Sound off if that is you! I am from an Irish Catholic American family and the only Muslim in it. This can make things a bit odd as I am sure you can imagine. There are also no Mosques in this area where I can go off to pray. Would love to hear the experience of some people in similar situations.

I was born into a Protestant family. Since childhood I have had only very limited contacts with members of that family.
I do not know of any other Muslims in my community. I believe the nearest Mosque, which I have not visited, is about fifty miles away.

Yea. I gotta say, I find things from this point of view so funny. The idea that people of other religions wouldn't have a complete understanding of Christianity had never occurred to me. The Christian misunderstanding of Islam is a given however and makes being a Quranist a hardship. My Catholic aunt accused me of being a burger king Muslim "Have it your way."

Years ago an extended family member expressed shock at my reversion and accused me of ?worshipping Mohammed.? When I told her that I worship only the one God, she told me that she knew better, that Islam is about ?worshipping Mohammed.?
Then there are all the ?traditional? Muslims, and others who have known ?traditional? Muslims, who would say that we are not Muslims because we do not dress as they do and fill our days with prayers derived from hadiths relating to so much minutiae of everyday life.
It strikes me as very sad, too, that most Christians in this part of the world are also so ignorant about the history of their (mainstream) Christian dogma.

              Greetings and Peace, all group

I was raised Christian but stopped attending church services before I was a teenager because of moral misgivings.

As a young teenager, I read Living at the Source Yoga Teachings of Vivekananda and embraced monotheistic Vedanta/practical philosophy.

I read other religious/philosophical texts and alleged religious texts over the years. I read a poor translation of the Qur'an around the age of 28, but it had no impact other than to disprove what "haters" had to say about Islam.

At the age of 33, I read the Qur'an, translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Although I normally read fast, I took a full month to read and consider the contents of AQ--and then embrace Islam. A few months later I rejected extra-Quranic sources such as hadith.

May ALLAH see fit to guide all seekers.

              peace

              ~Abdul-Hadi

From a strict Roman Catholic home... Irish decent I was serving mass as an altar girl and working for the Bishop up till I converted. I stayed working for him 6 months after I convert and was a "closet Muslim". My family has a strong Islamphobia. It is better now. At first my mom asked why would I want 72 virgins and worship a sex manic. They have no idea concerning the facts of their religion, but they made sure to research mine. Now IF we speak religion, I tell her I don't listen to those hadith they are not authentic. She says at lease I am consistant. I would tell her in the beginning the bible was not authentic in many areas, especially in the Gospels. But how could I when I was learning about these hadith which really is the same sort of thing. My masjid is very close, my husband was employed there for 2 years. I go alot, however, I don't fit in too well. A few sisters asked why I had on lipgloss and why I painted my toe nails, That was their main concern. The funny thing is, I have notice these women that are "secluded" not interacting with people, they have the WORSE manners. At Iftar they will trample you to get to the food, they push, shove cut the line. They will take something right off your plate. It is unbeleivable! I would never want to take my family to the community dinner to experience Islam like that.. OMG they would just keep the idea that Muslims are animals and treat their women as such.

It is hard being the only Muslim in a Roman Catholic family, My mother still works for the church.. can you say ackward.

                  Hello all,

I don't understand what is wrong with being "plain human being" as what in a manner of The God created all of us? There is no such thing in Quran such as "converting" from one religion to another. But there is only one thing a plain person who surrendered (muslim=surrendered, islam=surrendering) him/herself to God. As a new beginner to Quran, please don't give too much credit Muslims around you. You can caught into that trap easily if you follow their advices. Just find the truth in the Book for yourself. This Book is the most strange thing in this world. And it deserves more intellectual interaction.

Therefore set your face to the religion purely, the upright creation upon which He originated people. There is no changing of the creation of God. This is the valuable religion, although most people do not know ? (3030)

                  Regards.

                    Spot on!

Converting and conversion only exist within sectarian mindset.. (or other exclusive group such as street gang or mafia)
Moslems are spread everywhere within any sects.. there are christian moslems, jewish moslem, sunni moslem, shiite moslem, buddhist moslem etc...

                    Salam / Peace

Almost the exact same except that I am a male. I do still have respect for the structure of the church and consider is the lesser of many evils. My practicing of Islam has waned over the months, though I still believe. I am never really approached religiously as I don't "look" like a muslim. Thanks for sharing. I rather enjoyed.

I too am from a Catholic Family. Almost 99% of my extended family and my x-wife's family are all catholic, with a few atheists. All my friends and coworkers are all Christian or agnostic or atheists.

I have one other Quranist Muslim friend who converted after meeting me. We are all we have and there is no mosques near us, not that we would ever go to one either.

I do thank God though that all my family and friends have been, for the most part, very supportive and accepting of what I believe. I really don't have anything to complain about regarding treatment and respect, for the most part, from friends and family.

Actually no, you don't need to pray at all. Prayer is a waste of time.

I guess all the Prophets, Messengers and believers mentioned in the Quran who prayed to God, even with their prayers reiterated for us, were all wasting their time? God even says He answers the prayers but I guess that's not your Islam either.

Sometimes I wonder if you have ever even read the Quran.

But they didn't pray to anyone. And WOW lol, you read a translation from someone who has been affected by hadiths, from a corrupted Quran changed by the hadithists and it said Allah answered their prayers. I guess I was wrong and you enlightened me!

I'm not quite sure if you understand what Pantheism means.

"Pantheism is the view that the Universe (or Nature) and God (or divinity) are identical"

Pretty sure I don't believe a single bit of that.

I grew up protestant, and am now the only muslim in my known extended family. My parents and extended family are all rabidly anti-islam, and all believe the jews belong in palestine and that literally anything done by them is justified. My parents do not know I'm muslim, but my wife knows and is just quietly tolerant, but hates it.

You mentioned there are no mosques in your area. I have a few here in the Austin, TX area, but frankly i'm afraid of them. Maybe it's because I was raised to be afraid of Muslims, but if they knew my beliefs, I don't know what would happen, so I steer clear. The free-minds forum is the only believing community I have, so God bless all of you with muslim spouses!
