Furthermore, I suggest David Filkin's Stephen Hawkings universe which will give you a good grounding on the subject.

As to what was before Big bang, since the universal laws did not apply as space and time did not exist, how can they be a before? It seems interesting indeed.

The authors propose a new and speculative solution to the problem of the initial singularity situated before the Big Bang (the point zero of the space - time). They combine mathematical and physical approachs and they find amazing results.

I will not say you the final result of their research, it is better and more interesting to read the book )
