zulfa means nearness, and zulaf is the plural (broken plural as in sura (s) and swuar (p) The final alif at the end of zulaf (zulafa) is for grammatical reasns, the final noun (zulafan) is the indicator of the indefinite . Zulafan of night means few hours nearer to day time (evening, twiligt). Zulufan min allail is extra explanation to the second "taraf", the first taraf being dawn prayer. The verse could be understood thus
tarafai (two tarafs extremities) annahar wa zulafan min allail indicated the time not the number of salat
