ALLAH says in al-quran (4116,44 that the act of shirk is unforgivable. Not that he can forgive but will not, but that it is unforgivable*.
If you claim to do something as an X, you serve that X.
For example, "As a Muslim, I brush my teeth with the miswak". This "Muslim" is brushing their teeth with a stick. Now the question of whether it is "Muslim" to do that arises. Is this person being true to "Islam" by doing that? The debate rages.
Or the classical fear/violence situation on this forum between "Muslim" family and "Quranists". The family alienate the "hadith rejector". Why, because he has defined himself as a "hadith rejector" or "quran alone", he alienates himself! This seems useful when you first reject the validity of ahadith but it's just as useless a term as "flying magical unicorn rejector". I don't go around labelling myself as that but it should be obvious!
If you are serving any ism, capitalism, communism, nationalism, your own ego, whatever, you are committing "shirk", knowingly or unknowingly. The action of "shirk" draws its worldly punishment to who committed it like the act of chopping off your own hand.
Try serving the truth, then there is no room for any vain talk about whether you are being a "true truth seeker".

In my opinion I try not to label anyone and myself too as it creates a narrow minded approach to people and yourself.
If you stay open minded and look at others based on what they do and not what they say then that is a sensible approach in my opinion.

In certain cases labeling is necessary as when you are living in a society that wants you to perform in certain way, then you have to separate yourself form the rest of the people. Living in states i did not have this problem but since i moved to pakistan i have to separate myself from the herd.
Thanks to sadqa-e-jaria (good points accumulation) everyone wants to guide you in their way of islam. Yet no one guides you from quran they use the hadith. PEACE.

I would agree if this is a recommendation to let go of any violent hostility and 'social identity' - ism in order to find the truth.
However 'debating' is a civilized manner to find the truth...
Disagreement always happened and it's a normality, how we act out of that disagreement is the real test..
If we can agree to disagree peacefully and be tolerant to other people's opinion that's okay... if one try to resolve the disagreement by intimidation, terror, aggression or other violent things than that's definitely not okay...For example, "As a Muslim, I brush my teeth with the miswak". Which is okay.. I support those kind of debates.. within the debate I shall state my opinion that "It doesn't matter, whether you brushing (or not brushing) your teeth with anything"...

I would agree to that.. let me add some additional 'ism' then.. "Arabism", "Islamism/Sectarianism","Ethnicity-ism"...
Which sprung from an ego that "My ancestor/religion/sect/ethnicity/skin color/language/culture/favorite holy book are better AND deserve the right to dominate other people".Salam / Peace

Most/all of these "isms" are the opinion of our ancestors. You will not find any divine justification for them and when you examine the principles behind them they are all hollow in some way and promote division. The common saying of all the disbelievers in the quran, is that they found their forerunners promoting their idols and see no reason to change. I agree it is good to promote separation when you are clearly in the right, but 90% of the time neither party is actually clearly in the right.
If you claim to be theist... Then you antagonise all the people who misunderstand/misconcieve theistic beliefs and claim atheism. Or if Muslim, then you antagonise "Christians" and "Jews". Both imaginary names for people who live a certain way.
If you claim to be patriotic... Then you value the life of one human over another simply because one lives inside an imaginary line you like more than another imaginary line.1240 - You do not serve besides Him but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent down any authority for them; judgment is only Allah's; He has commanded that you shall not serve aught but Him; this is the right religion but most people do not know

Good thoughts. I could find a label good enough to classify me with other individuals in the same boat. Apart from my belief in oneness of my Lord and his authorized scripture's identification. I hardly find another person that follows Qur'an alone to have same understanding of all the signs of God in His book. I believe, this is what taught me to be nice and friendly with everyone.
Let God guide us all.
