Wa alaikum assalam
I heard there was another Aussie here. welcome
It was nice to read your story and I was really so happy to hear that your husband has also questioned his way of thinking. Hamdulillah. Yeah, that is such great news!
"Seriously, that place evry 10 seconds, in this hadith, there a hadith that says...the prophet did this, dat...cant do this , cant do that, cant wear this cant go here."
Yup.
And it doesn't make sense. As a westerner you listen to all this stuff and you just can't understand the reasoning. For example with pictures etc. I've heard a couple of things that we shouldn't be pretending that we are ''creators'' by making pictures and also so that we won't get confused and start worshipping them (in my own words there) - I mean come on!!! When was the last time I ever got confused and thought I was God and also when did I worship a picture just because it was on my wall? I can't remember a time.
You definitely did not make the wrong choice when you became Muslim. As you've found though there are people who want to take Islam and make it something very different to how it was intended. When I was studying it before converting I found a way of life that was open, intelligent, loving, supportive, family centred, not too concerned with ''appearances" (in terms of our looks and also status), it was not racist, it was compassionate, it appreciated men and also women...there was an equality and a respect - it was centred around Allah and it was to be God who judges us after we have done our best with the life we've been given.
I was truly disappointed for a while after I converted and found a very different Islam to what I thought I was agreeing too. But then I remembered that people are just people and they do selfish things sometimes, even without being fully aware of it...the Islam we see around us is not always the one that God intended for us. So for me as with many people here it was back to the Quran. That meant back to the beauty I thought I was buying into originally.
InshAllah you will learn a lot here and make some contacts over time. May Allah bless you and your marriage. peace

I used to be a Pentecostal Christian. Not just by name. I mean i used to try and preach to everyone, invit people to church etc. Then I read the Quran to get back at someone was Muslim and said Jesus wasnt God. I wanted to find somethin to use against them. But i got only to Surah 5 and my mind was goin crazy...is this God's words??? I rang up heaps of church people to give me bible verses, so i could feel better. But In my mind Id be like "This dosnt compare to the Quran". I tired watching all the Christian shows on t.v and movies but it didnt help. I couldnt even read the bible anymore. I decided Jesus wasnt God, and I wanted to be a Muslim. This all happened in Feb this year, 1 month before my 20th bday.
Now this is where all the drama began... brickwall
The day I did the marrige contract at the mosque, I was in a room with My partner, and three other people. One of them was like "Oh iv got one wife from such and such, and im gonna get another from Maylasia, and one from here" etc etc. I was like, I thought Muslim men are meant to respect women. I was so freakin about even getin marrried, like is all Muslim men like this? I was thinking. Then i started goin to GIYC in Liverpool,Sydney....what a mistake brickwall
The first day i was there the lady starts talkin about theres no such thing as love, u must expect ur husband to remarry on u. etc etc. I was like, what is rong wit people...seriously. I went back the next time, and tehy were talkin bout hadith. I was like whats dat? They started sayin what they were. I was in my mind thinking, How can they have man made books along side the Quran? I was only muslim for like 25 days then and i knew that the Quran was a prefect book fully detailed.Seriously, that place evry 10 seconds, in this hadith, there a hadith that says...the prophet did this, dat...cant do this , cant do that, cant wear this cant go here.
Then they started talkin bout abrogated verses...no comment.
Every mosque, or Muslim would never quote Quran, just hadith. I started asking sheiks questions like why we nedd hadith blah blah, they just said the Muslims who do not follow the Prophets sunnah is deviant. Istarted reading more and more hadith and i thort "Did i make the rong choice becoming Muslim?
Cos seriously, all those Muslim websites and debates only tell u half the story of their version of Islam. The rest u find out later wen they say, Oh u cant touch Quran with periods, u cant talk to ur male cousins anymore (which no offence to anyone, but im aussie and my cousins are the last person id marry, not my culture or style lol), u cant dye ur hair black, u cant have a dog, must ask permission to leave the house, like come on this is a joke!
I started having talks about my husband about hadith, and hed ring his strict sunnah family from overseas, and hed tell me wat they said. He thought i was falling out of Islam.Or the devil was getin to me and not allowing me to understand hadith. Wat ur telling me i gota put my head around adult breastfeeding? this went on for months, then i gave him verse after verse, silly hadith after hadith. And was like come on. ALL PRAISE TO ALLAH, he changed and said it was hard for him to snap out of the whole blind follower zombie like state. His parents, teachers, friends, shop keepers...every one are all sunnah, sunnah, sunnah. How could he question that?
I am now a proud Muslim who follows the Quran only. I havnt even been Muslim ayear, and all this happened. But i thank Allah that me and my partner are not blind follwers. May Allah guide all of us.
What a journey! Very interesting story.

I know many people on here started out being Sunnis, either by birth or after conversion and abandoning hadith gradually after many struggles.
I, like you, found the whole idea of hadith strange from the start. Not only because most of the hadith I came across didn't make sense and seemed to contradict a message that was supposed to be from God, but also because I could never get my head around how something that was being collected in such an unreliable way could be used as religious law.

Salaam Leyna - I like your new profile pic. )
Now, about hadith - we have hadith SCIENCE. It's a "science" Leyna, so it must be true rotfl
Seriously though, I couldn't relate to hadith at first but I came around...it's like I got caught up in it, for a while anyway. Then at some stage I just couldn't do it anymore. I think you can only deny for so long if you have those doubts inside you. Then you have to come out in the open and admit it just doesn't make sense. May Allah guide all Muslims to the true path. I'm sure I'm a long way off but I do take comfort in the fact that at least now I'm not as confused by Islam. Hamdulillah.
