Can muslim actors do kissing scenes?
-
However ? if you happen to be a Muslim actor, and the movie or play script demands a kissing scene, I don't really see any problem with it from a moral point of view. Pretending to kiss someone you might not even particularly like or find attractive with dozens of people around you and flashlights beaming at you will hardly cause you to have any sort of romantic feeling, it's just part of the job.
If you were married, would you do it? I mean would you think it would be a problem from a moral point of view for you to have that kind of physical interaction with another man?
-
No, I wouldn't see any problem with that from a moral point of view. But then I also wouldn't stop hugging my male friends if I got married or had a partner. Not every physical interaction between two people of the opposite gender is sexual!
handshake
I just had a conversation about this issue with a friend who really wants to pursue his acting carreer, but, among other considerations, one of the problems is the fact that his wife is very much against it ? because of kissing scenes etc., but also because she considers the whole acting scene to be not compatible with Islamic values. -

I take it that was a yes? You would do kissing scenes if you had a partner if the role required you to. Would you do sex scenes?
And you don't consider exchanging bodily fluids with a man sexual (even if it is saliva)?! Hugging, handshaking is different to kissing I would say. I hug and handshake my female friends, but also my male friends, but I would consider it unacceptable to kiss my bearded friend in the mouth, either in a social or professional backdrop! Why would it then be acceptable to kiss a woman in a professional situation?
handshake
Well I guess it depends on how liberal you are.
Personally if I was an actor, I would purposely mess up my kissing scenes, so I get extra retakes, extra smooching time ignore

I agree, it is disgusting, and I have yet to see a scene when actual muth kissing makes a plot more believable than without. Usually it is unnecessary and therefore, distracting. It has become something of a stamp you must put in, just as you put a title or credits. I think it is done to brainwash society, in spite of all the hygienic considerations. It reminds little of all the scenes in older films where people were shown smoking. Smoking was seen as manly or as sexy in a woman.
Kissing on the other hand lacks ny power of suggestion, it is just film time put in for nothing if it is not, as I say, to brainwash that kissing is a must and universal no matter what.Salaam

Ok, this rather trifling topic has been bugging me for a while...
Using the Quran as basis, how would you go forth in arguing for/against mslim acotrs doing kissing scenes? Plase keep in mind that the act itself is part of a scene where both parts are acting with an entire crew filming, so there is probably zero lust involved.Peace O0
IMO yes.
You cannot argue against a kissing scene via the Quran. I'm Iranian and i've seen iranian films get restricted (so no hugging between men and women let alone kissing) I along with some other iranians i know think it could have been better if there was no such restriction.
Depending on the nature of the kissing the only problem i see is awkwardness. Also if I was married i would think it still ok SO LONG AS my wife has no problems with it. Even if I was for exmaple in a scene in which i am supposed to shake a woman's hand and i had a wife who was against this....I would not. This isn't to say that if i had a wife who gave me permission to have a sex scene i'd not do it becasue that's when the Quran (I THINK) restricts such things.

Yes.
Would you do sex scenes?
Probably not. But less out of moral considerations but simply because I don't like being naked in front of people I'm not in an intimate relationship with.
And you don't consider exchanging bodily fluids with a man sexual (even if it is saliva)?!
But how many fluids are being exchanged in a fake kiss?

Me neither, but maybe that is a cultural / historical thing? In early Christianity, the so-called kiss of peace ? which is a kiss on the mouth ? was common practice.

Why is it not immoral to have sex with someone that isn't your spouse?

Saliva. Which fluids would you exchange with me if we met up as friends? We could fake kiss, and exchange saliva if you like? -*
Me neither, but maybe that is a cultural / historical thing?
Yes, it is. We are social creatures and thus have social norms. Kissing someone in the mouth and tasting each others spit is considered a sexual/intimate act in pretty much every society.
Do you think there is a concept of sexual morality in islam? If yes, what does it consist of, according to you?
As far as I can tell, a fake kiss is still sexual. On-screen you are portraying an intimate/sexual moment with this act, irrelevant of how you and the other actor really feel about it.
Why stop at kissing? Theoretically, a muslim could become a porn star if there are no 'moral' considerations.

This thread is hilarious. I'm sorry to say. But yeah, I don't know if we should be concerned with the scenario. But anyway...
As far as kissing goes, my understanding is that the Qur'aan is silent about it. It does not prohibit, and nor does it encourage it. We, as human beings, can tell our intentions when we kiss. Is it sexual or not? A 'lil peck on the lip may be totally free of any sexuality, and I see no problem with it. Whereas anything that involves more action (you know what I mean) is usually sexual and can lead to zina. Though limited contact is most ideal for non-married people.
To relate back to the topic of the thread. I agree and disagree with some comments made. In most cases, kissing scenes do not add value to the story, but there are cases when they do. A goodbye non-sexual kiss adds to the bittersweet atmosphere of farewell. Or a hug and a kiss when a couple is reunited after years of separation makes the moment more intense. The key is not to overdo it... It gets tedious when you spend about 5 minutes watching the battle of the tongues. Really.
That being said, the original poster said something about not feeling the kiss that they act out. But one thing to consider by acting it out, do they portray sexual kiss and anything else that may entail? It may potentially promote sexual kissing to the audience. Really, it's all due to popular culture that people think sexual kisses are all rainbow and sunshine and butterflies and sugar cane and fairy floss and dinosaurs. We have been brainwashed that the most important ingredient in a (non-married) relationship is physical-sexual contact, which is not true IMHO. So yeah... it also is about what message that you are conveying, and not strictly about what you personally feel.

But as they say there are no such thing as stupid questions only stupid answers..
The Quran does not even touch this subject, perhaps due to simple reason that 'theatrical art' and 'movie' were not invented yet at it's time and within the society that the Quran was 'initially released and published'.In an effort to gives an answer of the question "Can muslim actors do kissing scenes?"
Is of course put the question back to the so-called 'muslim actors', Dear Mr. "Muslim Actors (or actresses)" can you do kissing scenes?
And both the answer of Yes or No is a valid answer...But if I were the so-called 'muslim actors', I would say yes.. as I can do kissing very well. Yet if again I'm the 'muslim actor' and the question were 'can you do parachuting scene?' I would say no... as I have a 'vertigo' or more correctly termed 'acrophobia', I'm totally afraid of heights.
Again, it intrigued me though Mr. Awesome, why this topic are 'bugging you'?
Are you an actor?
Can you kiss very well? (LOL)Salam / Peace

I would not do it nor would recommend it.
I believe 1732 to mean not going anywhere near it.
I think any rational person would know that kissing does incite lust and is an excessive step passed looking or even hand-shaking.If it says Dont Go Near Adultery/Fornication, That to me means just that. I dont even want to be left in a room alone with another woman, nor in a filled room kissing and touching her.
The Only exception I would take is if the other actress is MY WIFE...then I think it would be ok, (however it shouldnt be excessive kissing.

Thanks for all the answers. The reason I'm asking this is because I'm an actor(still an amateur at this stage, though).
I'm going to avoid scripts with kissing scenes for as long as possible, though I know that I will have to face this dilemma as soon as I land a lead.to RA786 1732 seems to mention adultery, which is not related to the topic at hand, especially since I'm not married.
Sahih International
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
Muhsin Khan
And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah , and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him).

And come not near unto adultery. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way.

Nor come nigh to adultery for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils). -
Hello Captain Awesome, long time no hear.
There seems to be a lot of modesty and morality debates going on at the moment her on f-m....
Before you decide to stay away from kissing, let me ask you something.
Have you ever asked yourself why a sexual act (and I am generalizing grossly now, from holding hands to getting jiggy) under certain circumstances is not allowed by Allah? He has given us the sensations such as falling in love, getting warm and tingly inside from a kiss, loving someone so much that you just can't keep yourself from hugging her (or him)?
Why does Allah give all these wonderful things to us and then forbids us to use them?
-
Peeing and shitting has also been given us by Allah, but somehow we seem to get through without portraying peeing and shitting in films ad nauseam. Does it result in lacking realism? No. Actually anybody can fill in the blanks and have a very good idea of things ging on without everything being explicited. Also, if we go that far, should people be actually killed in films when murders or deaths or battles are depicted in the films? Those scenes are done and nobody needs to die or anything like it. We rely on imagination and we rely in good effects. (that said a lot of gore scenes are also unnecessary, for sure, even more than kissing scenes). Even in theater, it never happens that in performances of say Wilhelm Tell real arrows are shot to the apple on top of Tell's child head.
What we are getting nowadays is bullshit disguised as acting or artistic needs. Has kissing been ever necessary in anciente greek theater pieces? Why or what for do we need to see actual tongue kissing in order to understand or imagine any feelings or emotions or passions in a film. Are we idiots? Probably we are trying very hard to become idiots.

But acting in a kissing scene is not real kissing, and usually the actors feel awkward more than anything else. I seriously doubt that doing a kissing scene is inciting lust in any of the people participating.

Interesting subject, one that I've been thinking about quite a bit as well... Honestly, I don't see why not; the question is, will they do kissing scenes? I think the issue with that lies not only in the ignorance of filmmakers about Muslims/Middle Easterners (whom they all lump in the same category), but with the ignorance of Muslims themselves that impose hadithist laws unto themselves due to none other than tradition.
I'm a bit too flustered and inexperienced in Islam to give a statement based on a religious POV, but I see this as a very cultural issue as well. So far, the only market for Arab/Persian/actors of "Muslim" heritage in the West are those of a terrorist or a refugee or taxi driver, etc. It'd be nice to see some variation on that, but due to the restrictions that Muslims seem to place upon themselves about super-modesty/rejection of photography, they also make it difficult for the west to see them as anything but.
I don't want to inflame any arguments any more, but kissing/love scenes do add depth to some stories you can't have every film on the market finding subdued, no-contact ways for characters to fall in love (although, today, those movies are so rare that they're quite lovely!) It would become rapidly exhausting.
I have here a semi-relevant video interview with the Sudanese-Arab/English actor Alexander Siddig (points to her avatar) during the Doha film festival, in which the interviewer asks him "What is the future of Arab films?" (time index 221) He gives a very down to earth, honest answer that I agree with. (Let me remind you that in the entertainment world, Arab almost exclusively means "Muslim" in subcontext.)

Catch my drift?
Having Sexual Intercourse with a woman who is not your wife is considered Adultery. Some would argue that just having Oral Sex/Master baiting Someone else is then not prohibited because Its not "Sexual Intercourse" Technically. I would say I consider them ALL (including Kissing) to be wrong behavior (maybe not Adultery Technically) but at least wrong behavior that would lead to adultery or have adultery roots.
But acting in a kissing scene is not real kissing, and usually the actors feel awkward more than anything else. I seriously doubt that doing a kissing scene is inciting lust in any of the people participating.
Leyna perhaps we are not talking about the same type of kissing and same type of movies... let me Clarify
In my country (USA) most Films that have Scenes where Actors Kiss consist of a Male putting his Real Tongue inside the mouth of the Woman actress and Moves it around. This is Considered Real Kissing Not "Fake Kissing". Now, I can say at least for myself (who had been in plays and acting before) when you Literally Kiss the other person (tongue or no tongue) you are in a lustful state (at least me anyways).
So this leads me to believe you are talking about a different type of kissing... meaning the two people go in for the kiss but stop right before they touch?
therefore their lips and tongue never touch? please clarify what you are talking about in regard to fake kissing? -
You cannot argue against a kissing scene via the Quran.
And therefore there is nothing wrong with it - it's not forbidden.
Peace
