Masturbation and Fasting
-
Salamin Alaikum,
So....I was thinking, on the relationship of masturbation and fasting. I went through a thread that was started a long time ago regarding this subject, but unfortunately, people went off topic and there really wasn't a final consensus or something (http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=12826.0) So I thought that I'll restart the topic to see what we come up with.
Here is my understanding; In the Quran (Ch. 2 Verse 187 I think), God mentions that Rafathu Ila Nisa is permissible in the nights after the fasts. Other than that He mentions that we may eat and drink till the dawn. So Rafathu Ila Nisa, eating and drinking are not allowed in the day of the fast. Rafathu according to Classical Arabic dictionaries refers to sexual activities, obscene activities, immodest activities, and going in (If you know what I mean). Ila means 'Towards', and 'Nisa' means women. Later God mentions that they are a Libas to us and we are a Libas to them, and that we may 'Bashir' with them and seek what God has ordained for us. Bashir means to be physically in contact in this context. Based on all these points, I don't think masturbation breaks one's fast. There is a big difference between intercourse and masturbation (Or at least that's what I've read), and the Quran is talking about the former, and there seems to be no indication of the latter. One is not only Rafathing with his wife to fulfill desires, he is also supposed to seek what God has ordained for him (Probably referring to children), and there is a whole different feeling between sexual activities with one's wife and one's hand (Am I correct?). Although I think that one should not do it, and avoid it in all cases. As the deed itself isn't that good. That was my view, looking forward for replies.
P.S. Check this out This is coming from Albanee, he also think that ejaculation whether intentional or not, without intercourse does not break fast http//www.hoor-al-ayn.com/articles/Fiqh/Ejaculation%20and%20Ramadan.pdf

I think you need to look longer back into the Abrahamic religion because we are ordered to "fast as those before you". This is if you want to find any in-ink proof. Because the way I see it, the Quran only touches those topics where "those before us" have gone astray (with fasting).
Or you could take a more philosophical approach. One of the fasting aspects is to teach you gratitude through abstinence. If you feel you are missing your hand during the day it is good, you will learn to appreciate it more during the night -[
If you feel it wouldnt matter and it is no problem for you to stay away from spanking the monkey, then it is not really fasting if you would refrain, right? -

Salam sister
If you could be so kind to explain?
the sister thinks it is funny because you wrote
"If you feel you are missing your hand during the day it is good, you will learn to appreciate it more during the night" and "stay away from spanking the monkey".

What is LAWL?
On the other hand, even if it inmature, there are people who are inmature, they still deserve respect and deserve that we explain whatever we think about what they say and why when they ask politely.
That said, I haven't got much of what is being said here. Everyoen seems to have gone off on their own thoughts.

I like where this is going...
@OP Women also masturbate almost as much as men (at least I'd hope so...)

From my understanding, masturbation is a sin, because it is not your spouse 237.
God tells us to remain chaste until marriage, masturbation kind of breaks that rule. From 237, anything after having relations with your spouse is a sin, be it yourself, an animal, an inanimate object etc....
sorry for the obscene language -X

Salam Youssef and all
Fasting and masturbation do not match togheter in my understanding. Whoever The purpose of fasting is to keep his lust in check, whether this is now on food or drink or an other desire / craving for something else, can also be money, power, position or something similar. Believer should be self-disciplined and fasting is a practice to do so.
Youssef I beg to differ. I would deny masturbation when fasting. However, I do not see it as a sin when singles with normal biological needs relieved themselves instead from escaping in forbidden sexual intercourse.
There are many reasons why someone can not marry, partly social, psychological or physical. What should a long-period-single do in your opinion? To castrate? (I'm talking more of the masculine side, where it seems to be -apparently-a biological need of the man who he can not control, in contrast to the woman -usually- who is also satisfied with tenderness and parental care, even without sexual contact.)
Salam peace -
well no not castration, but chastity and self control.

I got a giggle out of it myself, so Madiha is not alone.

I do not think that the aya brother Youssef quoted includes self, at least I wouldn't be sure. There are things which the Qur'an does not specifically touch. Should we extend other injunctions to cover that?
My take is that where nothing specific is there, we are left to best of our intentions and devices and that we should use that space to strive to improve our self analysis, motivation and judgement.
Certain type of christianism has made such a mountain fo sexual aspects that nowadays Muslims seem anxious to copy and reproduce as it it was the peak of virtue. Sex must be sincere and responsible but has it got to be tragic?
We also tend to think that our own personal feelings or impressions are valid for everybody else, universal. That is a risk. People are different and we cannot impose on others somethign because to us it seems self-evident.
We come back to the ayas of Qur'an which says who guard their private parts. Has one to interpret that one guards them from oneself? I do not think so. I think though that one must use judgement in its use. To me the limits it refers to are the persons from whom they must be guarded. From oneself is oneself, it is not two persons. The limit is set on the person with whom we can rightfully unguard. Does it make sense that we may not guard from the consort, but should guard from ourselves? This conclusion reminds me of the hadith where it is said that the wife MUST always be ready for HIM no matter what. There is a consideration to be had with the consort and I guess there is a consideration that must be had with ourselves too.

Oh God, I can't believe I am actually partaking in this thread, but
in contrast to the woman -usually- who is also satisfied with tenderness and parental care, even without sexual contact.
Are you sure you don't want to review the above statement?
i was sure, that nobody will leave this above statement ;D -- Sister Huruf gives the answer

Funny that, yet you did the same. It's a very archaic view that women are "satisfied" with just a few kind words, a stroke of the hair and "a licence to breed". Scintillation of flesh not required! If this were true, the majority of the women I know personally and know of would not own certain sexual devices (how I regret coming here and ever contributing to this thread! Forgive me, God! pr ) and the industry would not be booming as much as it is. Although, of course, there are men who are also serviced by that same industry.
Salaam.
