I am confused over the meaning of this

"Allah accept the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and repent soon afterwards; to them will Allah turn in mercy For Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom. "

God has told us that he will forgive all sins (except Shirk if you die on it) in various parts of the Quran but I am now wondering what it means with "evil in ignorance". Does that mean he doesn't accept repentance of those who knowingly sin? or does ignorance simply mean that doing evil at all is ignorance?

    Thanks

Indeed Allah has made it a right for acceptance of repentance/approval of reversion for those people only who when do an act of evil under the spur/dominating influence of emotionalism/passion,

          Peace Mazhar!
I would have to disagree with the meaning of " spur/dominating influence of emotionalism/passion", because that can be translated by some as "peer pressure" & !
The triliteral root jm h lm ( &#1604 occurs 24 times in the Quran, all of which have a constant meaning of "ignorance" ( http//corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=jhl)

The 3 verses which mention sinning ignorantly/acceptable Repentence are
          417 bijahlatin in ignorance
          (65419) bijahlatin in ignorance
          (161197) bijahlatin in ignorance ...

Repentence from my understanding from these verses is thus seen as acceptable in the sight of God for those who do wrong while not knowing!
~Peace & may the Lord God increase our Knowledge & Understanding! pr
Blessed is God; Knower of all secrets and declarations!

So say this person did haram knowingly in the past but stopped his actions eventually and repented. His repentance wouldn't be accepted? It really would feel odd and contradictory to the whole accepting of all sins of those who repent. Unless this verse rather references that he ALSO accepts ones done in ignorance or rather ignorance meaning that any sin is ignorance in the first place? afterall doing fornication, lying or murder are clearly done knowingly, so that would mean they are not forgiven by this logic?

417 indeed the repentance on The God to those who they do the evil/horrible in ignorance furthermore they repent from near (shortly afterwards) so those forgiveness The God on them and is The God Knowing Wise

Example is those infatuated with numerology (e.g. non-existent nineteen code) and remove verses due to ignorance of basic probability and incomprehension of reading and applying logic. Once shown the stupidity (btw, "the evil/horrible" appears 19 times) and quickly desist propagating nonsense will perhaps be forgiven.

                Peace Aryan Warrior!
I think you may have a point there, and so the lord God grant us understanding pr

God defines What is and what is Not acceptable repentance.
                417
                418

This means that you have to repent/stop before you reach your time of death.
The first step you have to do is Stop sinning in the first place (i.e Repentance). The second step is asking God for his forgiveness/mercy/guidance/protection from sining again. The third step is to do righteous work in place, because God, in his Mercy-full-Ness states that good deeds erase/substitute bad deeds (11114) and that He counts one good deed as 10x (6160)

Always keep in mind that God is Good, Merciful, and abdundent in Loving-kindness. He guides those who seek his approval, (516) and those who persevere/strive in his cause(2969). And As stated in one member's signature, no matter how far you've gone into the wrong path, you can still turn back!
                God forgives all sins! (3953)

Blessed is God, The Merciful, Righteous Lord Of The Universe!

So by this logic what it means is that since you have to repent before death that you are ignorant while alive and therefore what it refers to. As well the fact that a sin is definately not the opposite of ignorance and therefore would be just that. Thus if one stops it they have lft that ignorant state of unjust. Am I correct?

I would think that God meant ignorant as, that you did not know it was a sin.
If you kept repeating a sin, and you knew it was wrong, your best bet is to just ask God for his forgiveness! see the 3 steps that i stated upove.

May the Lord God plot out our sin and overlay righteous work in their place pr
Blessed is God, who redeems and forgives sins!

Your Judgment my brother, rests with God Almighty!
All you can do is ask for God's forgiveness, repent, Reform, and do better!
Ask God for his Mercy, Guidance, and support. I wasn't a believe of God Almighty at a certain point of my life. Nevertheless God guided me. God's mercy is eminent. He might punish/condemn/debase, but it is Mercy that He ascribed to himself! God is Good, God is Good. God states in the Quran to not dispaire his mercy.
Take it from me, at this point of my life, I don't care if i go to hell of heaven, because i think i would rather support God Almighty unconditionally. God states that his approval is greater than being heaven(972), and so shouldn't we be God's dedicated unconditional servants?
The devil is going to hell, but he's unconditionally going after mankind to pull them down with him into the pit of fire. Why don't we go against the devil (who lead our forefathers out of Heaven in the first place) and support God Almighty in his majesty?

May the Lord God make us his dedicated, unconditional servants! pr

Oh I agree, I just fear if weakness strikes me that I can still be forgiven. Anyways I asked today about this a shia scholar. Yeah I know he's no Quranist, but Shias at least won't try to contradict the Quran with a Hadith and this thing isn't hadith based either. Regardless he told me that what this phrase means is that God ALSO forgives those who sinned in ignorance and that the word only wasn't there in the original arabic text. As well as he supporting it with many other verses from the Quran on how God has stating he will forgive ALL sins and it makes sense considering one who does fornification is without a doubt knowingly doing it yet the Quran says one can be forgiven from it as well as how only Shirk is described as the only unforgivable sin without mentioning that knowingly doing something makes it unforgivable.

So I think I can let me fears melt once again.

Why do we discuss what God thinks or does? Why do you say about God what you do not know? How dare you interpret His Will?
He simply can do what humans can not...

And in the Quran it is written that God can or will forgive ANYTHING and ALL, except the shirk! (associating anything with Him)

Even Moses killed a man, was a murderer, and God made him a prophet!!!

Is illicit sex not done by the learned scholars or clergymen who have the knowledge of the Book also? Do you think they do it in ignorance?

                                Guys! Guys! Guys!

I like what you both say here. What I wanna know is the meaning of ignorance. I've realized that the Arabic text doesn't use the word "only" anywhere in it and says that "God forgives those who have committed sin in ignorance" Thus it is like an "also" catagory but I still wanna make sure as to the context of the original Arabic verse. Can anyone who knows Arabic here look into that for me?

If God tells you not to do something explicity (e.g fornication), and you, knowingly of the sin, can you argue that you didn't know that what you were doing was sinful in nature? Thus Clergymen who knowngliy sin and commit such illicit acts are not ignorant of the fact of their Sin. They know what they're doing. It is also nice to note that Jesus came and basically condemned the so called arrogant chief priests, and that God warns us of the so called clergy/priests who hoard money for themselves.

But even so, wouldn't those who in the end repent and submit be forgiven as God as specifically said in the Quran that he will forgive Shirk, Murder and Fornification if one repents and those big three are never something one does ignorantly.

So I finally figured out the solution and it is all listed on this site

                                      http//www.shiasource.com/al-mizan/self/tafsir-4-17-18/

The site is based on the work of a Shia scholar but he doesn't use the hadith to explain it (though he does keep the hadiths in a separate section for further additions so the main main in the end is pure Quranic explanation)

The basic ground realities must be kept in mind while trying to understand the meanings of words of a text.

The "Act"-Arabic "" cannot be done without their being prior knowledge saved in one's memory regarding that act, manner of its execution and the resultant effect of it.

Therefore can never mean "with ignorance-lack of knowledge".

Illicit sex can happen with regard to pious and knowledgeable people only when they are suddenly overpowered by emotions and passions.

Grand Qur'aan nowhere uses this word for ignorance, lack of knowledge, foolishness etc.

For Urdu readers, here is an article covering all occurrences of this word in the Qur'aan, vividly indicating its meanings and occassion of use.

                                          Hello brother,
What is the right understanding of this verse? They deleted it so I can not read the link.
                                          Peace
