hierarchy of punishments/expiations/good/bad
-
peace all,
Since my time is limited I thought I'd list here some things I plan on studying later, thus if others are interested they can post their findings here
-
hierarchy of punishments - what I mean by this is if we list the crimes in AQ along with their punishments we can get a good idea of what crimes are considered most severe through AQ's "eyes", and it may also allows us to check our various understandings of punishments if one or some seem out of place
-
hierarchy of expiations - what I mean by this AQ often gives us ways of making amends for various infractions, thus if we list them, we can get a good idea of how AQ sees things, and also check our understanding.
-
a hierarchy of good/bad - a simple article to list the best and worst traits in AQ - what I mean by this is AQ often says "the best among you.... do or are XYZ" or " XYZ is the most righteous", and "XYZ are the worst of you", so to get a list of such attributes/actions, would give us a good indicator of the most important things according to AQ.
As a side note, during my studies I often do significant research and analysis, and this is very time-consuming, thus I was thinking it may be better to group together and pool resources and time in the future if others wanted to start a structured online study group, i.e. we divide subject X into parts, assign each of us a part to study, then share our findings, then discuss/refine them. Just a thought, perhaps for the future.

Sorry to digress a little from what you ask. I doubt that there are all that many punishments by law in the Qur'an. Some of those which are counted as such, mainly thanks to discussions in free minds, I have come to the conclusion that they are not such punishments.
If we take 4.15-16, I do not think that they are talking about any punishment. Also those that deal with qisas are not punishments, but civil settlements for the wronged party. In fact the onlly punishments that I can think offhand ar those for extramarital sex in 24. and the attached punishment of the slanderer. The one about theft I also understand from it that what it enjoins is to disposses the robber of the mean of robbing or keeping the fruit of it. I do not think it goes into the matter of its punishment.
Which brings me to the well known statement that the Qur'an is not a law book, but a guide, as it says it of itself. From it we should get the principles to legistlate, but not the laws, which overwhelmly are not there. I guess that the interpretations as punishments of those ayas I mention may hve come forced from the text by the legslators who did their best to follow the Qura'an in their aim at legislation and milked laws from where they could possibly even with difficulty extract them.
When some people write in the forum they seem to have fully assimilated certain understanding from, for instance, 4.15-16 that turn them in legislative ayas, where nothing in them or those sorrounding them invite such understanding.
