Selam. The following verse seems to me to forbid poetry

Chapter 26 26224 And the poets, are followed by the strayers.

So if following poets is forbiden then what about musicians, singers or music in general. If so then I wonder why would Alah forbid it? I think its because of the conent of songs and poetry. Like intimacy between men and women should be private, not something to sing about.

    Comments!

    Thanks

The deviant follow the poets yes. I think this is about love-poetry. The sufis still do it today.

Music in itself is not forbidden, Prophet David was a musician.

Quran 3410 We bestowed Grace aforetime on David from ourselves "O ye Mountains!Sing ye back the Praises of God with him! and ye birds (also)! And We melted the iron for him;-
(Note the last expression is metaphoric as if even the metals themselves melted from the beauty of the praises of David)

If you look at groups like for instance Jesus Culture, it is clear that modern forms of worship, can be done in musical form.

It depends a lot on the mindset too. To me, music has always been a spiritual thing. Then again, I don`t listen to gangstarap, or low-moral music at all really. (Which unfortunately seems to be a lot of "popular" western music).

      Peace.

        Shalom,

Let us look at the ayaat in context of its surrounding and if possible, in context of the entire Qur'an.

26221 Shall I inform you on whom the devils come down?
26222 They come down on every sinful liar.
26223 They claim to listen, but most of them are liars.
26224 And the poets, are followed by the strayers.
26225 Do you not see that they traverse in every valley.
26226 And that what they say, is not what they do!
26227 Except for those who believe, and do good works, and remember God greatly, and were victorious after they were wronged. As for those who did wrong, they will know which fate they will meet.

Therefore, from what I understood of this verse, it isnt talking about poetry misleading people. In the last ayaat, God makes a distinction between them, "EXCEPT for those who..".

To me, another important thing comes up as I read the parts highlighted in red above. God is saying that these people are liars, hypocrites who follow poets. This reminds me of the following verse

6112 And as such, We have permitted the enemies of every prophet, mankind and Jinn devils , to inspire each other with fancy words in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.

So, to me it looks more like the kind of example given in 6112 goes very well with 26224. And ofcourse, after reading 6114, throwing your self at fancy talks (eg. Hadiths) is a sign of Hypocrisy.

Let me know what you think of it. God knows best.

        PEACE

          Shalom again,

You can compare the verses with chapter 103 for similar literature

          1031 By time.
1032 Man is indeed in loss.
1033 Except those who believe, and do good works, and support one another with the truth, and support one another with perseverance.

I hope you don't take it as verse 2 saying all of humanity is doomed no matter what .

          PEACE

            {32

Say, "Who prohibited the nice things GOD has created for His creatures, and the good provisions?" Say, "Such provisions are to be enjoyed in this life by those who believe. Moreover, the good provisions will be exclusively theirs on the Day of Resurrection." We thus explain the revelations for people who know.

Not sure if sha' ir means "poet", at least not as how we understand it in modern english. Why? Simple logic.

              A) Almost every reference to a "poet" is deemed as an insult . Why would being called a poet be insulting?
The disbelievers call the prophet a poet, crazy poet more than once, in hopes of disproving his claims. I think a poet, as quran defines it involves more than creating verses, it involves "belief" in some essence (6941).

              B) A lot of the quran is "poetic" , as in it rhymes in the arabic. Now , I'm aware that the quran is adamant in it being not poetry and muhammad not a poet, which further leads me to this conclusion.

I think part of it is about entertainment in general meaning something that takes your attention away from remembering ALLAH, time we could be reciting the Quran or praying, helping others, working to support our families and give in charity... this is only one reason why I think music, poetry, movies and such are thought of as bad. Poetry being followed could also be like following other religions and committing shirk since much poetry was religiously inspired and could amount to the same as following other gods and masters and such. And people can totally lose themselves in music and forget everything especially when alcohol and drugs become involved. It may be that music is a form of worship as it has been in many cultures around the world and would be considered worship even in today's pop culture as well especially with idolatry. What we focus on could be what we worship so we should be careful what we spend our time doing or "just passing time". Music can also be hypnotic or trance-like and we can be easily influenced or deceived while in this state of mind. This could make it easier for Shaytan to whisper to us and influence us by not remembering ALLAH. But these are only some reasons and may not be true at all. Movies, music, and poetry could also help us remember Allah if it was made with that intention and listened with that intention. good question... I have thought of it myself many times since I spent 20 years as a musician. These are just my opinions only.

                  Salaam peace

I think music and poetry are not forbidden, of course the content and subject on music and poetry is very important.. im sure 100% that Universe wasnt crated in silence..

Now IE- we have in one hand the hadiths wich in a poetry content way is very untolerant, maxist and descrimnates people from other..
in other hand youve got some Rumi poettry? wich of these 2 lectures will cause you the atrophy and barrier the self search for knowledge?

other exemple I come to know and learn more about Islam from old Alandalusi poettry (i come from Portugal and history in classes are totally changed and manipulated) and from hiphop conscious artists(not speaking of Mtv 50centes or gangsteria) i mean how long will i take to read AlQuran if i dind heard about it?

So thanks to music and old Poetry i read the Quran for first time, im the first of my family and from my friends circle to become muslim.. and belive me from the background were i come from, is not easy to become a Muslim.. so Everything depends on the subject, the knowledge within, and poettry like music are not above the Quran but are tools to selfknowledge and to organize your mind.. its all about intention and final result..

When i write some poetry i dont write for others to read, i write for myself...its individual and internal feeling
When i make music or play any musical instrument, musical notes are mathemathical and can teach you many things( its an internal feeling )
In ExempeBrother Paradox Uncreated is a nice trancemusic producer, i bet many people will feel bad listening it..but many others(like me) will have the opened preception to undersand the "musical/instrumental" content..so sometimes its also the perception of each individual creature..
the Wahabis dont want music because they just know how to play 1 string or 2... but they forget per exemple AlKindi?(wich is one of the best old composers of arab world) they forget they invented the lute, alOude and other instruments..

Acording to Quran we need to be carefull with the whisperer fake shcollars, ladygagas , etc

Thats my personal point of view, right or wrong unleast im not hurting, exploding bombs, exploring or deviating anyone.

I think it is speaking of the forms of communication that appeals to pure emotion. That kind of poetry pulls at the emotions and does not encourage a person to think about truth. While the Quran is poetic, and can pull at the emotions, it is still focused on truth. Some forms of poetry are only focused on aesthetics, cadence, emotional response, etc.
