So someone raised a point with me today, about how if I feel scholars are not to be trusted, then how am I to read the Qur'an? As the translations were done by scholars and thus by reading the translation I was really taking the teachings of a scholar and being influenced by his interpretations.

I thought it was a reasonably valid point, that left me thinking that then it seems the only way to avoid the influences of a scholar would be to study arabic myself, which raised yet another question that is, seeing as studying arabic is the only method of reading the Quran, doesn't this suggest a superiority of the arabic language?

As someone who never leaves any doubts in his faith I was hoping people could share their thoughts on the matter.
-translations lead to corruption by scholars
-only through studying arabic can we read the Quran, this seems to suggest arabic is a superior language

      Salam brother
that's a good point. However, today we have a lot of different translations, you can compare so that one arrives the original even closer.you will find also a lot of tafsir, not only from traditionel scholars. Each revelation was revealed in the language of the people who had reached it first. All the ancient scriptures require to study the old language if they want to be understand better and closer. This not means that Arabic is a sacred language.
The vocabulary, which has been used in the Koran, is only a small part of the whole arabic language. Theoretically, this would be enoughthe vocabulary plus grammar. This can be done.

        Greetings and Peace, all group

It helps to use multiple translations. No single translation, FM translation included, is without error.

It also helps to cross reference words in AQ. I use http//corpus.quran.com/ a lot, but it is not the only resource.

When one word is presented (metaphors excluded) as having different meanings in different places, the translation is suspect.

AQ is strictly speaking not necessary. Did Abraham (Peace upon all Prophets) have it?

4125 And who is better in the system than the one who submits himself to GOD, and he is a good doer, and he follows the creed of Abraham in monotheism? And GOD took Abraham as a friend.

1736 And do not uphold what you have no knowledge of. For the hearing, eyesight, and heart, all these you are responsible for.

        However

22 This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guidance for the righteous.

If one suspects that a translation is wrong, it should not be ignored. One wouldn't choose to eat food that shows signs of being unsafe. If something in a translation of AQ appears to abrogate or contradict or be false, an error must be involved.

When such things are discussed openly, many persons may glean useful knowledge from the discourse, ISA.

        ALLAH knows best.

            peace,

            what about free-minds.org Quran translation?

It is not error free. Maybe it has fewer errors (than many other translations) and the authors strived with honesty--but it still has errors. Indeed, every so often it is updated (changed). The FM translation has great merits, but it is dangerous to take as a totally correct/transparent translation.

Fwiw I've found the translation to be a beautiful rendition in English, with only a few spots where he takes the traditional interpretation of a term or idea. I supplement that with the FM translation
