Your Family & Your Belief in God Alone
-
Peace everyone,
I just thought that along with your personal journeys to the belief in God alone, how has your family situation been? What is their faith and their view of yours? Were they Quran-alone Muslims before you, or did you convince them of it, or do you peacefully coexist with differing beliefs, or hide it from them, etc.?
Please share your stories if you feel comfortable doing so. I'm very interested in these type of social dynamics.
May peace be with you all.

Greetings and Peace, all group
My marriage was interfaith with me following monotheistic vedanta and my wife nominally following Methodist Christianity. During a military deployment, I came to Islam even as my wife got more involved in her church. It rocked our marriage and nearly destroyed it.
She had and still has misgivings about Islam. There was no shortage of people to pour poison in her ear about Islam.
I prayed for ALLAH to strengthen the marriage or to give me what ALLAH knows to be better. The marriage got better. My wife still claims the Methodist faith--but she rejects trinity and a bunch of other stuff. I don't worry for her future because I believe that she is a monotheist.
There are at least two local mosques; I don't go to them. I'd rather have my faith than friends. All the muslims that I personally know are (to my knowledge) in Afghanistan. Free-minds is my link to the muslim community.
~May ALLAH see fit to Guide all seekers.

Peace Abdul-Hadi,
Awesome story. I'm glad to hear that your marriage survived and that your wife even became a Monotheist after. I think that's the most important part for her.
Have you ever studied the Biblical gospels? There are many areas that show things about Jesus that the Quran confirms. You can clearly prove certain things like Jesus surviving the cross, proof that he was only a human, that he didn't intend to/nor did die to save sins, etc. Like you said the most important thing is that your wife is a Monotheist, but maybe with a bit more effort you can show her Islam. Just a suggestion.
May peace be with you.

@Eikonoklastes I'm pleased about the outcome, too. I was raised Christian, and have read or studied many religious texts including the Bible. One of the better scholarly works I've read on the Bible is The Grounds of Christianity Examined.

Should my wife ever show interest in Islam, ISA, I'll support her as best I can. After a certain point, it becomes counterproductive to pursue/press any issue. On the other hand, there are no shortage of folks to invite to monotheism! It matters little to me the vehicle for monotheism--any "religion" or "philosophy" will suffice.
Is it better for a person to follow an organized religion other than <reader's>, or to claim atheism? hmm Organized religion has a kernel of truth surrounded by ritual and other man-made additions. GOD needs nothing from us; everything that we do results in individual betterment or detriment. For example, ritual either helps an individual or not.
AQ weighs in on the matter of religion
262 Surely those who believe; and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabians, whoever of them believes in GOD and the Last Day and does good works; they will have their recompense with their Lord, and there is no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.
ALLAH knows best.

As I told in other posts,my family are sunni and they are not tolerant with others beliefs.I know that because I had many problems but me, I am tolerant.Everyone is free to choose his religion as God says in the Quran.
Peace.

I hope it will work out inchaAllah

Peace Ikrame,
Sometimes fathers can be difficult when it comes to adjustments in "moral/principle" of religion. I can relate to you almost first-hand. I think it has a lot to do with male ego and pride. I think you're doing just fine on your own, and your mother and sister sound like great company.
And lol @ "pray like a dude" nope
May peace be with you.

Same here (Except for the divorced bit.) My mom is more tolerant of my beliefs than my Dad who constantly tries to hassle me every so often. For example sometimes when he watches the news and sees 'suicide bombers' he's convinced that I'm going end up just like them. Every time I try to tell him that this isn't Quranic teaching he never listens. He feels like he knows more about the Quran than I do (even though he's never even read the book before) In any case stuff like that doesn't bother me any more. I know that I'm guided and I know that I'm on the right path. When it comes to parents hassling you about your religion always try to remember your duty to God. Your parents are not going to be held responsible for your actions . You are. So don't ever succumb to pressure. And don't let anyone make you feel like 'shit' . You are guided because God has given you guidance . You are better off than most.
Peace,
Kevin.

You're right but I should tell the truth that bothers me even if I have to risk abandonment of some family members but I know it's worth it because we're not alone we have Allah. my mom and sister are openminded people and definitly good company elhamdoelilah eikonoklastes thanks ) I think it does have to do with male pride/ego or some kind of weird thing why is it that you and KD501 also struggle with your dads not with your mothers. KDC150 thanks you re right I shouldn't give them such power and I know I'm blessed with the best thing.
Either way nice to read I'm not alone in my fight even though I don't wish you both and kindness45 and other submitters the burden of this struggle but maybe it can shape us to stronger people and Allah is inchaAllah with us. love you all.

PeaceIkrame, You win the price for the longest sentence today sun
I got problems with my dad as well, but actually quite the opposite. When he was a kid his mom used to force him to church every sunday. The priests (christian) would stand there and dominate and judge "If you masturbate you will go blind! and Jesus hates you if you don't put money in the collection!" and crap like that. Naturally my father rejected all religion, he sees it as opium to the masses.....So he does not care too much about my faith....But all I need to do is to keep my mouth shut so I cannot compare my very small dad-issue with you guys.
My wife is sunni, she is cool with me being AQ, we run into small issues sometimes but in general all is OK...But the muslim community where we live.......my goodness they make her life difficult for being married to me. Not my life though because they don't dare talk to me. But it makes me sad to see her sad.
-
Lets just say I am the only muslim from a strict Roman-Catholic family, so they think I lost my mind 3 years ago, due to stress, and they took it personally. rotfl They wanted to blame someone but there was no one but me. Things are finally almost back to normal, just we never discuss religion, like we used to.
My husband is sunni, he is not upset I am AQ, though we too have issues on certain things. He does disregard some hadith we talk alot and have civil discussions, even when I tell him I fear shirk for him with how he idolizes the Prophet. In my masjid, however, they just assume I am uneducated in Islam because I am fairly "new"and blame my husband for not teaching me... poor guy...lol.
-
my Husband although he identifies as christian isnt overly religious,,,,,,he leaves me to myself and has always supported me ......he is happy as long as I am. As regards our children we teach them about god but do not tell them they are muslim or christian...to us the main thing is to serve god
My sisters and mother/father howoever think im going through a phase > and despite never reading the Quran try to tell me what they hate about Islam....which is mostly taken from the crazies they allow on TV and the myths from hadith that are now mainstream .....................i just tell them to read before they comment ;D

My family is non-denominational Christian. They don't know I'm a Muslim (they live in Georgia/Florida and I live in Texas). I haven't broken the news to them yet -- I think I need a little more time to show them that, if I've changed, it's for the better. Not really sure how to broach the subject with them, honestly.

Non denominational christian in many ways are very close to the non-sectarians movement.
I always advice any christian that I met to 'not converting' (read converting to sunniism or Muhammedanism).
Instead I told them that Jesus himself is a moslem, which then I explain to them what is a moslem..The evidence of Jesus was teaching islam are evident in the Gospel especially in his prayer as well...
"Let Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"As thus; be a muslim and do not convert (to any sect)
To your family; I might recommend that you explain to them what is a 'muslim' and if the 'name' doesn't suit them, well change it to another name.. (what's in a name anyway??)
Salam / Peace
