Friendships with non Muslims
-
Salam to all.
I was told the other day that I should not be friends with non muslims. This I thought was a ridiculous statement to make as that would render me tantamount to a hermit. Short of trawling the local Mosque (houses made to look like Mosques) of which are only two, I would have a problem. When asked why? I was quoted 3.28. I argued that this was impossible for me as I would have no one to talk to. My situation is this; I have a neighbour called Helen. You will probably hear me mention Helen quite alot on here, as she is my only physical source of human contact. Strange I know but never the less true! My only sister lives in LA, and my other non muslim friend lives in Oxford. The other three friends are Muslims, and are not happy with me right now. I tried to justify my friendship with Helen by telling the muslim that she was very helpful for me and that it was nice to have someone come round for coffee and a chat. I also pointed out that she never puts me down for my religion, if anything she is very gracious about my way of life. Helen does not have any religion and is in a state of confusion about the whole thing. I also pointed out that I did not believe that Allah swt would want me to be all alone. This had no affect and the rant continued. So my question is.......What is wrong with being friends with non- believers?Salam

theres nothing wrong with it, you can be friend with them, work with them and all, as long as they dont push you to make something haram.
you can quote them 4913

I agree with Badr. I see term awleya as something different to a friend. I see it more as an associate. Such as an associate in war or anything where the 2 people have to believe in the same cause.
I mean think about this verse
O you who believe, do not take you fathers nor brothers as allies if they prefer rejection to belief. And whoever of you takes them as such, then these are the wicked (923)
Does this mean that you should never talk to your family again if they're not muslim? Of course not. If you read the next few verses you will find that it refers to a war not a cup of coffee -

understand Let not believers take disbelievers as decision takers in their place.
I assume that doesn't stand if I am in a road accident and a Christian surgeon needs to make a decision to operate to save my life? Would he need to waste valuable time finding a muslim to make that decision while I was unconscious? ;D

Salam.
If you look at 4.76, 7.27 and 10.62 Awliyaa means friends. 7.27 in particular talks about the Devils being made friends of the disblievers and not to be tempted by the Devils and there friends. So to be friends with a disbeliever is not impossible but the message seems to be that we must fall on the line of caution when dealing with them, and not to take them into our confidence. So keep it light hearted. Yes?Peace and respect
