Lately, I have been experiencing a lot of negative thinking. I have tried distracting myself by engaging in activities I like but that relieved me temporarily. Just wanted to know how you guys overcome negativity and I could use some of your advice )

Pray and ask God for help- talk to God about my problems and pray for guidance.
      Reflect on my blessings
Skype a friend or family member - just hearing their voice usually makes me feel a better except if they are down too and then you can feel more negative than before you called lol!!
Read a good book, watch Family Guy or The Simpsons on TV, watch a good movie, listen to some inspiring music.
AND it's really important to do something physical - EXERCISE gets rid of negative toxins.

One way I have found is to simply remove negative stimuli. Out of sight, out of mind. I was surprised, as I became more mindful that I was subconsciously seeking out a lot of negative situations on purpose. Out of habit, out of familiarity, etc. Some people in your life build you up, others will drag you down whether they intend to or not. So let go of them and you will find yourself rising.

However the best way is to lose the power afforded to your mind. This site explains the process in great detail. Have a read through. Essentially, all your thoughts are like plants or seedlings and every time you give attention to them it is like shining light on them and making them grow.

Doing this to negative thoughts makes them grip you harder and this means you will focus even harder on them every day. So the only way is to relax your mind and let these thoughts wash through you. I have been practicing this in my meditations for a couple of months and have seen incredible results. One of the main annoyances with negative thoughts is that it feels like you have to think them and without being deliberately mindful you don't even notice this feeling. You don't even notice that you are basically addicted to thinking & feeling negative. It's like when you're thirsty and automatically drink some water without even noticing. But unlike water, you don't HAVE to think negatively. And realising this feels like the biggest weight off your shoulders, it is so amazing. Hope this helps! And please do read the link, there is so much amazing wisdom on that site.

The #1 thing is basically, gratitude. The more you look out around the world and find things to be thankful to God for, the more these thoughts will dissolve away. It might take days, weeks, months or years but practice this. Do it deliberately and over time it will become you. Gratitude to God is the most powerful acid burning away the shackles of negativity. As you rise in gratitude, the ungrateful cease to have power over you. Higher vibration sees through lower vibration. Everything suddenly becomes harmonious, life feels magical. Do this daily and I don't mean read this and think "yeah I'll do it" then forget. This is not a 'feel good phrase on a pretty background with trees, ocean and girl holding a butterfly.jpeg", this is LIFE. Make this the EXCLUSIVE object of your life. God shows you more and more, the more genuinely grateful you are. It's like Alice jumping into the rabbit hole, it is psychedelic.

This describes my mental state accurately. I know that I have certain thoughts that bother me, but instead of trying to ignore them, I just seem to look for another negative stimulus. It's an obsession as you stated ( I am desperately in need for relaxation!!

              Hi Loveislam,

I am myself going through a lot of negativity and it creates a lot of confusion and wild thought take over, making you feel depressive. I used to enjoy movies a lot so when i see a movie I feel better, but this can't be a solution. Lots of advices about being positive went futile.

The best way is to have some good sound sleep & wake up fresh and do things which interest you, concentrating on job etc.

See lesser privileged souls and be thankful to Allah and be happy with what you have. This makes you feel positive.

              Regards

                Salam loveislam,

as i always say, i would usually introspect and ask myself, is my belief and assumptions correct..
and adjust and wait and see..
if things turn out for the better, then i have made the right assumptions..
otherwise i will reevaluate other options..
if i exhaust my options then i would ask Allah SWT to have mercy on me and to relieve me from my ignorance..
at the same time i will try to seek all possible way of interpreting this life from AQ pov, so i would never question AQ..
                and I hope i don't have to..

                peace

depends on the negative thoughts - what they are and why you are having them. what's the cause or source?

ok - if negative thoughts about God enters my mind. why am i having them? why do i feel the way i do? what is the source? the cause? for me, ignoring or distracting or putting negative thoughts away doesn't get rid of the negative thoughts. they need to be dealt with head on. the way for me to conquer them is to understand the negative thoughts.

people only take you down if you give them permission to take you down. i can't stay away from negative people but i use God as my shield to protect me from being affected. you can stay positive in a negative environment which can rub off on others too. asking God for help and listening to God helps a lot. if people talk negatively about me, i don't let it get to me as i know the truths and God knows the truths. and that's all that matters at the end. i take great comfort in reading the koran.

In my experience trying to mask or ignore the feelings never works in the long term. I always find that if I spend a day accepting the way I feel but not succumbing to those feelings it gives me a sense of power. Next I try to find the things I feel positive about. Then I call my support network of friends and family. The reason I don't call them first is because it can be hard for people to help me when everything seems so dark and negative. When I already have a bit to build on it helps me and the people who want to built me up.

I also like to talk to God. I will sit in a room by myself and speak aloud, not in my head, and address everything to Him. It helps me out immensely.

I hope you feel better and if you ever want someone to talk too feel free to PM me.

I was also very happy to read what IAMOP wrote... coz this is exactly my experience. This is insight!! yay bravo

One thing one should always start off with, is to pray to Allah for help and guidance... ask and pray!
Focusing on gratitude is also a wonderful thing... it's not just a feeling, or state of mind, or acknowledgement... but it actually starts to change things in your life! Practice gratitude! The more you practice, the easier it gets and the brighter your life gets.

You would also like to recommend you to check this guy out

The mind is not an uncontrollable mystery... it's like a machine that you can train if you know some about how it works!

                                  Peace and good luck!

                                    Salam IAMOP,

Believe me or not, this is exactly in general principle how i feel when trying to do my pk's..
i think of the movement of the object, try to feel object's presence in my mind..
                                    relax my muscle's tension..
when ever there exists tensions i concentrate on removing it by thoughts alone..
then once the tensions relieved the object starts to move..
sometime when "over" relaxing i get kind of "high"..

                                    wallahua3lam
                                    peace

You now dedicate your life to be the Hemorrhoid that humanity deserves in its back. You dedicate your life to rebel against peace and justice of the species that gave you none.
