Do all religions deserve respect automatically?
-
Who needs respect? The one who gives it or the one who gets it? I think it is the one who gives it who needs respect. Respect is observance of the limits given by God. We are not kings, we are not infallible, we are not judges, we are not but simple servants of God intheir way back to Him, just like everything else that exists. Respect for others is respect for own fitra, for our own actions. The respect I may show to other people is the respect I need, I would want for myself. We are all wrong, at some time or other in our lifes, in one spect or another, we have shortcomings. That is why our life has a discourse, evolves, because we are improvable. We have our own way to get to fulfill our human destiny. If we got reprimanded every time we do something or we do not do something that we could have done better or that we could have done, we wouldn't dare take a step.
Everybody moves, wrong or right, it is a way back to Him. We need to respect every way. We need it ourselves. We may disagree strongly with something, as long as what others do does not amount to opression, we should let them and have a benevolent attitude. They will get there eventually. Because what is important is that, wrong or right, everything is step along the way.
If we see in others our mistakes, more of a reason to be patient and encourage others along their own way.
Yes, respecto for people, respect for their responsibility on this dunya. To judge between right and wrong let us apply to ourselves.
Salaam

Peace. I have not read the details of the thread fully, but I don't think all religions deserve respect automatically. I feel that some religions (from my perspective) contain an ideology that shows that they are downright oppressive and sadistic within doctrine or prescribed practices.
At the end of day, I think people deserve respect automatically, as this gives every individual the benefit of the doubt. I try to give Sunnis and Shias the benefit of the doubt when given an opportunity to befriend them, but I strongly dislike their brand of Islam and have very little respect or patience for it.

Peace Stop S
I recall you saying you were athiest, therefore I will not quote Quran, but if you want to check out these verses feel free to do so. (Quran 608-9) and (Quran 4135)
Does a religion, or do all religions automatically deserve respect? Are religious believers demanding respect or acceptance?
It's not a question of religions deserving respect, but respect is due to people in general, therefore, people who have done nothing to you are to be treated kindly.

So who decides which religion is oppressive? I don't know of any follower of any religion who will say their religion is violent.

Why do people deserve respect automatically? Benefit of whose doubt? What if someone you respect steals your phone and blames another person?
-

I agree totally - but I do not require any religious input to know that.
Does a religion, or do all religions automatically deserve respect? Are religious believers demanding respect or acceptance?
I am requested to dress according to the local culture and wear "Islamic dress" in Muslim majority countries.
The students in the UK I mentioned in the beginning were called disrespectful when putting a label of Muhammad on a pineapple.
People are regularly killed when a Muslim feels that a non-Muslim behaves dis-respectful towards Islam.
My intuition tells me I can only insult what can feel insulted. So I can't really insult objects or dead people.
But my intuition seems to be different from what Muslims think, so I ask to find out what the difference is and why it could be different and to what extent. -

I believe it is up to the individual to decide for themselves after investigating the tenants and practices of the religion for themselves. Nobody can/should dictate to you as to what you should perceive in regard to a particular religion. Of course, if religions don't interest you, then simply don't bother.
Those who have not done harm to you, do they not deserve your respect? Of course, they do. Though, you may beg to differ. The benefit of one's own doubt. I suppose if I found out later of such a person, then I would lose my respect for them.
You may tell me that you do not need religious input for the above. That is fine, then.

You said that some religions "are downright oppressive and sadistic" to which I asked who decides which is what. Any answer?
You also said that "people deserve respect automatically". I asked why and you ignored it. Is this intentional or your inability to respond?
Do I need to respect humans trying to kill me? What should I feel towards humans who are so appalled by the fact that I believe something different than they do that they want to kill me?
If I call my cat Aisha because I don't understand the intricacies of Islam, do I deserve punishment? If my little daughter calls her teddy bear Muhammad because it reminds her of her teacher called Muhammad, do I deserve to be killed? Does my daughter?
Am I showing disrespect to Muslims if I use an object or name in a way a Muslim would not?
Can I insult a book or a name? Can an object or a name feel insulted?
Can I insult a religion?
That is why I asked the question. -

totally agree. Thats my standpoint as well. However, i would love to see all religions disappear from this earth as that would create more peace and progressive.

yes yes and who decides that hitler and stalin was opressive, who decides that stealing and robbery is wrong, who decides that killing people are wrong ) ) )
If a religion imposes its belief or rules on others, then its opressive. Death for apostasty as islam mandates (sunni-shia version) is sadistic. Do you want evidences for that? or do you want evidences for stealing is opressive?
You also said that "people deserve respect automatically". I asked why and you ignored it. Is this intentional or your inability to respond?
with all due respect, your questions are silly or maybe you want to have people explain common sense for you? you really wanna know why people deserve respect?

Peace Maha,
I would not like to see my religion disappear, and how would that happen anyway?
What I would like to see is religious tolerance. If only all religions would honor sura 109
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Say, "O you disbelievers.
"I do not worship what you worship.
"Nor do you worship what I worship.
"Nor will I ever worship what you worship.
"Nor will you ever worship what I worship.
"To you is your religion, and to me is my religion."

Are you now answering what Released apparently is unable to?
Are you aware of what a "strawman fallacy" is? I am asking a question about religion and you "respond" using Hitler. Who cares what people think about Hitler. I am interested in answers regarding religion.
If a religion imposes its belief or rules on others, then its opressive. Death for apostasty as islam mandates (sunni-shia version) is sadistic. Do you want evidences for that? or do you want evidences for stealing is opressive?
Now, can you answer who decides which religions "are downright oppressive and sadistic"? Do you decide?
Muslims expect me, a non-Muslim, to accept the "call for prayer" at 4 in the morning. Is that oppressive?

With all due respect? What an empty and hollow phrase! You tell me to read the posting by "Released" once again - but do you bother trying to understand mine? I gave some very specific examples, which I would expect are easy to answer. Why am I doing this? Well, unlike Released, who has decided for me what I want, I am used to forming my opinions based on what people actually tell me. I call this a conversation. I don't judge people and don't pretend I know what they want, what drives them and what their motives are. I ask.
I will not go through an exercise of "released said" and "I said". If she wants, she can clarify, if not, no problem. If you want to make a point, fine, but I reject your ability to speak for someone else when it comes to very private and personal emotions.

Yes I decide that I wont tolerate someone imposing their religious doctrine on me. And most people - if not all - would agree to this. Even these muslims who expect us all to accept their adhaan call for prayer at 4 in the morning, would hate to hear church bells at 4 in the morning.
Personally I hate the azaan call for prayer at 4 clock, I hate the blasphemy law and I hate that children are being brain washed into islamic doctrine from an early age. That is why I decided to live in a secular country free of all that nonsense. But if the majority of people in a muslim country want azaan at 4 clock in the morning, what can we do, either we have to accept it or we have to find another place to live. God has made the earth large enough as Quran also states.

Haha, no my gripe is a bit more substantial. Muslims attacked the hotel I was staying in because they thought the hotel-guests were being given sex-massages in the spa area and they did not like this. It was in a Muslim majority country, so they stormed the hotel and killed everyone in sight.
Is that the deed of an oppressive religion "imposing their religious doctrine on me" or the act of deluded individuals? Does anyone here require or deserve respect?Personally I hate the azaan call for prayer at 4 clock, I hate the blasphemy law and I hate that children are being brain washed into islamic doctrine from an early age. I grew up in Tehran, so when I accepted a job in UAE I knew what I was getting into. I accept the muezzin and the blockage of roads near all the mosques on a Friday as minor points. That does not bother me the least. I do, however, object to being shot at only because I am a non-believer and, according to some dogma require to be sent to hell. I don't accept that everyone must now pander some fundamentalist Muslim cleric sitting in Yemen because he might find something "offending" and demands "respect".
I apologize for being rude to you.

Is that the deed of an oppressive religion "imposing their religious doctrine on me" or the act of deluded individuals? Does anyone here require or deserve respect?Same problem in Pakistan. It would properly happen to you there as well. Pakistan is famous for making the life a living hell for everyone who seems to be 'against islam, allah or muhammad' and many politicans have been killed due to this e.g. Salman taseer and the christian politician shahbaz Bhatti. Thats also includes behaviours which are seen as being against modesty such as romours about 'sex-messages in the spa area'.
The deluded individuals are imposing their religion on others, and they can justify it by using hadith, scholar opinions and so on.
Everyone deserves respect if he doesnt impose anything on you or others. Why shouldnt he/she deserve respect if she respect you?

I dont like UAE due to their discrimmination towards immigrants and non-citizens. I feel like in UAE everything is so commercial, everything is about money.
But since UAE is used to non-muslim workers, which are actually crucial for their economy, you will be fine as long as you dont express negative views about the government or Islam.Yes there are clerics everywhere in the muslim world, who demand respect from each and everyone in order to not be ''offended''. Each and everyone can offend them simply by holding negative views on their religion.

That's a good and workable definition.

Yes, the looming "we will cancel your visa" is a potent argument.
And it's unfair! When our security took some local men to the police for harassing and trying to rape 2 of our female staff, they went free the next day because one of the guy's father was an important guy and the girls were sent home and their contracts cancelled.Yes there are clerics everywhere in the muslim world, who demand respect from each and everyone in order to not be ''offended''. That is excately what I hate about the arab gulf countries - discrimmination against foreginers and women are obvious while the local men can get away with anything (except speaking up against the government). Sexual slavery and rape through domestic foreigner female maids is an open secret in Saudi Arabia and UAE but it only happens because the local pervert men can get away with it. That is why I never wanted to live there. The West is much more better, here in the West anyone who commits a crime whether local or foreginer would be punished. Equality before the law is one of the crucial values the West upholds.
