This year will be my second year fasting in Ramadan inshaAllah, and I want to know whether or not celebrating Eid is Islamic or not. I don't remember reading about it in the Quran. All I could see last Eid was people buying themselves new clothes (which looked ova the top), n toys n money etc. People fasted all day only to spoil ourselves rotten at nite. I call this greedy. Everyone asked me "oh are u getting new clothes or scarfs" etc. No I didn't because i didn't believ I earnt them somehow in Ramadan just because I fasted, Allah told us to fast. Id rather use my money for charity rather than vanity... I hope u see my point.

      You are absolutely right, sister!

The two Eids, "Eid-ul-Fitr" and "Eid-ul-Adha" are not mentioned and ordered in Allah's Exalted Quran.
So, Allah didn't command us to celebrate Eids.

It is indeed, the clergies of the ummah who issued this commandment, and the whole of the ummah (more than 99.99%), whom the religious scholars have made their slaves, follow them and celebrate Eids.

      Eids are not Allah's Commandments.
So, it is nothing but a wastage of money. It is nothing but becoming extravagant.

The ummah spends billions of dollars on vanity, when at the same time there are, in this ummah, and around the world, poor, who are without food, shelter and medicine.
Those poor, they and their children, crying and dying in deprivation, but the unjust rich of the ummah celebrating Eids, which is not a commandment in Al-Quran.

Not in words, but with their actions the cruel rich are answering the poor, "We don't care if you and your children are without food, shelter and medicine, and dying,---for us Eid is more important than your basic necessities.---We will let you die in deprivation, and not care a bit."

If only, people had read Allah's Quran and had Iman in It from the core of their hearts,---then they would have know that---
We can not live a plushy life.-----We can not live in big expensive houses, wear gold and expensive clothes, eat expensive foods,-------when there are a lot of people hungry, without medicine and shelter.
Living style, houses, clothes, foods, must be,-----must be simple (not tempting to others).

We are not given to use up,-----whatever is more than our needs,---must be given out.
If we make an average of the Rizq in this world,---no one can be rich,---and no one will be hungry.

If we try to become rich,---we will destroy the average.-------And we will be the criminals.
We can not become rich,---until a lot of people become poor, destitute and die in deprivation.

Because-------Allah sent down Rizq in accordance with our "Needs",-----and not in accordance with our "Unjust Wishes".

I look at it like this. Do what makes you happy as far as how to end Ramadhan. I choose to celebrate with yummy food and prayer. The Qu'ran doesn't mention any Eid specifically the way it's generally thought of. But it also doesn't mention Free-Minds forums and I think many of us can agree that quite a bit of good comes from the forums. If charity or anything else not prohibited in the Quran is what brings you a sense of peace then go for it. The Qu'ran isn't supposed to give us difficulty and hardship.

            Again

The Qu'ran isn't supposed to give us difficulty and hardship.

Indeed, Allah does not want to throw us into difficulties and hardships,-------but what about those who are poor, hungry, without food, without medicine, without shelter, without even the basic necessities of life???

And, on the other hand, some people want to celebrate festivals, and live in excess, only to please themselves and only to make a show-off.

This "Way of Life (Deen)" is not in accordance with the "Teachings of Al-Quran".

            Quote from rahenijaat1, above

We can not live a plushy life.-----We can not live in big expensive houses, wear gold and expensive clothes, eat expensive foods,-------when there are a lot of people hungry, without medicine and shelter.

No one will disagree with the Quote in red, above ^^

              Peace,

              I believe this also.

I see no harm in a family or community get-together and eating nice food and whatnot. It is always good to congregate in the name of Allah, and I see no problem with it being at the end of the presribed fast.

As with all things however, we are to be in moderation. This doesn't mean we begin spending lavishly, and forgetting about charity and what we learned during our fast. But if people want to congregate and have a little lawful fun, then I see no problem with it. Have fun!

              May peace be with you.

Well brother, it all depends on one's Iman and Taqwa.

-----"So follow The Quran of your Lord and sacrifice." (1082)

This is not sacrificing a goat or sheep on Eid-ul-Azha.

This is sacrificing one's unjustified wishes, which takes one beyond the limits.
So, sacrifice these unjustified wishes (i.e. comfort, amusements, enjoyments,) by giving out to the destitutes what is more than your basic necessities.

                  ==================================================

There are layers of understanding, that Al-Quran keeps unfolding to a believer, when he keeps on contemplating, reflecting.

There are grades of Taqwa, that one keeps on attaining.

                  ==================================================

                  Peace brother!

                  A lot of Peace!

                          Salam,

I dont see any problem with celebrating Eid. But people transgress , just like christmas shopping, people are willing to use credit cards for a grand luxurious Eid while there are others that need the money for everyday survival. This to me doesnt make much sense. But yes, I do celebrate Eid, and I dont remember the last time I actually bought things for me or others to celebrate Eid. At most, our community, we gathered together for the regular meals after a long time. Imagine, if instead, all the muslims made sure that the poor people would gather for meals instead of us who are lucky.

I do not find anything wrong with celebrations or feasting with friends. But, there are limits and balanced approach. I do not believe in the hard core buddhist style interpretations which lead to suffering unnecessarily, almost looks as if its sadomasochism

                          PEACE

Indeed spending money and being extravagent is never good and many muslims do this on Eid but it doesn't mean that you yourself to not have to celebrate it. I treat Eid more as cultural where friends and family meet up, have fun and have a nice meal together. And of course this is always done without spending buckloads on clothes, cinema tickets and whatnot P

Back in 2009, I was in Pakistan when it was Eid. We slaughtered 4 large goats and distributed 90% of the meat to poor families around my area so going with this example Eid can be a positive day.

Eid isn't far away and I'm looking forward to it )

I agree with you in this.

As a matter of fact, Eid is not a Commandment of Allah in His Exalted Book of Commandments.

So, our Prophet can never never issue an (out of Al-Quran commandment) from his own desire.
In fact, Eid is nothing but being extravagant. And such a person is a brother of Shaitaan.

Ok i know this is old... BUT IM SO GLAD ITS NOTIN THE QURAN!!!!! I ALWAYS WONDERED WHY ALLAH WOULD NEED US TO DO ANIMAL SACRIFICES!!! THATS WHAT PAGANS AND SATANISTS DO! Istaghfur Allah if im wrong.

I will join you in "re-opening" this thread simply because if one more person asks me if I am going to the Eid prayers I am going to scream....NO, I am NOT going. I remember my first Eid-Ul-Fitr...mumbling some phrase over and over again, returning home a different way than I came, nice clothes....what I remember most was the women and how they were so loud and showing off their clothes and what not...reminded me so much of Christianity.

Then my second Eid-Ul-Fitr they had to drag a brother out of there because he was ready to fight someone...seriously!!

Not in the Qur'an, not doing it. I left Christianity because of all the culturalism and false practices, and I refuse to do it as a muslim.

                                      Peace,

                                      Amina

I don't believe in celebrating Eid, nor Eid salat.
When i was living with my orthodox Sunni family member, I refused to go to Eid prayers.
He kind of knew what my answer would be... it's not in the Quran )

                                        About sacrificing;
The nice thing is that at least is they give food to the poor... however, they should do that regularly, and not just a couple days a year... it's like zakat, the traditional belief is that you have to give it once every year i think... that's not what the Quran states.

                                          Salam and Peace!

                                          Again

No one will disagree with the Quote in red, above ^^

                                          Peace!
Let me just share some ideas, that might be a bit controversial at times...

                                          1. It's impossible to keep everything "not tempting to others" (as written in the red text above). This sounds like we must hide and guard to make sure no-one will get jealous of us... which is impossible. People will ALWAYS be jealous, no matter how much or little you have. Temptation has nothing to do with money. It's a result of a deluded image of reality.

                                          2. Why is it bad that some people are richer than others? Allah created people with different capabilities, talents, initiative and drive. Everyone cannot be the same in output and earning.
At the same time I agree that there is loads of unjust practices exploiting people and keeping them in poverty. Such practices are of course wrong and disgusting.

                                          3. The hidden reasons of why certain things happen to certain people, both what we think are good things and bad things, are often not understood. Allah only knows. Why would more money be good? Perhaps it will just destroy you quicker. Wealth is not necessarily a measurement of anything. If a person acts as per Allah's laws and ways, he/she may be rich or poor... but the point of this life has nothing to do with what we usually call success. Fairness, modesty, balance, equality, compassion, mercy, kindness, justice is something you have to start growing from inside out, by first connecting on a spiritual level to Allah. After that you may be contented with no money, or Allah may make you very rich, out of which you will do good things.

                                          4. I totally agree that the quran (and the rest of life) has many different levels of understanding to it. That's why I don't think there will ever be a consensus on the meaning of the verses.

I like the spirit of your posts!
                                          Peace and kind regards
