Where in the Quran does it say a woman must cover her hair?

i am curious, what is a " prayer cap( kufi)? I never heard of it before.

The Quran does not say cover your hair or face.
actually to cover your hair is christian i.e. like a Nun
(Christianity came before Islam) so we have some christian and jewish influence.
We have been unfortunate in the west to have receive an adulterated version of Islam
and now face the task of fighting our way back to Islam as Allah revealed it originally
You only have to obey Allah (hint from the Garden of Eden)
not me or anybody else.

Actually this originated from the Jewish concept of Eve being responsible for the original sin, Adam had been enamoured by her long hair as often shown in their depictions of Adam and Eve. As a punishment, and to keep men safe from the spell of women, the descendants of Eve, women were required to shave off their hair.An Ultra orthodox Jewish woman is required to cut off her hair when she marries and from then on wear a wig.
This is based on a particular verse in the book of Numbers, a part of the Torah or Old Testament. The Wig must then be worn as a head covering for the rest of her life even if divorced or she becomes a widow. Not all Jewish women observe this custom, only the very very orthodox.

It really depends on who you ask unfortunately. I have met Quranists who can actually justify the woman covering her hair, but most others say it means the breasts/bosoms and to be modest.
Personally, I don't think it means to cover the hair from the explanations I have read. The reason being is that in some places covering your head makes you stand out. Isn't the purpose of covering supposed to prevent the looks (albeit lustful looks) of others? In the U.S. unless you live somewhere that is primarily Islamic (like Dearborn Michigan), you stick out like a sore thumb and make people look at you. Yet, if you dress normally and uncovered no one pays attention to you.
But in Islamic countries the opposite is true.

Totally agree. It can be even more scary to see niqaabis in the states (or ninjas as we called them in school) i mean it seems like niqaabis in particular are attention seekers

Second you equate the Torah to the Tanakh as if the were the same. Lastly you assume that there isn't a single Christian or Muslim that doesn't accept the validity and authority of the Tanankh.
The Torah and Tanakh are not the same. The Torah is the first five books of the Tanakh which include 19 others. Jewish theology stipulates that some of these books were not written by prophets. The Tanakh was a continuously evolving book. Some scholars believe that it was not codified completely until after the death of Jesus.
There is dispute over whether Moses wrote the Torah as we have it. How could he have if he dies in the first half of Deuteronomy and the book continues?
Lastly all Muslims are supposed To believe the Quran over the Old Testement. Anyone who has read both know they don't always agree.

I read a really great book on this topic called "The Veil and the Male Elite" by FATIMA MERNISSI. It's a very good read and addresses why women began covering. I do not cover my head and my conscience is clear. I feel how other people feel that it would actually draw more attention to me.

But I hear it's haram not to wear one. I wouldn't want to disobey God, so if someone could help answer my question that would be great!Nowhere a woman should cover her hair in Quran, just tradition among Arab .
Of course we should think that God never forget to ask a woman to cover it, if He needs so in Quran.
Haram (maybe, please ask Jews) for this case if you are Jews not for moslem who use Quran as guidance.
Anyway, as stated in previous comments, I think it is better to wear clothes according to local custom , as far under the rule of Quran, It will be good for us because it will not draw attention so much to us.Sorry about my English
