be careful with assumptions, especially when you have no clear idea of the fine details of the situation. and don't forget that the other party can also say "The more I/we see example of the morals of you, ..."

      exactly

          Salam,
I guess we should encourage it..
In the course of friendship, we could invite person to know about Islam..
Further, only friends who trusts us will be able to accept what we are saying.
I believe it should be encouraged.

And if we consider the way Muslims are behaving nowadays, what's the point in keeping friendship with them. Especially, in my country we may find so many Traditionalists, non rational people who believe in so many superstitions and upholding Hadiths..etc etc

            Salam to all.
Thank you for all your input, it really did help. I now believe from reading the verses of the Quran on this topic especially chapter 60, that there is nothing wrong with being friends with anyone as long as they have not incurred Allah's swt anger or tried to hurt you or lead you astray. If like my friend Helen they are tolerant of your lifestyle do not put you down for it, help you and are kind and respectful to you then I see nothing wrong with it.

            Respect and Peace

              Salaam.

Exactly, one day, Allah SWT might guide them to The Straight Way to pray with you, to fast with you, to read and follow Qur'an with you, God willing. You never know. God Knows BEST.

              Peace.

                    Salam all.

I personally don't think there is any problem with having friends of different faiths. I am sure god in his infinite wisdom would have known that Muslims would live in areas where they would have to work with and live side by side with those of other faiths. It would be difficult not to make friends in these circumstances unless you were some kind of extremist.

From a personal note I am also in a situation where the majority of my friends are from non Muslim backgrounds. And to be honest I prefer it. I think it helps me be who I really am and be able to exercise my religious views more freely. I do have friends from traditional Muslim backgrounds but I am never at ease fully and can not express quran alone views to them. I have to a few and they just seem gob smacked at the ideas. One of them just criticizes my ideas and said she would pray I go back to proper Islam D So I have chosen not to bother anymore.

This is one of those instances where it becomes very clear that the text should be approached with some common sense. Looking for the spirit and not the letter (not that I'm saying the letter of the law in this case demands no friendship with non-muslims). It's inconceivable that the same text that promotes multi-culturalism as a blessing, and endorses overall tolerance and lack of compulsion toward others, would in the same breath say that we could not take as friends people who believe differently from us.

The Creator is merciful and wants what is best for us. Have to always remember that while reading the text.

I agree. I am possessed by the devil according to my so-called Muslim Brothers and Sisters, and yes they too say I will pray for you to come back to the deen. My non muslim friends think that the way I am being treated is horrible. No wonder people think Islam seems to stay in the dark ages.

Have you talked to them about it?
Ask them, if you want, how do they recognise the devil in you?
I don't think you're possessed by the devil nor jinn and I'm a muslim.

Thank you Alen. I have asked, and the answer is that I am not following the Sunnah of our Prophet Mohammad by following Quran alone and not hadiths. So go figure? It amazes me that they just don't get it?! You would think Wow following the Quran what a wonderful thing to do, yet they question that? How absurd not to mention mind bogglingly strange.

                              Don't worry.
Here's something prophet/messenger Muhammad will say in the future

2530 And the messenger said My Lord, my people have deserted this Qur'an.

                              Don't worry.

                                Salaamun all,

Please allow me to add few aayaats, inshaAllah.

                                3118

                                3119
                                3120

3118 O you who believe do not take as an inner-circle any from besides yourselves; they will only disrupt you greatly. They wish that you deviate; the hatred is apparent out of their mouths and what their chests conceal is even greater! We have made clear for you the signs if you comprehend.

3119 Here you love them while they do not love you, and you believe in the entire Book. And if they meet you they say We believe, and if they are alone they bite their fingers out of frustration at you. Say Die in your frustration, Allah is aware of what is in the chests.

3120 If any good befalls you it disturbs them, and if any bad befalls you they rejoice with it. And if you are patient and righteous their planning will not harm you at all. Allah is Encompassing all they do.

                                Sadaqa-Allah

May Allah guide us all towards the Truth.

39.45 When Allah, the One and Only, is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are filled with disgust and horror; but when (gods) other than He are mentioned, behold, they are filled with joy!

On the topic of friends with non muslims, one particular friend of mine was my rock through hard times and was the one that praised my decision to convert. She was the only one of friends and family that actually read the Quran for ME to see what it was about. She was a born again Christian for many years and knew the bible well. It took a while and no pushing from me but she is now a muslimah, alhamdulillah and so are 2 or 3 of her grown kids. Alhamdulillah.

If I had not kept the friend that had helped me so much asking nothing in return, what kind of Muslim would that make me?

                                          Mohammed M. Khan

                                          Beautiful.
I must remember this and be aware of it, God willing.
Thank God I have you as my friend, brother.
