Pretend that I am a Sunni.
I quote 54-5
"They ask you as to what is allowed to them. Say The good things are allowed to you, and what you have taught the beasts and birds of prey, training them to hunt-- you teach them of what Allah has taught you-- so eat of that which they catch for you and mention the name of Allah over it; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is swift in reckoning. This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers."
Qur'an 54-5
My question is
What are the good things? Does the Qur'an specify or are the "good things" simply everything that is not forbidden? If it is everything not forbidden, why does it mention this at all since what was forbidden was given in 53?
I would then use this to support the ahadith forbidding dogs and snakes etc.

In the case of dogs, we may recall that a dog is kept by the believing companions of the cave as a compa?ion and there is not hint whatsoever that they were doing anything wrong, where if they were there and then should have been asome indication of it, some word or particule that hinted to its inapropriateness. There is not. Therefore, and disregarding any other criticism of the ahadiz as to their purport or authenticity or applicability. and other human common sense, it can be stated that God, as shown in the Qur'an has nothing against keeping dogs as companions, nor as helpers.

I personally think that "the good things" and "pure things" to be relative to each person, hence why it is not detailed. I mean, some nuts and grains are clearly nutritious, but some people may have allergy to it, hence it is best for them to not eat those foods because they're not good for their health/body. Each individual has their own list of what is good and what is not good for them (some are allergic or intolerant to dairy, certain types of fruits etc etc).
Anyway, that is just my personal opinion of what it means to eat "good things".

That is true about dogs and I would respond like that. I am not even sure if there is a hadith which declares you CANNOT eat dogs... I still wonder why the Qur'an repeats the instruction.

Therefore it is not permitted in Islam for someone to eat what they are allergic to.

O ye who believe! Fulfil your undertakings. The beast of cattle is made lawful unto you for food except that which is announced unto you 51
what does mean except that which is announced unto you , is it only cattle is lawfull, meat ?
Eight pairs Of the sheep twain, and of the goats twain. Say Hath He forbidden the two males or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Expound to me (the case) with knowledge, if ye are truthful. (143) And of the camels twain and of the oxen twain. Say Hath He forbidden the two males or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females contain; or were ye by to witness when Allah commanded you (all) this? Then who doth greater wrong than he who deviseth a lie concerning Allah, that he may lead mankind astray without knowledge. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. 6143-144
if everything is lawfull, why did god speak about cattle that it is lawfull ?

My definition of "good things" is anything I truely consider not selfish/bad.
Also, there are some religions that consider any pleasure a sin; even if it is a "good thing"... these verses makes it clear for such people... the Qur'an is fully detailed.
BTW, even truelu authentic Hadith can never "forbid" anything as per
732 - Say "Who is there to forbid the beauty which God has brought forth for His creatures, and the good things from among the means of sustenance?" Say "They are in the life of this world unto all who have attained to faith - to be theirs alone on Resurrection Day." Thus clearly do We spell out these messages unto people of knowledge!
732 - Say "Who has made unlawful the nice things that God has brought forth for His servants and the good provisions?" Say "They are meant for those who believe during this worldly life, and they will be exclusive for them on the Day of Resurrection." It is such that We explain the revelations for those who know.

What are the good things?
The good is said to be something that one takes pleasure in . It is paired several times in opposition to Kh-B-T . For example, in 14/24-26 the good word is rooted and grows compared to the bad word which is uprooted. The inferior crop in hell is distinguished from the good . These two, the bad/inferior and the good , are not equal .

In my understanding, it does not necessarily mean that we are forbidden to eat such food. It is just that we are encouraged to eat food that is pure and good for us since the verses say something along the line of "eat the pure and good things". It's our choices to eat and pure things, and we're free to food impure things (e.g junk food that has no nutritional values) or bad food for our body, then again it is discouraged (though not explicitly forbidden because only four things are forbidden). Anyway, we are given the wisdom by God to know what food is good and what is bad (deep fried potato chips topped with mayonnaise? No, thank you!), so I guess we should start being more careful with what we eat ).
