    Peace brothers

Throughout Quran, whom does Allah call upon as "The People of The Book"? Are they those who were given injeal and taurat ? If so, the said Books were replaced by Allah with the latest and HIS Final Book, for Allah Himself admits that the people of their times have corrupted the 'books'. This assertion by Allah straight away dismisses the authenticity and the authority of the previous books as a result humans have no such books at hand. So who are the " People of the Book that Allah addresses " ?

Before attempting to try an answer let us define the application of what the word, "the Book" conveys

" The Book " shall be defined as " the compiled materials of thought on a subject ". Thus the Book has a subject, containing thoughtful materials on the subject concerned, carefully analised and compiled in one's heart after verication of it in his own Soul, the Purest Abode that God has created to teach his mind the Guidance of its application in the worldy life and reap the fruits of it in mutiples in the Hereafter.

" The Book " has many subjects for the Mankind whose number is at a glance is 6666 each subject merging with the rest and thus approving all the Book as a whole. Each subject ramifies and multilplies in the righteous path as Allah Guides he who starts reflecting upon the subject or the messages, the explanation of which cannot be written in words, which if you try to write down, the sea waters and even seven more added to it will dry up as ink.

" The Book " cannot be written in words but shall dwell in one's heart Guiding Him in His Life. Such books, ie., the subjects of the BOOK are given to men in different natures, in forms, in grades and in degrees with respect to his efforts and prayers for Wisdom and the steadfastness with Patience in Allah's Way. This is the basic intelligence each one of us have by the Grace of God. Each has his intelligence different to that of others and none can write them down in words as to what they possess. For it is not for boasting but to conduct himself. Unfortunate for the man, he uses the God given intelligence for Pride and thus becomes a companion of shaitan.

It is at this stage that Allah brings His latest and Final Book and He Addresses the Mankind in His BOOK, as " O, People of The Book ! "

Let us begin on this prelude... this is just the beginning of The Book!

      thank dr.fazl
unfortunately many of us read the quran like reading a story book not understanding that wisdom comes from Allah. we use our worldly knowledge to interprate the book forgetting that only Allah teaches us and only Allah reveals to us the meanings gradually. the more we ponder the more we recieve. everyday i learn from just 1 ayah. everyday is like a new day for me. )
      peace

        Peace be upon you Doctor,

If by "quranist" yu mean people who are concious of the God's Truth, then I agree that these are the people of the book, with "book" not being a physical book, but the book of life itself.

          Yes! Agree,

          This is the only Book.
The Book is only for those who value The Book of Conscience

Salaamun alaikum Dr Fazl , Sherrif and Kyle,

I think before you find out who the 'People of the Book' are, we need to know what 'the book' is.

            The book is

            1. the Quraan itself (15/1, 27/1)

            2. laws of nature (6/3

            3. the ability to understand the underlying laws of the universe (27/40)

So it is a very general term for that which is constant. Ahl-AL-KITAB, people of the book should follow from that.

              A. L. R. These are the Ayats of the Book and that of the Qur'an, clear.

mquran , ALR are referred to as the ayats of the Book in this first sentence. These ayats ie., ALR are also the ayats of the Quran that makes things clear. So which and where is the Book and where/which is the Quran? Now look at 271 and answer the same for the ayats Ta Sin. Unless you say the meanings of ALR and Ta Sin, you cannot proceed to the rest of the 2 points you have made such as follows

              1. laws of nature (6/3

              2. the ability to understand the underlying laws of the universe (27/40)

mquran, speak up all the ayats that ALR and Ta Sin are referring to in the Book and in the Quran - so as to understand the Book and the Quran inorder that we make ourselves clear about the BOOK and about the Quran. There are Two distinctly clear revelations one support the other and that one cannot contradict the other; one is Muhkamath containing in it the naturally endowed wisdom clear, and the other is the Mutashabihat the Wisdom that shall be revealed only from Allah, for further Guidance towards elevation, to those who He Wishes.

                Peace all,

The People of the BOOK are the people today!

                003.070
YUSUFALI Ye People of the Book! Why reject ye the Signs of Allah, of which ye are witnesses?

                012.105
YUSUFALI And how many Signs in the heavens and the earth do they pass by? Yet they turn away from them!

Are we the rejecters! why we turn away our faces? Unable to comprehend those signs? or unable even to see them? or hear them? or feel them? Our knowledge is dead in this regard. Please follow the wisdom when you read quran. Quran is not arabic; but The Book having in it 6666 "signs" of Allah. Don't waste time on arabic; the language cannot teach us"The People Of The Book", the signs of allah!

Well I know people of the the book can have ALOT of meanings. But if not taken in context to mean 'people of this book' it seems that it only refers to people who adhere to the Torah, i.e. Mosaic teachings.

                  .

This definition is from Al-Qamus and is the same one to be found in Lisan al-arab. Although I will double check it's synonymous use with katibah, both possibly meaning divine scripts. If the prhase means 'people of revelation from above' that is something else, but it also can specifically mean 'People of the Mosaic teaching'. The references to the Bible in lane seem to come from Tafsirs only.

                  Godbless,
                  Anwar
