Do you believe Noah lived for 950 years?
-
2914
And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.Do you guys take this verse literally or figuratively? If figuratively then how do you interpret it?

Salam, Bro.
The terms "sana" and "3am" are not synonymous in the Quran. When Allah says He revealed his book in the eloquent and clear tongue (3arabi), He means precisely that. And in the language of the Quran, there is no such thing as synonyms. The mountain "jabal" is not the same as the "tur" . Likewise, the "bahr" (large body of water) is not the same as the "yamm" , which is a cascading stream falling from a mountainside. The "ruuh" (spirit) is not synonymous with "nafs" (soul). The Eloquent tongue is composed of three-letter roots that have distinct meanings, directly in relation to the phenomena they describe. If you change the root, you change the meaning. There is no compromise in the matter. Allah does not play games. It is the so-called "Muslims" who claimed the language of the Quran is equal to the classical Arabic of poetry, and started substituting and interplacing words here and there in there exigesis, claiming that they are synonymous. They have made a mockery out of Allah's Scripture.
The word "sanah" means a periodic cycle that repeats itself. Simple as that. In fact "sanah" and "sunnah" are actually from the same root, are spelled the same (ة and are indistinguishable if you remove the dialectic marks or articulation. The two terms have related but not identical meanings. "Sunnah" is "the way" or "form of behavior" or "law" or "habit" that is followed regularly and never changes. Think of the Sunnah of Allah manifesting in the universe. Likewise, a "sanah" is a repeating and regular cycle which could be measured in different units. It could be a year, a day, a harvest season, a lunar cycle, a flood season, you name it...It depends on the object that is measured and the civilization that used it.
Concerning Noah, the Quran says he lived 1000 sanah minus 50 3am.. The appearance of both terms in the same verse clearly indicates that they are not synonyms. If they had the same meaning, it would have said "1000 sanah minus 50", or better yet, simply "950 sanahs".
Incidently, you might want to take note that the Quran was revealed in the same region as the Older Scriptures, including the Torah. If you read in the Torah that Noah lived 1000 years, and you see an expression that seems to indicate the same meaning in the Quran, you have to analyze it closely to make sure. Once you do, you will realize that the Quran is independant of previous scriptures, and uses its own terms and meanings that are not necessarily the same as those other scriptures. The Quran must be studied independantly.
Peace and regards...

I take it literally. The Lord is surely capable of prolonging the lifespan of His servants as He pleases. I find Him doing so in this particular case much more likely than the verse being figurative of something else for some reason.
Put another way; since I believe Allah to be Most Miraculous, I don't see why grasping for a figurative interpretation is at all necessary. I suspect those who disbelieve in the power of the Creator may be of differing opinions.

So @Pazuzu, what is the translation? How long did he live?
Thank you -

This post has absolutely nothing to do with my question. Not once did I mention other scriptures or anything about Arabic grammar.
My question is simple Do you believe the verse about Noah's age is literal or figurative and if you say it is figurative then how do you interpret it?

-
Salaam,
I take it literally but it is as per my understanding not 950 years.
I agree with Pazuzu that different words have different meanings. At the moment I don't know what a Quranic "3am" is and I don't know what a Quranic "sana" is.
Salaam,
BenderIf you're saying it as per your understanding and no 950 years that means you DON'T take the verse literally. All the renowned and established translators translate it as 950 years.
If you take the 950 years to mean something other than what it actually says that means you aren't accepting the literal interpretation but a figurative interpretation which means something different.
What exactly do you take it to mean personally?

BenderMan can people just clearly answer the question?
Obviously the first one is 950X and
the second one is 20X = Y
Now can you answer my clear question on whether or not you believe Noah was literally 950 years old or do you interpret in another way?
It's not a trick question it's simple and doesn't require a convoluted answer like I'm sure you're going to attempt to give me. I'm just asking what you personally believe.

Salaam,
I already answered you in my first post. Yes I take it literally but because I don't know what "3am" and "sana" exactly means I can not say it's 950 years. I don't understand what you find difficult about my answer. I gave you the math example to show you what my problem is not to confuse you.
Please take a look at the verse
2914 And We had sent Noah to his people, so he stayed with them one thousand SANATIN less fifty 3AAMAN. Then the flood took them while they were wicked.I hope you understand now.
Salaam,
Benderbtw 20X=Y would be only correct if it was an equation thus, 1000X - 50Y = 0
but we can learn from this verse what the max is of a 3AAM in comparison to a SANAA -

Peace.
I think that if we look at all the passages where "sana" is mentioned, it seems to have to do with the natural cycle of the earth (For example, see 105 and 1712).
On the other hand, "aam" seem to have to do with human calendars. For example, see "aamohm" (their year)
So the formula for Noah is
1000 natural cycles - 50 calendar cycles
I don't know what this formula implies. Perhaps time on the arc time passed differently than on earth.
Peace and all best wishes,
Ayman

i don't believe that Noah literally or figuratively lived 950 years.

As-Salaam Alaikum,
Noah witnessed the sinking of Atlantis with the flood, that was millenia before what we even call "ancient history", a totally different age of man where one could easily live long life spans so yes I take it literally.
source? citation for this claim?
-
So @Pazuzu, what is the translation? How long did he live?
There's no shame in admitting that I simply DON'T KNOW. We don't yet have archeological evidence explaining what kind of calendar system Noah and his people used. But I can give you an example supporting the Quran's use of the two non-synonymous terms
Assume, for example, that Noah's people used a system based on 12-day weeks. Hence, each "sanah" is composed of 12 days. 1000 sanah would then be equal to around 83 of our years. Now, 83 - 50 = 33 years. So Noah lived among his people for 33 of our solar years.
So to answer the question Yes, I believe the verse is literal... However, I don't believe that Noah lived to a supernatural age.
Peace.

Salam Faithful Jinn,
I agree with Gnosis, Earlier i used to take the prophetic stories symbolically, but recently i watched Spirit Science on esoteric tube, It was mentioned that ancient people (around 10000 BC) lived very long lives & were about 10 feet tall on an average...these were the findings from ancient egytian writings..Archeologists now agree that pyramids were built around 10000 BC unlike around 2500 Bc assumed earlier. All this has to do with the shift Earth takes every 26000 years, that is why there is such a hue cry about 2012, the world ofcourse is not ending but we are entering a new phase of consciousness.
I deviated from the topic but i can assure that there is a lot we do not know about this world/universe, so trying to refute the quran based on our lil knowledge is not a good option. I read your post abt losing faith in islam, all i can tell you is that you do not need to follow any particular book or a specific 'God' , just be a good moral person & help the people around ...that is enough to become spiritually pure & is a true form of submission to 'The Creator'.
Please, i aint preaching, just wanted to talk to you & say i enjoy reading your posts, but to go through mental turmoil trying to know all the 'Truth' at once is not worth it. It will just dawn on you someday, till then enjoy the journey.
Peace!

Peace Eve.
I was hoping you knew the age of "Noah". You were around at the time? ( only joking!)
Actually I agree with you. Also your advice is sound. I like quote" It will just dawn on you someday"
It reminds me of " Dawn" after darkness of the night, light of the day comes ( hopefully to guide those who wish to be guided)
Sorry Faithful Jinn I do not know the answer either.
Peace.

Amazing how we can put our faith in people riding donkeys - who claim to know what happened thousends of years earlier!
hail we can believe anything really, we just need to be programmed that way.
Once someone analysed the verse on Noah and said ;
"He dwelt with them all his years accept 50" which makes perfect sense.
peace
