Ok, this rather trifling topic has been bugging me for a while...
Using the Quran as basis, how would you go forth in arguing for/against mslim acotrs doing kissing scenes? Plase keep in mind that the act itself is part of a scene where both parts are acting with an entire crew filming, so there is probably zero lust involved.

Are those scenes necessary? I have come to the conclusion that those scenes are just a duty in films and tv today, they add nothing to the plot, they add nothing to the intrinsic value of the film, including the entertainment value. I think those scenes are more of a payemtn of dues act than enaything else, or else some kind of brainwashing in the sense that kissing is as much a duty of life as military service for young men used to be in most country, something unavoidable. Becuase other than that it is inmensely boring and silly. So they kiss, so what? Some campiagn to distribute virus and microbes evenly on earth's population? To desribute stupidity evenly on earth's population? They might succeed if it was less boring. As it is, its greatest usefulness is a sleep inducer. Suppose that you are watching for the sake of the plot or the action. The kissing arrives and you set off to something else and realise that in fact you are tired. Switch off, and let them kiss at leisure. It has reached a point where it is ridiculous.

      Salaam

just because lust isnt there doesn't mean it's right.

syrian tv gets turksih dubbed tv series they cut out the kissing, the shows are still successful. (OMG a successful show and they cut out all the intimate scenes!)

those scenes are not necessary. why should one bend backwards against their morals for entertainment?

pornography happens even with a whole "crew" filming.. oh but wait maybe lust is involved! what if it becomes involved after? what if the one that watches becomes lustful after seeing the scene? whats the aim in promoting the kissing?

dont go close to zina 1732

God never commands of things that are shameful 728.

in my opinion, some things should just be left private

It's funny because "public displays of affection" are something that we all pretty much do not want yet in films it seems to be all the rage. I agree with huruf, it doesn't really add any value, you might as well film someone bending down to tie their shoelace or something. Unless you're recording a fairytale, how else are you going to emphasise the "and then they lived happily ever after" bit? p

Err on the side of caution here anyways.

hold hands, smile, gaze in each others eyes.. come on there is heaps of ways be creative you don't need it. who said public affection was good anyway

i still believe some things should be left private whether on the scene or in peoples affairs

I agree with Sarah. Iranian film makers portray love and intimacy in very creative ways without resorting to explicit smooching. In a society where they are severely restricted by the theocratic regime they manage to incorporate symbolism, metaphorical devices and excellent cinematography to get the message across. Also, having everything on a plate is boring. I don't need to see a couple kissing to understand they are having a physical relationship in a film. There are endless ways this can be shown.

One of the most memorable scenes I've seen is in No Country for Old Men. At the end, the assassin is in the room with his victim. The scene cuts to the outside of the house with him coming out and casually checking the underside of his boots. As a viewer, you immediately understand that he's killed his victim and he's just checking to make sure there's no blood on his boots. You still feel the sadness, despair, anger etc. despite not seeing the murder happen. That's what you call great film making!

                Salam

I also find kissing scenes rather boring and unnecessary. I find it much more interesting to present erotic tension or love between two people in more subtle ways. I think I've only ever seen one love / sex scene in a movie I liked, and that is the one in the Matrix.

However ? if you happen to be a Muslim actor, and the movie or play script demands a kissing scene, I don't really see any problem with it from a moral point of view. Pretending to kiss someone you might not even particularly like or find attractive with dozens of people around you and flashlights beaming at you will hardly cause you to have any sort of romantic feeling, it's just part of the job.

If you were married, would you do it? I mean would you think it would be a problem from a moral point of view for you to have that kind of physical interaction with another man?

No, I wouldn't see any problem with that from a moral point of view. But then I also wouldn't stop hugging my male friends if I got married or had a partner. Not every physical interaction between two people of the opposite gender is sexual!

I just had a conversation about this issue with a friend who really wants to pursue his acting carreer, but, among other considerations, one of the problems is the fact that his wife is very much against it ? because of kissing scenes etc., but also because she considers the whole acting scene to be not compatible with Islamic values.

Well I guess it depends on how liberal you are.

Personally if I was an actor, I would purposely mess up my kissing scenes, so I get extra retakes, extra smooching time ignore

I take it that was a yes? You would do kissing scenes if you had a partner if the role required you to. Would you do sex scenes?

And you don't consider exchanging bodily fluids with a man sexual (even if it is saliva)?! Hugging, handshaking is different to kissing I would say. I hug and handshake my female friends, but also my male friends, but I would consider it unacceptable to kiss my bearded friend in the mouth, either in a social or professional backdrop! Why would it then be acceptable to kiss a woman in a professional situation?

I agree, it is disgusting, and I have yet to see a scene when actual muth kissing makes a plot more believable than without. Usually it is unnecessary and therefore, distracting. It has become something of a stamp you must put in, just as you put a title or credits. I think it is done to brainwash society, in spite of all the hygienic considerations. It reminds little of all the scenes in older films where people were shown smoking. Smoking was seen as manly or as sexy in a woman.
Kissing on the other hand lacks ny power of suggestion, it is just film time put in for nothing if it is not, as I say, to brainwash that kissing is a must and universal no matter what.

                              IMO yes.

You cannot argue against a kissing scene via the Quran. I'm Iranian and i've seen iranian films get restricted (so no hugging between men and women let alone kissing) I along with some other iranians i know think it could have been better if there was no such restriction.

Depending on the nature of the kissing the only problem i see is awkwardness. Also if I was married i would think it still ok SO LONG AS my wife has no problems with it. Even if I was for exmaple in a scene in which i am supposed to shake a woman's hand and i had a wife who was against this....I would not. This isn't to say that if i had a wife who gave me permission to have a sex scene i'd not do it becasue that's when the Quran (I THINK) restricts such things.

                              Peace

Probably not. But less out of moral considerations but simply because I don't like being naked in front of people I'm not in an intimate relationship with.

Me neither, but maybe that is a cultural / historical thing? In early Christianity, the so-called kiss of peace ? which is a kiss on the mouth ? was common practice.

Why is it not immoral to have sex with someone that isn't your spouse?

Saliva. Which fluids would you exchange with me if we met up as friends? We could fake kiss, and exchange saliva if you like? -*

Yes, it is. We are social creatures and thus have social norms. Kissing someone in the mouth and tasting each others spit is considered a sexual/intimate act in pretty much every society.

Do you think there is a concept of sexual morality in islam? If yes, what does it consist of, according to you?

As far as I can tell, a fake kiss is still sexual. On-screen you are portraying an intimate/sexual moment with this act, irrelevant of how you and the other actor really feel about it.

Why stop at kissing? Theoretically, a muslim could become a porn star if there are no 'moral' considerations.

This thread is hilarious. I'm sorry to say. But yeah, I don't know if we should be concerned with the scenario. But anyway...

As far as kissing goes, my understanding is that the Qur'aan is silent about it. It does not prohibit, and nor does it encourage it. We, as human beings, can tell our intentions when we kiss. Is it sexual or not? A 'lil peck on the lip may be totally free of any sexuality, and I see no problem with it. Whereas anything that involves more action (you know what I mean) is usually sexual and can lead to zina. Though limited contact is most ideal for non-married people.

To relate back to the topic of the thread. I agree and disagree with some comments made. In most cases, kissing scenes do not add value to the story, but there are cases when they do. A goodbye non-sexual kiss adds to the bittersweet atmosphere of farewell. Or a hug and a kiss when a couple is reunited after years of separation makes the moment more intense. The key is not to overdo it... It gets tedious when you spend about 5 minutes watching the battle of the tongues. Really.

That being said, the original poster said something about not feeling the kiss that they act out. But one thing to consider by acting it out, do they portray sexual kiss and anything else that may entail? It may potentially promote sexual kissing to the audience. Really, it's all due to popular culture that people think sexual kisses are all rainbow and sunshine and butterflies and sugar cane and fairy floss and dinosaurs. We have been brainwashed that the most important ingredient in a (non-married) relationship is physical-sexual contact, which is not true IMHO. So yeah... it also is about what message that you are conveying, and not strictly about what you personally feel.

dinosaurs?! haha... tat was funny rotfl

This thread and the question is indeed funny..
But as they say there are no such thing as stupid questions only stupid answers..
The Quran does not even touch this subject, perhaps due to simple reason that 'theatrical art' and 'movie' were not invented yet at it's time and within the society that the Quran was 'initially released and published'.

In an effort to gives an answer of the question "Can muslim actors do kissing scenes?"
Is of course put the question back to the so-called 'muslim actors', Dear Mr. "Muslim Actors (or actresses)" can you do kissing scenes?
And both the answer of Yes or No is a valid answer...

But if I were the so-called 'muslim actors', I would say yes.. as I can do kissing very well. Yet if again I'm the 'muslim actor' and the question were 'can you do parachuting scene?' I would say no... as I have a 'vertigo' or more correctly termed 'acrophobia', I'm totally afraid of heights.

Again, it intrigued me though Mr. Awesome, why this topic are 'bugging you'?
                                        Are you an actor?
Can you kiss very well? (LOL)

                                        Salam / Peace

I would not do it nor would recommend it.

I believe 1732 to mean not going anywhere near it.
I think any rational person would know that kissing does incite lust and is an excessive step passed looking or even hand-shaking.

If it says Dont Go Near Adultery/Fornication, That to me means just that. I dont even want to be left in a room alone with another woman, nor in a filled room kissing and touching her.

The Only exception I would take is if the other actress is MY WIFE...then I think it would be ok, (however it shouldnt be excessive kissing.
