    Peace everyone.

Just was curious to see peoples opinion on the "Evil Eye". My husband has spoke of this and hung a stupid little hand trinket in the baby's room to prevent the "Evil Eye" I ripped it down calling it shirk. He said ask anyone about this "evil eye", so I am asking. Another example I asked him if he had headaches during his fasting, since I was having killer ones and this is really the first time I have been able to keep my fasts with my diabetes. He said, he has no headaches. Well the next day he got a headache and said it was MY FAULT! I gave him the "evil eye". I told him if it made him feel better give me all the evil eyes he wants because I don't believe in such things, my protection is with Allah.

I honestly can't believe in this and I find it funny. It is so pagan in it background and superstitious. What happened to nothing happens expect by Allah's decree?

Any thoughts?? Sorry if my belief that is is bogus offends anyone.

    Peace )

      Peace,

An "evil eye" is a semitic idiom for stinginess and hoarding wealth that should be used for charity and good deeds. But somehow it became associated with cursing someone. My wife's family is Italian, and they have stories of family members a long time ago having rituals to ward off the "maloyk", which is what they call the evil eye.

Headaches during fasting has more to do with what a person has been eating all year prior to fasting. As fat deposits are broken down, toxins and by-products from rich food and unhealthy food being digested hits the bloodstream, causing headaches, and sometimes even jitteriness and anxiety. But it has absolutely nothing to do with the evil eye.

      Peace,
      Joel

The so called "EVIL EYE" is a (Stupid) superstition, prevalent among people and culture prominently around Mediterranean sea. (Jews, Arabs, Greek, Latin/Italians etc..).

The basic (fraudulent) concept was due to "envy"... bad luck might happens one people because other people envied him/her..

        It was based on

        1. Human (bad) habits of blaming one mishap to other people.

"Oh gosh... a cat stole my lunch as I'm writing this... this must be due to the "Evil Eye" from one of my neighbor.. I knew that he must be ENVIOUS of me because I just bought a new Laptop..."

Illogical YES.. Irrelevant YES.. Inconsistent YES.. Ridiculous YES.. Stupid YES..

        Salam / Peace

          Salam,

If one could really give an evil eye due to hatred and do damage, why do you think the world invest $1.6 TRILLION every year on military budget ?

Lol, maybe they are investing in research for how to use the evil eye in military applications. In some secret CIA laboratory, there are two people making mean faces at each other, trying to see who dies first. And it probably costs about a million a day.

Do we have a smiley for that?

Apparently no, this isnt a dedicated forum for Hadithers. So I think the smiley collection is free of superstitious things.

Everything works in mysterious and not so mysterious ways. Now while it's unlikely that someone being jealous of your new shoes is unlikely to cause a razor sharp fleck of metal to suddenly break off the car in front of you and slice your head clean off final destination style, everything is connected. If someone hates you then their hate will manifest subtly through all the things connecting you and them; there are a LOT of things connecting us all! The overwhelming majority of our troubles in society come from envy/greed manifested as malice.

                  What about chapter 113 (al-falaq)?

                    Salam,

1131 Say I seek refuge with the Lord of the dawn,
1132 From the evil among His creation,
1133 And from the evil of darkness as it falls,
1134 And from the evil of those who blow on knots,
1135 And from the evil of an envier when he envies.

Is the blowing on knots refered to black magic ? From my experience and understanding, people in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh, many resort to con artists who claim to do black magic (to cause harm to others). I never understood this verse in a way that concludes that black magic works or exists, but the truth is that the people that would go to the extent of doing such things to cause harm to me are evil and wouldnt they harm me by other means should they have a chance ? Their blowing on knots is a sign of their evil character for me, not that the knot itself can do anything. I have noticed the evil not in the knots, but in those who blow on knots. Hence I seek refuge from those who blow in knots.

                    PEACE

Envy-ing is indeed 'forbidden' / 'evil'.. according to the ten commandments..

"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house or fields, nor his male or female slaves, nor his ox or ass, or anything that belongs to him."

Which makes me wonder.. where does 'similar' instruction about the 'evilness' of envying / coveting appears in the Quran?

1134 And from the evil of those who blow on knots,

                      Nafatsati fi'l uqod = (those) who breathe/blew the bond/contract/agreement/promise..

Perhaps it's not referring to 'magic' after all.. yet..
From the 'evilness' of those who breaches the agreement/contract/promises..

This could mean many things, ranging from those who violate the peace agreement, employer who violates the work contract by not paying the employee his/her due salary, those who performed fraud, deceit, promising something which never came true etc..

Now regarding this 'evil eye' thingy.. Quran makes it clear that it is purely a hoax..

"Whatever has befallen upon you of good is from God, but whatever has befallen upon you of evil, it is from yourself." (479)
So please.. don't blame others for your mishaps... most of the time (if not always) it is due to your own fault...

                      Salam / Peace
