Surah 5:90 - Tools of Satan
-
Peace, it's straight forward, read in context which today would be like frequenting a casino...
590-91 O you the ones who believe surely al-khmr/the inebriant/wine and the gambling and the monuments and the arrows filth from work the devil so avoid him that you may prosper surely intends the devil that cause between you the hostility and the hatred in al-khmr/the inebriant/wine and the gambling and hinder you about remembrance The God and from the prayer so shall you (be) those who abstain?
Avoid monuments and arrows? That doesn't make sense to me at all. Is that really the only possible translation? Obviously, it's easy for me to avoid arrows in this day and age. And plus, the different translators switch between stone, stone alters, alters (out of any kind I'm guessing), idols, or sacraments. That's way too broad of a difference in my humble opinion.
And wait, you translate the second word (zay-lam-mim) as arrow's filth. So now is it the arrow I'm supposed to avoid, or its filth? Who's shooting arrows at me? Or am I not to shoot any arrows?
Yes, the intoxicants and gambling are quite clear. I'm not asking about that. I'm asking about the zay-lam-mim root and the nun-saad-ba root.
Peace! yay

Peace, I suggest first read carefully and slowly before auto inserting the non-existent meaning/assertion...

Ok, I don't know if I made my post clear. Please forgive me if I'm making this confusing.

The purple = what I understand.
The red part = what I don't understand. So let me break this down into bits.- Certain things are the work of the devil
- These things will cause hostility and hatred between you
- These things will hinder you from remembering God and performing salat
- You should avoid these things
- These things include gambling, intoxicants, _____, and ______.
What I need to know is, what else besides gambling and intoxicants should I avoid? Surely in order to avoid something, I have to know what it is first!!!
So what is it exactly that I need to avoid so that I won't become an ally to Satan? That's all I'm asking. Please fill in the last two blanks of #5 with a translation and explain to me why that translation would make the most sense.
Thank you!
Peace.

It says so avoid him that you may prosper..."
i.e. avoid all things associated with the devil; read Qur'an beginning to end for details.11 in name The God The Powerful The Merciful ...
2219 they ask you about al-khmr/the inebriant/wine and the gambling say in them both harm immense and benefits to the mankind and the harm of them both greater from benefit of them both and they ask you what had/should they spend say the amnesty/spare like that clarifies The God to you the verses/signs that you may ponder

Ok, I am absolutely sure I made myself clear last time.
I asked you to fill in the blanks for me. You said

avoid all things associated with the devil
Please inform me of what those things are in specific detail which happen to be listed in Surah 590. The problem I have is that the translations I've read do not make it exactly clear what zay-lam-mim and nun-saad-ba are. So please help clarify this.
Anyone else with some insight on this topic?
Thanks and peace.

Peace all,
I have a question about Surah 5, verse 90.
RK O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.
I'm confused about the last two words on the list. I went to Project Root List and looked up the words, and I also looked up the occurrences in Quranic Corpus.
So what exactly should I be staying away from in order to avoid satan? Sacrements? Rituals? The use of arrows? Perhaps hostility? Seeking fortune i.e. worldly gain? All kinds of "worship practices" or religious rites? Idolatry?
Here's my GUESS at what this verse might be
O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, hostility/enmity, and seeking fortune are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.
Or it could be O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and sacraments/religious rites, and hiding the obvious are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.
I say sacraments/religious rites as a whole because that would include any form or idolatry, symbol, idol, etc which would effectively prevent setting up partners with Allah completely. I also say (maybe) hiding the obvious because
Zay-Lam-Miim = to cut off anything projecting or prominent...
If one is to cut off something projecting/prominent, then that thing is obvious. If I remember, Allah describes Himself as the Obvious/Manifest or something along those lines. In many religions, the descriptions of God tend to be very mysterious, or kind of round-about or beat-around-the-bush so that's it's confusing, not straightforward, and forces one to always ask another person i.e. priest or Imam for guidance to understanding. By cutting off prominence/the obvious, you are forcing one to set up partners with Allah. Does that make sense?
But anywho, I'm probably completely wrong but I thought it wouldn't hurt to just throw that out there.
Please let me know about any insight you may have! yay
Peace!Peace inquisitivetrini,
For these ayats I prefer the RK translation, parenthesis are mine.
This my understanding at the moment and is subject to modification.O you who believe, intoxicants( things that fog the mind/make you high), and gambling (money involved), and the altars of idols (pagan rites, superstitions, fortune telling, etc.,), and the games of chance ( no money involved ) are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them (don't waste time with them), that you may succeed.
Explanation of
The devil wants to provoke animosity and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to distract you from remembering GOD, and from observing the Contact Prayers (Salat). Will you then refrain?
The word "distract" is prominent and must be understood as central to the preceding ayats.

peace,
If you cross-referenced Quran, it becomes easier, it suggests "al ansabu" / the idolatrous altars. And for "al azlamu" it implies one can seek division (of something) with them, and in Lane's Lexicon, which is linked to Project Root List explains this pretty well.
I made a post about it here

Peace all,
Thank you for that link, Wakas. It made sense. And thanks to everyone for your input! I will take my time to study about this more.

i.e. avoid all things associated with the devil; read Qur'an beginning to end for details.Suffixed pronoun which is the direct object of Imperative Verb does not link back to Shaitaan because that is the part of Prepositional Phrase + Possessive Phrase. It refers back to the Predicate Rijisun of Subject Nouns in the preceding nominal sentence.
O, those/you who consciously proclaim to have accepted/become believers, listen.
The certain fact; about the Alcoholic Beverages and Gambling, and the Stationary Stone Erections , and decision making-apportion matters-seek judgments through featherless arrows instead of using intellect-thought process;
is that these are the brain scattering filthy delusional tactic of Shai'taan.
Therefore you people avoid that filthy delusional tactic.
This restrain might help you people attain-reap the fruit of perpetual success.
Indeed, desire of Shai'taan is that he might occasion feeling of animosity and grudge-hatred-resentment between you people through alcoholic drinks and gambling.
And that he might divert you people from remembrance of Allah the Exalted and from As-sa'laat by such engagements.
In view of this, would you people then be the abstainers of alcoholic drinks and gambling? -

Peace Mazhar -- correct. Thank you for pointing that out.
