Apostasy

According to accepted history, apostasy had begun in the lifetime of Muhammad, and the first major action of the apostasy was fought and concluded while Muhammad still lived."The first major event of the apostasy occurred in Yemen and is known as the Incident of Aswad Al Ansi, who was killed on May 30, 632 (the 6th of Rabi-ul-Awwal, 11 Hijri) by a Persian Muslim governor of Yemen named Firoz. The news of his assassination reached Medina shortly after the death of Muhammad. The chief cause of the apostasy was lack of firm Islamic faith.
The apostasy had become so general that it affected every tribe in Arabia with the exception of the people in Mecca and Medina, the tribe of Thaqeef in Taif, and the Azd of Oman. In some cases the entire tribe apostatised. Some withheld the zakat, the alms tax, though they did not otherwise challenge Islam. Many tribal leaders made claims to prophethood, some like Musaylima made it during the lifetime of Muhammad. The tribes claimed that they had submitted to Muhammad and that with Muhammad's death, their allegiance was ended. Abu Bakr insisted that they had not just submitted to a leader but joined the Muslim community, of which he was the new head. Apostasy is a capital offense under traditional interpretations of Islamic law, and Abu Bakr declared war on the rebels" Wikipedia
If God states in Quran that there is to be no compulsion in religion, then can this information be correct? Would Muhammed, Abu Bakr and the other companions go against God's word and kill those who decided they didn't want to be Muslims any more? Were the Apostasy wars aggressive or defensive wars? Were they wars to maintain an Islamic Empire?
Also please can someone clarify - did God tell Ibrahim to leave Iraq, invade another country (Palestine), and attack it's inhabitants (Canaanites and other indigenous groups) who were trying to defend their territory against these invaders? Is there a justification given that it was ok because they were pagans?

The no compulsion verse is statimg a fact. It does not mean God agrees or not. Like most people are unbelievers verse, it does not mean that God approves. Or most people are astray verse etc. EWhat we need to look at is what God ordered the prophet in the Koran
1682 But if they turn away from you, your only duty is a clear delivery of the Message .
6107 Yet if God had so willed, they would not have ascribed Divinity to aught besides Him; hence, We have not made you their keeper, nor are you a guardian over them.
479-80 Say'Whatever good betides you is from God and whatever evil betides you is from your own self and that We have sent you to mankind only as a messenger and all sufficing is God as witness. Whoso obeys the Messenger, he indeed obeys God. A nd for those who turn away, We have not sent you as a keeper."
1753-54 And tell my servants that they should speak in a most kindly manner. Verily, Satan is always ready to stir up discord between men; for verily; Satan is mans foe .... Hence, We have not sent you with power to determine their Faith.
21107-109 (O Prophet?) 'We have not sent you except to be a mercy to all mankind" Declare, "Verily, what is revealed to me is this, your God is the only One God, so is it not up to you to bow down to Him?' But if they turn away then say, "I have delivered the Truth in a manner clear to one and all, and I know not whether the promised hour is near or far."
2267 To every people have We appointed ceremonial rites which they observe; therefore, let them not wrangle over this matter with you, but bid them to turn to your Lord. You indeed are rightly guided. But if they still dispute you in this matter, `God best knows what you do."

6412 Obey God then and obey the Messenger, but if you turn away (no blame shall attach to our Messenger), for the duty of Our Messenger is just to deliver the message.

What happened to No compulsion in Religion 2256, and Believe in it or don't believe in it 17107
and God is in no need if you turn an apostate, he could just substitute others beside you 554...O you who believe, if you revert from your religion, God will substitute people in your place--people whom He loves and who love Him. They will be kind with the believers, stern with the disbelievers, and will strive in the cause of God without fear of any blame. Such is God's blessing; He bestows it upon whomever He wills. God is Bounteous, Omniscient. (554)

According to accepted history, apostasy had begun in the lifetime of Muhammad, and the first major action of the apostasy was fought and concluded while Muhammad still lived.Define 'apostasy' thus we'll be at the same page on this topic..
What you describe is a 'rebellion'.. or should I say 'freedom movement' (dependent on which angle)"The first major event of the apostasy occurred in Yemen and is known as the Incident of Aswad Al Ansi, who was killed on May 30, 632 (the 6th of Rabi-ul-Awwal, 11 Hijri) by a Persian Muslim governor of Yemen named Firoz. The beginning and the end of the sentence doesn't really connected.. a guy murder another guy.. the cause "a lack of islamic faith" ??????

In some cases the entire tribe apostatised. Some withheld the zakat, the alms tax, though they did not otherwise challenge Islam.
So islam is a political entity ??? Thus it's authority can be challenged???
If God states in Quran that there is to be no compulsion in religion, then can this information be correct? Would Muhammed, Abu Bakr and the other companions go against God's word and kill those who decided they didn't want to be Muslims any more? Were the Apostasy wars aggressive or defensive wars? There are no 'religion' in the Quran, Quran is not a book about religion..
The whole conception of "Religion" doesn't exist in the Quran..
La Ikraha Fi Al Dien.. Qod tabayanna al rushdu mina al-ghoyi..There are no compulsion in opinion/belief/attitude (towards something) as truth stands out clear from error..
Also please can someone clarify - did God tell Ibrahim to leave Iraq, invade another country (Palestine), and attack it's inhabitants (Canaanites and other indigenous groups) who were trying to defend their territory against these invaders? Is there a justification given that it was ok because they were pagans?
Abraham lead an invasion to Palestine???
That's something new.....
I believe that's story is also another fantasy...Salam / Peace

Abandoning or renouncing your former religion.

Yes a Muslim killing someone because of a lack of Islamic faith doesn't make sense if he is a true Muslim therefore how could Muhammed and his companions kill people because they renounced Islam (during the Wars of Apostasy)when God tells us in Quran that killing is only permitted in self defence.

Canaan was the blessed land promised to Abraham by God (Quran 2171). What do you think happened to the indigenous people when Abraham arrived there with his followers to claim the land promised to him and his descendants ? How did the Israelites take over and control the land that belonged to the Canaanites?
Wakas, Bigmo and Mr Q my apologies for not reposting your comments - I am not very computer savvy and haven't worked out how to do that (how do you get the blue background shading???)
Your posting doesn't really address the issue I raised. My point was how can a true Muslim who follows Quran aggress against and kill others just because they decide not to be Muslim any more? How could it be possible that Mohamed' and his followers could even fight apostasy wars if they were adhering to the verses you have posted from Quran? Similarly with Ali and Aisha, who were direct companions of the Prophet, how could they go against God's words in Quran and fight each other? Civil wars broke out amongst the Ummah as soon as Muhammed died. How could that happen if they were all following the True Islam?

Peace Lena.
.
Let us assume one group stayed with the truth and another group deviated. The group that deviated attacked the one that stayed loyal.A civil war will start. Can the group who defend themselves be in the wrong?
I am not claiming that is what happened after the death of the prophet. To me that is irrelevant. History is full of man-made stories and legends and lies ... Thanks to the Lord for preserving HIS scripture for us. That is the most important thing from that era.
I was only making a small point.

PeaceGood point. I think Lena believed in many of those stories and wanted to know how can this be given the verses of the Quran that goes against what many of these strories claim the prophet and his followers done. However we need to remember many of the hadiths conflict with one another. There are amny conflicting reports. The Sunnis and Shias have very different understanding and historic accounts about the companions. They have the same legalism, but differ in historic accounts about the companions. They are in the end both rival Meccan clans fighting over power. Its one of the ironies of Islamic history is the Meccans who were the enemies of Islam ended up being its rulers. All this because they carried the Muhamedan geneology and many Muslims respected them just for that. Middle eastern societies tend to be tribal and many saw the Muhamedan tribe (Qureish) as the most noble. The Quran however makes it known to us that many Meccans were against Muhamedan and only entered Islam after military defeat and opportunism.
Another interesting story is the Ridda war (apostasy war) of Abu Bakr. The stories claim he ordered to fight some tribes who would not pay him the Zakat. Yet the Koran always made charity and paying of zakat an individual affair. It tells us those who are stingy are being stingy on themselves and that God is self sufficient. This gave the rulers of Islamic Empires the opportunity to impose zakat and jizya on their populations. Many of these hadiths came to give the rulers more power. Any authority given to Muhamed and his companions can now be transferred to the rulers of Islam by default. One of the goals of the Sunnah was to elevate Muhamed's authority and then transfer that authority to the Muslim ruler.

They mixed and mingled with the Canaanites?
Besides Abraham didn't 'invade' , he migrated... just like the Gypsies...
Did you ever heard of the Gypsies invade Europe with troops and weapon???

It's called protecting the turf.. and they usually label / demonizing their political enemy in any ways that they see fit...
How could it be possible that Mohamed' and his followers could even fight apostasy wars if they were adhering to the verses you have posted from Quran?
Perhaps Muhammad didn't.. the so-called "his followers" is another story... it seems "his followers" bash each other heads for power... as usual... up until now..

Yes, I know that what comes down to us is usually the victors version of events that happened and hadeeths cannot be relied on to give an accurate detailed picture of what was happening at that time. I am not just believing all the stories, however there is such a thing as historical fact based on evidence from differing sources. The Battle of the Camels and Apostasy Wars were actual documented events that took place. The Quran however makes it known to us that many Meccans were against Muhamedan and only entered Islam after military defeat
Does that mean they were forced to accept Islam? I just find it quite shocking that people such as Abu Bakr, Aisha, Umar, Ali, who were such esteemed Muslims, let power and clan politics dominate over Quranic principles and ended up fighting each other IMMEDIATELY after the prophets death (this fighting is not in dispute just who started it and why) despite the knowledge they had of True Islam (and this fighting and division has continued ever since!), despite that they were all Submitters to the one God, is that the devil's work or what???Besides Abraham didn't 'invade' , he migrated... just like the Gypsies...
Did you ever heard of the Gypsies invade Europe with troops and weapon???
I never heard of Abraham leading an army of invasion..I accept your point that Abraham and followers could have been just a migrant, who intermingled with and was accepted by the indigenous "pagan" people, but as God tells us in Quran, he was so against paganism that he broke all the idols in the Kaaba, so this does not seem to me to be a very likely scenario. Semitic tribes at that time were involved in constant skirmishes and warfare, invading territory and defending territory (what's new )), where as the Gypsies are a scattered people who were ejected from their homeland and then were eventually given free and unhindered access to all Christian countries by Pope Martin V.
My understanding of Quran 2 58 - 59 is that some of Moses followers attacked the local people and were punished by God.
On reflection, I agree that it seems unlikely that the Prophets of God would aggress, but their followers are a different story.I totally agree that it is the message and our own growth as True Muslims that we need to focus on. My reasons for studying the history surrounding Abraham, Moses, Mohamed and Islam in general, is that God tells us in Quran that it is important to look back at history and see what has happened to previous communities as a way of learning about what is right and wrong. And as George Santayana, in Reason in Common Sense, The Life of Reason, Vol.1, wrote "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"
-
I accept your point that Abraham and followers could have been just a migrant, who intermingled with and was accepted by the indigenous "pagan" people, but as God tells us in Quran,
Pagan terminology doesn't exist until Xtians came along...
Abraham did intermingled and accepted by the Canaanites... which was neither jews or arabs or palestinians..
Again during Abraham time the term Jews/Judea/Palestine is not yet exist.
And most probably Canaan during his time was still a sparsely populated area...The Quran leaves a hint that Abraham did open up some sort of a 'free hotel' for passerby.. especially on the story of 'angels came by and didn't touch any food' which are on their way to Lot's city..
he was so against paganism that he broke all the idols in the Kaaba, so this does not seem to me to be a very likely scenario.
In Kabaa as in Mecca ???? Abraham was a Babylonian... somewhere in today's southern Iraq..
Most definitely Abraham's sons and daughters did intermarried with the locals / canaanites. And he did have a son through an Egyptian or Midians, and those mixing of DNAs resulted in many new 'social identities'.
This is the common pattern anywhere.. on any people...
Another common pattern is that some people usually try to 'author' their version of history to show 'how their group is superior to other group'.. a narcissistic nature of homo sapiens.
Thus we can see the story especially in the Tanakh how 'the jews was the true descendant of Abraham because they didn't intermarried with the Goyim/Pagan'... which most definitely not true..
The evidence can be seen in Today's Jewry.. (Although the term itself is debatable)..
An ethiopian jew looks like ethiopian, a russian jew looks like russians, a german jew looks like germans, a chinese jew looks like chinese a burmese jew looks like burmese etc...
So much for the "God chosen people racial purity" isn't it? )))And we can see the common pattern in the (so called) "Arab's world".. how a group of people claimed they're more superior than others because they have a 'pure ancestor line to Muhammad'....
Which of course not true either...Last but not least... "Race" just like "Religion" is a social identity.. scientifically "Race" doesn't exist...
A Jew are those who claimed to be a jew... An Arab are those who claimed to be Arabs, A chinese are those who claimed to be Chinese, An Indians are those who claimed to be Indians etc...
Semitic tribes at that time were involved in constant skirmishes and warfare, invading territory and defending territory (what's new )),
And the situation remains very much the same up until now isn't it??

It appreciate the posts on this topic. It's my first time to start studyng Islamic history relating to the Muslim caliphs and caliphates from the time of Muhammed's death until the end of the Ottoman Empire. The constant fighting both within the Ummah and without and the short periods of time that most caliphs were in power (many for only 2-5 years) was a surprise to me.Pagan terminology doesn't exist until Xtians came along
Sorry Jafar - yes, my mistake - I see "kafir" usually means unbeliever or infidel and not pagan. -
Peace Lena.
There nothing wrong in wanting to find out what happened.Studying history is fine The problem is verifying what is true fact and what is made up. Even facts cannot be trusted. That is the reason GOD preserves HIS words.
GOD has explained what happened since the beginning
( In the beginning? How long ago? Was there religion since the start of mankind?)2213 (At the start) The people used to be one community, when GOD sent the prophets/ messengers as bearers of good news as well as warners. HE sent down with them a scripture ( The word of GOD only!) bearing the truth ( submission to HIM and total loyalty.) to judge among them in their disputes ( to correct those who have deviated from the truth). Ironically those who received that scripture ( and deviated) were the ones who rejected any new scripture ( that is meant to correct them) despite clear proofs (that it is from GOD) given to them. This is due to jealousy and division ( and arrogance. This often leads to sects/ factions and wars). GOD guides those who believe ( submit and are loyal) to the truth that is disputed by all others ( all the other religions), in accordance with his will"
2253 These prophets/ messengers; (that GOD has been sending) We blessed some of them more than others .( it is up to GOD) For example one was spoken to ( by GOD), and We raised some of them to higher ranks. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, profound miracles, and supported him with the Holy Spirit. Had GOD willed, their followers would not have fought with each other, after the clear proofs have come to them. Instead, they disputed among themselves; Some of them believed ( submitted and stayed loyal to GOD) and some disbelieved. ( and took on other gods/ idols- prophets as idols and prosecuted the believers.) Had GOD willed they would not have disputed. ( But HE tests the loyalty of everyone) Everything is in accordance with the will of GOD.?
This life is a loyalty test for all humans. We have the freedom of choice. We make our own decisions. Unfortunately those who do not really believe make the wrong decisions. However GOD is in complete control. GOD also explains what happens to those who make the wrong choice
1331Even if a Koran ( or any scripture from GOD) caused mountains to move or the earth to tear asunder. or the dead to speak. ( The majority of people will not believe in it!) Those who believe will need to realise that if GOD willed, HE could have guided all the people.( But every individual needs to make that decision by himself/herself, GOD will not force you to believe; Even though) GOD controls all things. The disbelievers ( and idol worshippers) will continue to suffer disasters as a consequence of their own works. ( and bad decisions! If you do not want GOD -your creator- to be part of your life, do not blame HIM for your disasters!) Or have disasters strike close to them. ( because of what others, close to them ,are doing- the decisions they are taking-) Until GOD s promise is fulfilled. GOD will never change the predetermined destiny.( Every human( Except few?) is allowed a lifetime- Short or long- to make their own decision!)
GOD also tries the believers and tests people against each other to bring out their true convictions.
Peace

I believer they left Islam and then raided Muslim villages and caravans, and would then join Islam again to avoid attack, and then leave and attack. In which case war against them is acceptable. They were essentially terrorists.

Well if that's the case.. then it's a robbery case.. and it has nothing to do with "leaving Islam"..
A robber is a robber is a robber...BUT...
Why the 'author of the (his) story' put an 'apostasy' twist as addition?
Is there any 'specific reason' on doing such? a specific motive perhaps?Salam / Peace

Last but not least...
And the situation remains very much the same up until now isn't it??

Salaam.
What you are describing is nationality and not race/ethnicity which is evident by looking around you with the diversity of humans and is/was a part of Allah's plan in creating different races/ethnicity as per 4913. Nothing wrong in identifying yourself with a certain race/ethnicity within limits set by the Quran but nationalism is a ideological cancer for humans that needs eradicating.
Those in control aka elite promote nationalism to keep the majority in control and create the illusion of us vs them.

Of course there's nothing wrong in identifying yourselves with certain 'social identity' whatever that is... including 'nationality'.. (I'm a South Korean and not North Korean, I'm a Taiwanese and not Chinese).. as long as you're not 'getting carried away with it'.. and putting a bad stereotype on people which claimed different 'social identity' than yours.. (There's a tsunami! It must be due to the work of the jews!! There's an economic crisis! This is all because of the Jews!"
