after reading on the subject I've concluded(think) that according to the hadith music and singing is Haraam. I know most of you here doesn't follow the collection of Hadith. but is there any verse in the Quran that actually mentions music, singing or any kind of description that relates to them?

    Peace.

    Yes there is!

"Say, 'It is He who has brought you into being and made for you hearing, sight and understanding, how little thanks you give!' " (Qur'an 6723)

Why should you not hear things that are pleasing? Music touches your heart! It often puts me in a good mood after being in a bad one. I think this is an obvious grace from God.

Check out this article, too. It points out other verses that are relevant to what you're asking.

      Shalom Aleikhem,

after reading on the subject I've concluded(think) that according to the hadith music and singing is Haraam. I know most of you here doesn't follow the collection of Hadith. but is there any verse in the Quran that actually mentions music, singing or any kind of description that relates to them?

      Peace.

      Welcome to Free-Minds.

There is no ayaat in the Qur'an forbidding music/musical instruments. However, in their effort to twist their tongues and make the Qur'an say what it doesn't, many traditional muslims quote an ayaat about music. Ofcourse the ayaat has nothing to do with music. Here is the ayaat

316 And from the people, there are those who will purchase a baseless narrative with which to mislead from the path of God without knowledge, and to make it a mockery. These will have a humiliating retribution.

I know, the above ayaat has nothing to do with music. But they want to claim that "baseless narrative" in the ayaat is music. But the irony can be witnessed when you check out the arabic word for baseless narrative

      316

      = alhadeethi

So, if you can read, you know that the ayaat talks about baseless hadiths. Baseless tales/speeches/narratives/stories that some people use to mislead others.

Well, you may try to reason with them using God's revelation, but the arrogant ones turn away from them, they need baseless hadiths, not perfected guidance from the revelations. It is baffling how these clear revelations are not enough for them, they will resort to yet another hadith to ban this and that, or allow this and that. Here is a nice thing, let us read that ayaat with it's surrounding

      311 ALM.
312 These are the signs of the Book of wisdom.
313 A guide and a mercy for the good doers.
314 Those who hold the contact prayer, and contribute towards purification and regarding the Hereafter they are certain.
315 These are on a guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful ones.
316 And from the people, there are those who will purchase a baseless HADITHI with which to mislead from the path of God without knowledge, and to make it a mockery. These will have a humiliating retribution.
317 And when Our revelations are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as if he did not hear them, as if there is a deafness in his ears. So announce to him a painful retribution.

      Peace

        Peace Lookitup.

This following "aya" will give those who claim music is haram some food for thought
        646
Say, "What if God took away your hearing and your eyesight, and sealed your minds; which god, other than God, can restore these for you?" Note how we explain the revelations, and note how they still deviate!

If the Lord provided the hearing for us to enjoy listening, who are these people that want to take away the pleasure of hearing good music?

I believe the same thing we do for taste and look , we should do with hearing . Take what is good /best and ignore what is bad. We should be the judge of what we want to hear!
Enjoy your music. Stay loyal to the one who gave you the hearing and thank Him.

        Peace.

          @inquisitivetrini
thank you for the link. I'll Look it up.
          Peace.

          @Student of Allah
thanks for the reply I have to clarify that I'm still learning and I cannot yet decide which path is the true path. (continuing on)
on some translation "baseless narrative" is translated as "idle talk" which translation are you currently reading?
          Peace.

          @good logic

yes I can see what you are saying although I myself don't actually see any wrong in tunes, music, orchestra but as a muslim I must obey the commands of Allah. if music is prohibited and if the proof is presented then willingly or unwillingly I must obey.
I guess it boils down to the Question is the collection Hadith(narration) that we know of today truly the word of the messenger?

I won't bother you guys and I'll just study more on the subject. but I do have a quick question that need answering.
guys, I've been reading the Quran but not step by step I keep jumping from chapter to chapter and I had to ask... is there anywhere in the entire Quran that speaks about the messenger(or muslims) to only take divine Laws(prohibition) exclusively from the Quran?

          thanks.

is there anywhere in the entire Quran that speaks about the messenger(or muslims) to only take divine Laws(prohibition) exclusively from the Quran?

6112 And as such,We have permitted the enemies of every prophet, mankind and Jinn devils, to inspire each other with fancy words in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.
6113 That is so the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter will listen to it, and they will accept it, and they will take of it what they will.
6114 "Shall I seek other than God as a judge when He has sent down to you the Book fully detailed?" Those to whom We have given the Book know it is sent down from your Lord with the truth; so do not be of those who have doubt.
6115 And the word of your Lord has been completed with truth and justice; there is no changing His words. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
6116 And if you obey most of those on the earth they will lead you away from the path of God; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess.
6117 Your Lord is fully aware of who strays from His path, and He is fully aware of the guided ones.
6118 So eat from that on which the name of God has been mentioned, if you indeed believe in His revelations.
6119 And why should you not eat that on which the name of God has been mentioned, when He has fully detailed to you what has been made unlawful; except what you are forced to? Many misguide by their desires without knowledge; your Lord is fully aware of the transgressors.
6120 And leave what is openly a sin and what is subtle of it; those who earn sin will be punished for what they have taken.
6121 And do not eat from that which the name of God has not been mentioned, for it is wickedness. And the devils they inspire their supporters to argue with you; and if you obey them, then you are polytheists.

1057 O people, advice has come to you from your Lord and a healing for what is in the chests, and a guidance and a mercy for the believers.
1058 Say "By the grace of God and His mercy." For that let them rejoice, that is better than all that they gather.
1059 Say "Have you seen what God has sent down to you from provisions, then you have made some of it forbidden and some lawful?" Say "Did God authorize you, or do you invent lies about God?"
1060 And what will those who invent lies about God think on the Day of Resurrection? God is with great bounty to the people, but most of them are not thankful.

16114 So eat from what God has provided you, that which is good and lawful, and be thankful for the blessing of God, if it is indeed He whom you serve.
16115 He has only forbidden for you what is already dead, and the blood, and the meat of pig, and what was sacrificed to any other than God. But whoever is forced to, without seeking disobedience or transgression, then God is Forgiver, Merciful.
16116 And do not say, as to what your tongues falsely describe "This is lawful, and that is forbidden;" that you seek to invent lies about God. Those who invent lies about God will not succeed.
16117 A small enjoyment, and they will have a painful retribution.

6150 Say "Bring forth your witnesses who bear witness that God has made this unlawful." If they bear witness, then do not bear witness with them, nor follow the desires of those who deny Our revelations, and those who do not believe in the Hereafter; and they make equals with their Lord!
6151 Say "Come let me recite what your Lord has made unlawful for you that you should not set up anything with Him; and do good to your parents; and do not kill your children for fear of poverty, We provide for you and for them; and do not come near lewdness, what is evident of it and what is subtle; and do not take the life which God has made forbidden, except in justice. That is what He enjoined you that you may comprehend."

661 O you prophet, why do you make unlawful what God has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? God is Forgiver, Merciful.
662 God has already given the law, regarding the cancellation of oaths. And God is your Lord, and He is the Knowledgeable, the Wise.

469 Say I am no different from the other messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is inspired to me. I am no more than a clear warner.

There are actually many more verses than these. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

            Peace! sun

Well, even if you translate that as idle talk, does that all of a sudden become music ? By no means can that be so. I believe I have already shown you that the ayaat was talking about baseless/idle talk/speech/narrative/etc. If you read my earlier post, you will notice that I have given "speech" as a possible option for translation, let me quote mysel

              316

              = alhadeethi

So, if you can read, you know that the ayaat talks about baseless hadiths. Baseless tales/speeches/narratives/stories that some people use to mislead others.

So, talk, speech, they are all ok with me. However, I was pointing out how irrationally they use this ayaat to ban music and musical instrument. I mean, what has idle/baseless talks got to do with musical instruments and music in general ?

Wish you best of luck with your studies, may God guide you to His straight path.

You said you have concluded (made up your mind). base on what? only on haddiths? Have you taken your leaders as Guidance besides Allah.
is there any verse in the Quran? how did you became a muslim if you haven't read the qur'an. are you of theose who are born into the religion and have never read the qura'n and only do what they found their father doing?.

Then people gives you proves from the qura'n and you reject them. You sound just like the Christians after making them see that Jesus never said in the bible that he was God; they trow away the bible and say that the bible is not important and that what is important is that in their heart Jesus is God. I hope Allah leads you out of the darkness you are in; but remember, he only leads those who take nobody but Him as teacher and guidance, because he is a jealous God, and thats clear from the Torah.

"And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember then is there any that will receive admonition?"Sura 5417
"God has sent down the very best "hadith" in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, which makes all those who fear their Lord shudder. So their hearts and bodies become receptive to the remembrance of God. you misunderstood me. I said that I've concluded that according to the collection of hadith music/singing is forbidden. if one does take hadith into account in his religion/deen than music would be prohibited. yes I've never read the Quran fully it is only until recently that I've began to get deeper on the subject. I thank you for your reply.

that is true without hadith one cannot simply render the word "idle talk" into singing/music.
                      thank you for replying.

Lookitup, it is awfully funny that you say that hadith made you come to that conclusion because in fact I have read hadith where the Prophet not only approves of music and dancing, but actually encourages to participate. So...

If you start asking hadith in order to act or not act in some particularly way you will end up having to choose between hadiths or choosing whatever pleases you or discarding them as a normative source alltogether, because you will be nuts before long.

For the sake of accuracy, I am a sister.

As to reference to hadiths, I am sorry, I am a lousy documenter. I read, I take the gist of it and never care to note down where or what. But I can assure you they exist. May be you can do a search for music, allowed, forbidden... Well I am sure you will be able to manage it, though it may take time.

In fact, one thing about hadith is that on any question you may find one thing and the opposite recommended, ordered, forbidden, etc.

Which even if we think they are authentic, which we will never be able to ascertain, it is logical. Things which are not decisive usually depend a lot on situation, circumstances, persons' condition, etc. ... so why should anything at all always be the same?

The trap of hadith is that anybody can pick whatever he or she likes and pound it on whoever lets him or herself be pounded on with a pile of "holy" words.

The honourable Qur'an on the other hand, comes complete, with all the context we need. Some people say that hadith adds context. No. We do not need a context which is not our context, and context, exact, complete, accurate context can never be reproduced. Therefore, the honourable Qur'an does not give context which may serve only to confuse, but gives just what may feed our understanding and souls.

                                  Salaam

Well, it depends on what you intend to do with the hadiz. If it is your purpose to derive permissions or obligations, then you may have to study a lot, but if one does not want that, but get spiritual or common sense knowledge, then, as far as I am concerned, one does not have to labour like a slave to classify hadizths which are manifest nonsense or irrelevant or outright inmoral or defaming for the Prophet.

I I think there are selections of hadiths where you get good ones by content. As far as I am concerned, that is what should be done. Selection of the ones that offer honest food for thought or reflection. I cannot see the use of dumping a whole lot of irrelevant gossip, or ridiculous recounts.

Absolute certainte I do not think that we will get from any of them that it is stright from the Prophet's mouth. So the content is the relevant element of it. If it serves, well and good, if it does not or diserves, why bother.
