is swimming allowed?

Hello everybody,
I,m new here on the forum and i have a burning question. I,m muslim sinds 1998 and i,m european married with a muslim man.
He forbids me to swim. And it hurts me and killing me. Living in a country where the weather is always good and the beaches beautiful.
Is it allowed to swim? And can a husband forbids his wife to do so?Greetings Jol

Salam Alaikum jol, I have the same problem lol. Except he doesnt like me swimming in our complex only, because his friends all live in the same area, and he doesnt want them to "see" me. lol. Other than that, if I can find another swimming pool, perhaps women only, or where none of is friends are sure to be, he doesnt mind.
Not sure if its allowed islamically, I would hope so, cuz I love to swim. -
Peace,
The minimum dress code requirement for men and women is to cover the 'private areas'. Women are then also 'recomended' to wear full garments if they are to be harmed from they way they dress.
If the setting is a pool or beach, then wearing the minimum is acceptable and does not bring harm to the woman.

Peace Mazzy, Layth, jol

how do you mean harmed? and how do you mean recommended? I thought anything in the quran, except otherwise stated was compulsory?
enlighten me please ? ! no sarcasm intended

Salaam jol,
Welcome to the forum. )
And can a husband forbids his wife to do so?
I don't think so... God does the forbidding. If your husband's doesn't like it, then you may accept out of respect, but then that doesn't have anything to do with your salvation or guidance according to God's way.
Peace

Thx all of you for your reactions. The point is that i cannot talk with my husband about this. Subject is closed for him. In the past it gave us a lot of fights. Strange also that i hear here that it can be allowed while other islamic sites forbids it.
O, how i wish he could see it like me. I feel logically that there is no harm in it. Unfortunally he sees it as 'haram'. Hope that someday they will open a womensbeach or something like that.Greetings Jol

peace All,
I'm not sure if it would be allowed. As far as I'm aware the dresscode guidelines for women are
- cover your private parts
- cover your bosom
- lengthen your garments (3359 is on about being in public, and I would assume if one went swimming they would be in public)
- do not reveal your body shape via movement of the hips (I'm quite confident a bathing suit would be tight and show body shape rather easily)
As for your husband being able to forbid something, no, although he is allowed to direct you to what is best (as we all are).
As a compromise, you could attend a female only swimming session at your local swimming centre. They have them over here.

Salam jol,
i think that in clubs like elshams and heliopolis offer swimming days for women only. I can understand your husband, even if i don't agree with him. I am also egyptian and I know that egyptian people generally are not polite at all when they stare and look especially atforeigners. Its a sad reality
(I'm quite confident a bathing suit would be tight and show body shape rather easily)
not all bathings suits wakas. There are suits, which don't reveal anything and i see also no reason, why in international stores only tight suits are being sold. Where is the problem to design such suits?
Best regards

Hi Jol,
I read your first post and I couldn't figure out why exactly you were upset. Was it because your husband had allowed himself to force you to follow his word, or was it because you felt/feel entitled to obey it. Or was it because you love swimming so much yet you cannot find the right means to do it, considering the circumstances.
I am surprised of Layth's reply. He mentioned ?private parts?! I really don?t know what exactly is that since every part of our bodies, except the face and hands, is private and nobody has the right to share it with us except the very few, conditioned of course to who, what, when and why.
So what has a stranger got to do with a woman?s thighs, for example? Your husband does not want to share your private property, your body, with other men, naturally. He knows that men are always attracted to woman, especially women with swim suits, something like the ?Bay Watch? thing. Is there any man, who is not legally blind, that doesn?t like that show? And I am sure that you too would mind it, to see other women staring at your husband?s body even if he is discreetly dressed.
Well, anyway Jol, I think there is a way to negotiate this matter with your husband. There are swim suits, ?SPEEDO?, which cover the whole body. They are not diving suits, they just look like them. They are made of a water-proof stretch material. You can order them on the Internet. They are really great if one can fit in them! They are so tightly made one cannot even breathe. They are made so tightly to help swimmers cruise like a bullet. You can actually see some swimmers wearing them in the Water Olympics. There are other brands which are affordable and easier to squeeze our curves into and still be able to breathe ) . You can look for them in any sportswear shop near you. They are available in my country and should be available in any other Muslim country. We also happen to have a private beach that is strictly for women. Problem is that Jeddah?s shores are highly polluted, even the air around it is too polluted to breathe. So no more walks around our beaches, or that is what I was sincerely advised. That gives us the choice of swimming in private swimming pools. I wonder if you have that choice.Best luck!

Salaam Wakas
Unfortunately what I see, is that potentiality does fluctuate in enviroments and therefore one cannot truly conclude, or suggest that one enviroment is potentially more beneficial or safe. In women-only enviroments there can be acts of aggression and lewdness as well as homosexuality. Rape, sexual abuse and aggression are plausible. Though I'm not sure where a relaxation of the dresscode is allowed in a women-only enviroment in alquran. I'm not quite sure what harm 3359 may hint at, if any, but it seems to relate to me that women are to have no relaxation of the dresscode in public arenas.
Taj,
Taj, yea, my pic is there, but still all of my body is mine own privy.

Do you know any sites, which sell these "olympic" swimming suites?

Hi all,
Anybody come across the ?best? dress code?
(7.26) O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of GOD's signs, that they may take heed.
God?s words not so important, or when ?best? is mentioned, should we believe that?
Best regards

Salams Sabo, how are you?
Do you know any sites, which sell these "olympic" swimming suites?
I certainly do. You too can find them by simply searching Yahoo under "full coverage swim suits". You should be able to find plenty. Unfortunately for me, I cannot have an access to them here because those website are blocked in my country. But if they are not so in yours, then you sure won't find any difficulty to browse and find something that suits your woman )
I saw the full "SPEEDO" abroad, in their own shop"SPEEDO". I have also seen many here, locally, and bought many as well. They are not "SPEEDO" though. Maybe they are available at men's sportswear shops, but since I never go there, I have no idea.
The full coverage are for the sea, but in private swimming pool I personally use those with elbow-long sleeve and knee-high legs, so do the rest of the women in the women-only health club?s swimming pool. Women here don?t feel comfortable any other way.
Thanks for asking )

Salams Sabo,
I'm very fine, thank you
I missed you too. When the forum "broke down" on April I got busy with my "reality" life! But now it seems that I've got bugged with this forum's virus yet again winkOh bad, what's wrong with such sites? Are they considered from the royal government as porno sites?
Well, you guessed it cry
But honestly, it is not a bad idea to block "certain" sites, I am sure, but the bad thing is that even the innocent ones get blocked on the wayTaj
