    Salaam,

I am currently considering the question of marriage. I didn't much have time to look for references about it in the Qu'ran.
My question is what does make a man and a woman a "married couple" ?
Is there any specific ceremony involved? Or is a mutual consent to live together for the rest of their lives enough? Does it have to do with making the union "known" in public?
Any knowledge of the matter would be appreciated. Quotes from the Qu'ran would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

      Salaam

As far as I am aware a wedding must be made public knowledge and yet there is room for any kind of special ceremonies you would like to observe.

        Thank you,

Here, in France, a wedding is an administrative thing. You go to the city hall with your familly and friends and sign some paper. French muslems (most of them from north africa) like to have a big party with expensive food and all kind of things.
I think the french administrative thing is enough then to make the thing public knowledge, and the traditional party is unnecessary?

Thank you again for your answer.

          Salam fellow searchers,

this is my first "contribution" and already it is not so great, because I'm unable to quote the correct sura+verse.
          oops
But if you look for marriage in the coran index, you'll find it anyway.
It says that you can keep the engagement to the women public or private...but do'nt consumate marriage if the woman didn't finish her interim. Gods knows what you think about the women...aso.
It's placed right after a verse about marrying widows. That just to say that marriage needn't be official. Anyway, as coran always says, what is important is your rightousness and your real intentions. I understand that as having a commitment to someone and keeping to it, out of respect to yourself as well as this person. Even if you are not "officially" married, abusing the trust of this person by having intercourse with someone else, would be "adultery" or zina to me.

A muslim marriage in the light of Quran

Bride and groom must like each other before they get together as husband and wife. Giving away the wedding gifts to the would be wife as much as you can is mandatory in such a way she is secured in life, which Allah instruts as 'Mahr'. Once the Mahr is accepted by the bride to be, she becomes his lawful wife. Allah alone shall be the witness to the union of hearts in this marriage, for only allah knows what you conceal in your breasts and what you openly do. None else needs to know about your marriage according to Quran, Ceremony is absolutely unwarranted. This is Quran.

Between bride and groom only Allah is the witness, if you fear HIM. For the sake of administrative set up, later you can reveal your union accordingly. But this is worldly and out side of Quran.

                Peace be upon you,

The "ceremony" is manmade, the union betweeen a man and wife is witnessed by the God. The "ceremony" can be whatever you like it to be. That is my humble understanding.

Hey, I know this is a bit late but I like having verses listed after every thing is said. Can someone please list the verses which helped them come to the conclusion that a marriage does not need to be know publicly? Or how they?ve come to the conclusion on how marriage works.

Does the Quran not make any mention of the wedding feast ('Walimah')?

So if I understood it correctly; a marriage has to be known in public.
Does that mean that every relationship you have and is made public is a "marriage"?

                      Short example
Tim is in love with Janet, Janet is in love with Tim. In a couple of days Tim got to know Janet's friends and family and so did Janet with Tim's acquantainces.

Does that example pass as a marriage according to the Koran?

                        Salaam,

I believe marraige is completed in the act of sex. There are different conditions in how to go about it. One need not get involved with the parents at all.

423 - Prohibited for you (in marriage)... the daughters of your wives with whom you .have consummated the marriage- if the marriage has not .been consummated, you may marry the daughter.

Consummated? On paper or a verbal agreement?

I'm curious about how 'marriage' is ended up being an agreement on a piece of paper.

One can write the marital contract (AAuqdata alnnikah 2135) without consummating the union/marriage (intimate relations) .

In 423, the expression dhakhala biha which means word for word he enters with her, in other word they consumme their marriage. It is known that "dukhla" as the first night of the marriage .

2236-237 clarifies what is said in 423.

2236 And, there is no blame on you if you nullify the marriage before you have touched the women with whom you have signed the marital contract, and before you have appointed the marital gift. This would be an unexpected situation involving emotional trauma. Therefore, show compassion by giving her as generous a gift as you can afford. This would be an act of equity and it is a binding duty on all those who wish to be counted among the benefactors of humanity.

2237 And if unexpected circumstances lead you to divorce women before you have touched them, but after the marital gift has been fixed, give them half the amount unless they volunteer to forgo it. If the move for divorce originates purely from you, let her have the whole portion. If you men forgo it, it is closer to righteousness. O People! Never forget kindness among yourselves. This Command is from Allah Whose Law of Requital ever monitors your actions and the motives behind them.

I think a serious relationship is viewed as a marriage. Perhaps the consumation is "dowry" which I still do not truly understand or it is commiting it to writing with witnesses. The God tells us elsewhere to put deals in writing.

This is one of the best versions sung by my favorite Yossi Azulay!!!

It is a song "boi bshalom" = "come in peace"...

And the God is always the very first mentioned!

I've seen many weddings but this one is simply BEAUTIFUL in its poised elegance and religiosity with this marvelous voice flying over the invited guests...
