    Salaam,

    What means Sajda?
InshaAllah we will try to see how it is defined in alQuraan with the permission of our Lord, Allah.

Note Please click on aayaat numbers to see other translations.

    Understanding Sajda.

Do you think Yusuf's parents and brothers does Sajda to Yusuf? And do you also think Allah asked Malaaika to do Sajda for Adam if it means prostration? Please remember 380.

    380
380 And he could not order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?

    Sajda for Adam.

    234
234 And when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.

The command was given for Malaaika to Sajda for Adam not prostrate before Adam as it clearly said LiAdam and Li means for. All of them accepted except Iblees and he was not among who does Sajda.

Sajda = To accept the authority/position/honor given by Allah to whom He wills.

Then why Malaaika is asked to do Sajda for Adam?

    230
230 And when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."

Malaaika were given authority on earth before humans and their position was replaced with humans by Allah. The word explains it all, which means to take over one's position. Malaaika asked their Lord "will you give authority on earth to those who causes corruption therein and sheds blood"? Allah replied "Indeed, I know that which you do not know". And Malaaika was asked to do Sajda for Adam and all accepted except Iblees.

Why Iblees did not accept the authority given to humans on earth? As we saw above in 234, means He refused and he was proud. And when he was asked by Allah, what makes you not among those who do Sajda, when I have commanded you and . He gave his reasons

    • I cannot accept the one You created out of clay from an altered black mud.
    • I am better than him, You created me from fire and created him from clay.

And he don't want to accept the honored given to Adam = not done Sajda.

    Sajda for Sun and Moon.

    4137
4137 And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostate to Allah , who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.

Sun, moon, night and day where not given any authority/position/honor over anything, so you don't have to do Sajda for them. But still some do Sajda to Sun besides Allah , actually they have been made for us .

    Sajda for Yusuf.

    1204
1204 When Yusuf said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."

Yusuf saw the sun and the moon and eleven stars doing Sajda to him.

    12100
12100 And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you from bedouin life after Satan had induced between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.

This was explanation of Yusuf's vision when he saw the sun and the moon and eleven stars doing Sajda to him.

    Sajda for people of Musa.

    258
258 And when We said, "Enter this city and eat from it wherever you will in abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens.' We will forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good."

These people of Musa were given authority/position/honor to enter a city and they can use anything from it freely from where they want therein and asked them to accept it while entering the doors of this city. And say relieve us of our burdens. They do Sajda , hence they entered the doors of this city but changed the words asked them to say .

If you notice a tashdeed on waw , this is used to relate sentence after waw with the sentence said before waw. I am not going into its detail here, but just wanted to show you its relation.

    Sajda of magicians.

    2070
2070 So the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Haroon and Musa."

Please note in 2070 above is different than in 2573. They accepted , they said we have believed in the Lord of Haroon and Musa.

    Sajda on aayaat for Allah.

    17107
17107 Say, "Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration

Those who were given knowledge fall upon their chins accepting whatever is recited on them from alQuraan. Also 1958 shows that whoever is guided and chose, when aayaat of alRahmaan recited on them, they fell accepting and weeping.

    Sajda to Allah.

    2218
2218 Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.

Red highlighted part shows that everything in heavens and everything in earth and the sun and the moon and the stars and the mountains and the trees and the moving creatures do Sajda to Allah.

Blue highlighted part shows that and many of the people also do Sajda to Allah, some don't and you may find such in this forum also.

    5362
5362 So prostrate to Allah and worship.

Allah commands us to do Sajda for Him and to serve Him, because we have been created to serve Him . And without doing Sajda for Allah we cannot serve Him.

    Sajda in Salaat to Allah.

    Aqim = straight
    Salaat = connection

When we are asked to do Salaat, we are also informed that Salaat has to be done for the remembrance of Allah and to be devoted in obedience for Allah . Until we accept the authority/position/honor of Allah, we cannot devote in obedience for Allah. After accepted for everything whatever we remember about Allah during Salaat, our Salaat is over .

Please who translate and believe Sajda in Salaat is prostration, then as per 17107, they have to FALL on chins, and I didn't see even a single person literally falling on chins during Salaat. They all go into prostration slowly and carefully.

    8421
8421 And when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate?

When alQuraan was recited on them, they don't accept the authority/position/honor of Allah .

    6842
6842 The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able

They are not able to do Sajda for Allah at that time because

    6843
6843 Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.

Because they were called for Sajda for Allah when they were healthy/sound, but they refused. This is something like the case of Firaun, who did not accept when he was healthy/sound, but tried to accept while drowning.

Please note This is my personal understanding, so please check all the references given from alQuraan before accepting and do not fall on it deaf and blind .

May Allah increase our knowledge and guide us on His path pr

      Wow.

This reminds me of That very famous Sufi poem, "Bullah, kind Jaana main Kaun". In this case, however, it's "Sajda, ki jaana main kaun".

Salaam @es I thought you said you didn't do Arabic, on Mohf's thread? ???
Also, would you be kind enough to render in English what you posted in the transliterated Arabic for me? ( I am still not clear about making a conclusion on mmkhan's post. Too many choices i guess.) Thank you and peace

              Thank you all.

              @ tonggaktuo
Yes, I still believe Salaat is physical, because we have to make our connection with Allah. Isn't making connection physical? hmm

              @ wasi
Nobody will be always in a state of sajda, when you are in university, you will be busy with you studies. Hope you understand what I am saying, inshaAllah. And please change the color of your fonts

                salaam,

Sajda = To accept the authority/position/honor given by Allah to whom He wills.

                Similar to http//mypercept.co.uk/articles/meaning-of-SuJuD-from-Quran.html
submissive, to honour, to pay respect.

                  Salaam wakas,

                  Thank you for the link.

I found it little hard to point out a single meaning in your thread as it has many options. I think, I may need more time to study it, inshaAllah.

From its usage in Quran, e.g. when in a "non-Allah" context, e.g. found SJD to/for the sun, one can enter a gate SJD, etc.

To me, it is like the word "islam", i.e. it has no inherent link to Allah, i.e. an ordinary word.

                              MM Khan,
Thank you for this post. This clears up a lot of things for me. For example, the other day I was reading the story of Prophet Yusef (Joseph) in Chapter 12 to my kids. In my English translation it says his brothers prostrated before him. This seemed strange to me that they would prostate before anyone other than God. But I'm assuming they didn't literally prostate but rather gave him authority/respect. Correct?

I disagree that sajda is not prostration. I think all humans pray the same. Bowing and prostrating and standing are all human forms of worship. It can have different meaning but in the salat context sajda means to bow or prostrate.

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who are with him are hard against the unbelievers merciful one to another. You see them bowing, prostrating, seeking blessing, bounty and good pleasure (of God). Their mark is on their faces, the trace of prostration. That is their likeness in the Torah, and their likeness in the Gospel as a seed that puts forth its shoot, and strengthens it, and it grows strong and rises straight upon its stalk, pleasing the sowers, that through them it may enrage the unbelievers. God has promised those of them who believe and do deeds of righteousness forgiveness and a mighty wage(4829)

                                  Salam

I disagree that sajda is not prostration. I think all humans pray the same. Bowing and prostrating and standing are all human forms of worship. It can have different meaning but in the salat context sajda means to bow or prostrate.

Thank you Bigmo for all the Ayas.
I think the word Sajda in the Quran is like many others it implies two interpretations. Sure, the sun can't prostrate without legs...same for the shadows.
A man however can express his submission and his humility best when he prostrates.
This is not a new practice, but an age-old. Humans prostrated before kings or gods other then Allah.
I can only speak for myself, but when I make my first Sajda before God, 25 years after I had never done it --- it was such a deep feeling that I have never experienced again.
I think that a human can increase his submission, his humility with the physical Sajda
                                  That is my personal opinion.
                                  Peace

                                      MM Khan,
Thank you for this post. Correct?

                                      Salaam Aamer,

                                      You are welcome brother handshake

                                      Red Yes, correct inshaAllah.

                                      May Allah bless you pr

                                        Salaam Bigmo,

It is OK if you disagree bro. But you have given your view without any aayat quoted.

                                        4829

This aayat does not talk about physical prostration marks. Please take a look at the meanings of highlighted words from the aayat 4829.

                                        • Please click here to see its detail.
                                        • Translation you quoted above means it as "marks". Please let me know how how will you translate 2273 with the same word used.
                                        • Why do you think the word "faces" is used instead of "forelock" which is already used in 9615. And I don't see any marks of prostration on faces.

Other references that you have quoted are not important for me, as they have not been sent to me by Allah and I don't have any authenticity for them.

                                        May Allah bless you pr

Red It was your personal experience, I had such experiences too, but it was an effect of your high eimaan and connection with your Lord, and not the physical form that you have done. At that time, even without doing prostration, you may feel the same while sitting on a chair and connect yourself to Allah.

Anyways, @mirjamnur and @Scribbler - Thanks for sharing your views.
