I thought I should provide this video lecture. In it Aisha Musa talks about how Al Shafi talked about the Koranist of the past in the same manner as Sunnis talk about them today. Its a very old debate within Islam.

Imam al-shafi is fit to be called an asshole. He is one of the major inventers of hadith as he himself wrote many of the hadith himself and lied to people by attributing his own words to the prophet.

AND WOE TO THOSE WHO WRITE THE BOOK WITH THEIR OWN HANDS AND THAN SAY 'THIS IS FROM GOD' WHEN IT IS NOT, IN ORDER TO GAIN A LITTLE BENEFIT (QURAN)

Mohammeds behaviour was exemplary, yes. But this exemplary behaviour is not in the hadith. So the hadith associates a (made-up/rumoured) shaytan with this exemplary behaviour.

Are they then unaware that Allah knoweth that which they keep hidden and that which they proclaim? Among them are unlettered folk who know the Scripture not except from hearsay. They but guess. Therefore woe be unto those who write the Scripture with their hands and then say, "This is from Allah," that they may purchase a small gain therewith. Woe unto them for that their hands have written, and woe unto them for that they earn thereby. S. 277-79 Pickthal

So true. Hadith are the work of Satan hence following hadith are following Satan.
