man (ha-adam) upon the earth, and He became grieved in His heart.
.
And the Lord said, "I will blot out man (ha-adam), whom I created, from upon the face of the earth, from man to cattle to creeping thing, to the fowl of the heavens, for I regret that I made them."
.
And all flesh perished that moved upon the earth, among the fowl, and among the cattle, and among the beasts, and among all creeping creatures that creep upon the earth and all mankind (ha-adam).
Anywaaayyy.... you would so totally snooze through all that! But yeah, I don't think I can paste anymore -___-;;;;
My observation from the Bible is that the word "adam" is translated as either Adam and mankind. What interests me is the use of the definite particle "hey", which makes it "ha-adam" or "THE adam" (if I can propose the Arabic equivalent, that will be Al-adam). Anyway... which brings me to wonder if the Bible ever refers "adam" as a name of a person. The way I see it right now, "adam" means mankind, whereas "ha-adam" can refer to a specific person (with no name mentioned).
Then I noted Genesis 51-2,
This is the narrative of the generations of man (adam); on the day that God created man (adam), in the likeness of God He created him. Male and female He created them, and He blessed them, and He named them man (adam) on the day they were created.
Interesting how God created "adam" in both genders. So in my humble opinion, in the Bible, "adam" is not a name of a person, as it is understood my many people. Yet, I wonder why so many equates "adam" as a name of a person. Can it be, the interpretation/tafsir of Biblical scholars, that in certain verses the word "adam" means a person with the name Adam, and not mankind?
I don't know if it provides significance/help to you; but anyway, God did not use the word "adam" to confuse us, as it does not mean a name of a person to begin with, even in the Bible. I'll settle with "adam" being mankind. May not be the best understanding but in the future, I'll look deeper into it (need to analyse the verb that followed "adam" too, but no time atm).
Anyway, as a disclaimer, I have extremely limited knowledge of the Bible and the Hebrew language, so don't take my words for it. If anyone here is well-versed in the Bible and understands Hebrew, feel free to challenge/correct my mistakes .
Salaam
Excuse me that I have not read the whole thread but this makes a lot of sense regarding the continual reference to 'son of man' throughout the Bible. Well done Born Again.
Regarding the male and female made from one 'Adam', mankind is also a word that seems to be about men but includes woman also.
-
peace all,
BornAgain, nice work. I am not surprised that former revelations contain some truth, and I am confident if they are researched in the same way we are studying The Quran here, then more truths will be found.
Mazhar, you are right, "adam" can be a specific person, but he is used as representative of mankind. This is blatantly obvious in some contexts, e.g. 711.
Sorry brother Wakas, it is not "representative of mankind", since one can be a representative only at a point in time when those do eixist simultaneously whom he is representing. It is not the case, therefore, living humanity is addressed as Bani Adam. Please note in 711 presence of particle "Summa" that indicates that two initial steps of creation of him didn't need mention/reiteration-are supressed having been mentioned about us, i.e. creation and preening.
-
Therefore , it is true the theory of Adam as the first prophet !!! What didn't make sense is all christians say prophet to whom? well, homosapiens, he was not alone, it was many people in this time but because he was the first prophet that he is called our father, like abraham
does this make sense? for i am about to turn into an atheist LOL just kidding ............for now -
peace loxbox..i understand how hard it is when u have so many questions and so many things that dont make sense..im going through the same thing..but dont let any confusion in religion stand in ur way of believing in God. the way to get to Him may be confusing and exhausting fr now but inshallah with perseverence and prayer we will all be guided towards the truth.patience is very hard..but very essential

You are incorrect. For example, let's say one person starts a movement, he is representative of that movement, and when people in future refer to that movement, they refer to the initial exemplar, the prototype if you will. That is not to say others were not present at the time, they may have been, and God chose one called "adam" to tell us the story.
Please reference your evidence for article "summa". Thanks.

Peace Wakas,
Not to accept a straight forward and simple fact with regard to meanings of word Adam by aforesaid argument has no substance. Adam is Father and people are called Bani Adam, progeny of Adam, and a father is not the representative of progeny who has not even yet born.
Any thing mentioned before "Summa" cannot be the afterwards matter of what is stated after "Summa". Summa is always reflective of time sequence, it can be seen in any dictionary. At all 25 occurrences, word Adam is used as Proper Noun and proper nouns do not correspond to general terms like "representative of humanity".

Mazhar, I am trying to understand something. I hope that you may be able to help.
How do we know when a word is used as a proper noun in Arabic?
In South Africa we have many people who have the name Patience. Please look at the following sentence.
Patience is virtuous.
In English how am I to tell whether or not "Patience" is a proper noun unless I take the context into account?
Is it the same in Arabic? If it is, have you taken the context into account to determine that Adam is a proper noun in every occurrence? Have you considered that the context could point to Adam not being a proper noun?
I look forward to having this clarified.

How do we know when a word is used as a proper noun in Arabic?
I have mentioned all the Aayaat where the word Adam has occurred in the Grand Qur'aan and pasted the context also where it is used as Name alongwith other names. The vowel on the last consonant of a noun indicates the role of that noun in the sentence. The context nowhere suggests that Adam is anything except proper noun, name of a person. And in 235 immediately after addressing him by name, the pronoun "anta" second person, masculine, singular is used and again with "zauj" personal pronoun "ka" is there for second person, masculine, singular.

Thanks for your reply Mazhar. I will consider this.

Are you implying WE were created and preened THEN malaika SJD to adam? Yes or No?

If the whole sentence is viewed, there you will find no contradiction.

Adam, as a human being is distinct, as for mode and manner of creation is concerned, from majority of other men and women.

what is 'artfully treated water' ???
we are not made of diluted clay!

I had completely forgotten to correct/modify the translation which I had initially attempted when I could not find suitable words to describe . Thereafter I had studied about "Sperm" as described by Qur'aan under the caption "The Sperm-its origin and resting/maturing place and journey in male's body to see him off".
The description of "water-"" is , Passive participle; singular; masculine. The basic perception infolded in its Root is to use for service and work; to rub/pulverize; the clothes worn in service. Use of clothes also makes them rubbed and smooth textured lacking energy and vitality. But when we apply this process on something like water to take some service or work from it we cannot attribute negativity or contemptibility to the end product.
Medical science do not yet use different word/term for the "sperms" when these are in the testis and when these are transported to epididymis for storage where they in fact become "Nutfa-Sperm" as described by Qur'aan. Qur'aan calls the initial stage as extract/ of which afterwards becomes "Nutfa"-2313, in/within firm/strengthening/ stationing place .
I now think that "extract of delicately treated water"- might describe the three words. This "extract" gets desiccated in the epididymis which absorbs about 90 percent of the fluid produced by testis.
I would like that you pay some attention and suggest some good English words which could describe the term of .

Nutfa in 23.13 is not in the man, are you saying it is? The place of rest is in the woman, firmly fixed, next verse it becomes a blood clot then gets bones, all this is inside the woman not the man.
The Seminal vesticles are sac like structures located close to the prostate gland. They secrete a thick fluid that mixes with seminal fluid produced by the prostate and sperm from the testes to form semen (ejaculate).
The Quran does not detail this as it details the formation of a human being inside the woman. 23.14 is the creation of a human being inside the woman.

this is about the creating man from clay right? Please clarify what verse I am supposed to be looking at.

Nutfa is not made inside the body of woman/wife. Nutfa is made in the body of man and then is pushed into the fluid secreted from prostrate and other ducts and then is transferred/seen off into the "recepticle" for entrusting it to one's wife.

If 'Suffixed Pronoun, third person, singular, masculine' him refers back to the man/human created from clay then it is saying he was then made into sperm.
The way I see those 2 verses is that Allah created the first human from clay and after that - as in very other human being after - Allah made part (sperm) of that human creating machinery (man) create another human creation (baby) in another human creating machinery(woman) The male and female human creating machinery (man and woman) are both needed, they are each half of the whole 'creation' and cannot 'create humans' alone. The fluid (sperm) from the male human creating machine (man) lasts maximum 6 weeks 'alive' in the male human creating machine (man), it has to be 'fluidly transferred to the female human creating machine (woman) in that time, the fresher the better. There the new human creation (baby) will be formed in the process described. During this is is 'fixed' in a 'suspended' position (alaqah) while it grows and forms a complete, but very small, new human creation that will become an adult human creating machine. (man or woman)
"In male humans, sperm cells consists of a head 5 ?m by 3 ?m and a tail 41 ?m long. The tail flagellates, which propels the sperm cell (at about 1?3 mm/minute in humans) by whipping in an elliptical cone. Semen has an alkaline nature, and they do not reach full motility (hypermotility) until they reach the vagina where the alkaline pH is neutralized by acidic vaginal fluids. This gradual process takes 20?30 minutes. In this time, fibrinogen from the seminal vesicles forms a clot, securing and protecting the sperm. Just as they become hypermotile, fibrinolysin from the prostate dissolves the clot, allowing the sperm to progress optimally."

Then the race begins!
The work and time it takes for the little fallas to fight their way in there, fight their way in to fertilize the egg then can take a few more days traveling to get to its resting place in the firm fixed position on the wall of the uterus where it becomes an embryo.
