Is it true that The Prophet Muhammad married 9 wives?
If so would he not have violated the limit of Four?
Or is this just another in the long line of fabricated ahadith?

Apparently he was exempt. But in any case, because there's no proof in the quran about the 'number of wives', I'm not really bothered. http//web.gay.hr/smilies/coffee.gif

        Peace be upon you Zenje,

LOL!!! Where did you get that emoticon???? LOL!!!!

Omari brings up a good point for discussion though, how exactly are we to understand the wives of the prophet? Certainly the wives of a man 1400 years ago must be dead, why do we have those verses?

          Salam Zenje

I've heard that from the Sunnis also...that he was exempt...but for all we know he could have had only four although almost every single history book is well documented with him having nine...

When the Quran was being revealed people around the Prophet knew his wives....so we should not just take it from today...in anycase it's just a question which a Christian asked...it realy is not bothering me at all

The restriction on the number of wives (4) was implimented after all of his marriages I believe. Plus the Quran gave right to the Prophet to have any number of wives he wanted. I am not sure about the exact ayah though, but I think it is in Surah 33.

              Peace be upon you,

I have the idea that when the "wives" of the prophet are spoken about, it might be referring to those who "marry" the message. I cannot see why a man 1400 years ago would be allowed to marry as many wives as he wanted. I see no evidence that any of the other "examples" had many wives. We all have the same system(deen), how can one man be given a free pass from this system, which is the same for all? We have to keep in mind that it NEVER states that "ahmad/muhammad" can have as many wives as he wants, the verse talks about "nabi"(bringer of renewed message or the renewed message itself).

O Prophet! surely We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those whom your right hand possesses out of those whom Allah has given to you as prisoners of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who fled with you; and a believing woman if she gave herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet desired to marry her-- specially for you, not for the (rest of) believers; We know what We have ordained for them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess in order that no blame may attach to you; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

                Read the Quran more often.

Why did he marry more than one wife?

He was poor. It wasn't as if he was a king who by marrying multiple wives was supporting these women.

His life was just as much in jeaoperdy as the lives of several men who were dying by fighting the pagans, so if he died, more than one woman all of a sudden would become a widow.

                      Why? What's the reason?
