Can someone tell me if, according to a consistent translation, one needs to wash one's hair after sex. Or is a bath and wudu enough. Or even is it the same verb for wasting yourself and doing wudu?

No, wudu is a separate action of preparation for the Contact-prayer and it should be done independently from bathing, or washing, or brushing the teeth!
It is as if wudu is the entrance to our inner temple where we met God and an introduction to the contact with Him.
Before, only the High Priests used to purify themselves to enter into the contact with the Divine, but after the Qur'an, that contact prayer is accessible to everyone who is a true believer, and wishes to be pure when contacting his Allah.

It is my understanding that requirement for water to reach the scalp or even just washing the hair is borne of hadith, not from the Qu'ran. There was another thread in late October (I believe it was then) where someone (mmkahn I think) pointed out exactly what ghusl was, and that wudhu and ghusl are done seperately.

Just think, if you get some dirt on your hand or on a side of your foot, will you take a back every time? For me, only washing parts that needed cleaning and then wudu is enough for alSalaat.

The reason I am asking this question is because I want to be sure whether I need to wash my hair after sex and before I do salat. I have extremely thick, long hair. As you can imagine, it becomes a chore to wash it frequently. I sometimes find myself turning my husband down so that I can do salat without having to wash my locks.

I cannot find anywhere in Qoran where God asked us to wash our hair specifically . He asked us to wash ( after sex) and to do ablution in preparation of prayer? I believe if God wanted the hair washing He would have said ( your body and hair?) It is up to us to wash our hair when it needs washing.
That is my honest opinion, you can double check and go with what you find Qoran instructing you to do.
God forbids us to make up rules and complicate matters. His book is fully detailed.
Sister, God knows your heart and intention. Stay loyal to Him and life becomes easier and comfortable. He wishes no hardship on His believers.

Thank you for sharing your reason. I hope my earlier reply was of some help inshaAllah. I just noticed that I made a mistake in there. Correct is in red below.

I agree with Good Logic I have not seen where the Qur'an says we have to wash our hair as part of ghusl/wudhu.
