    Peace,

I can't speak for Hawk99, but some (many?) people here refer to other texts that contain strong similarities with the teachings of the Quran as a source of potential wisdom. We are not taking this as a source of divine law or scripture. We recognise that in the texts around the world there are commonalities with the Quran, and this can reflect the point that God sent Messengers and remnants of God's Message remain within some of the texts such as the Bible or other texts as mentioned.

    Agreed

    Thank you supportpeacenotwar

I cannot categorically state that "all" communities have recieved instuctions to
be righteous, but based on Quran this appears to be the case, therefore, I believe
it to be so. The Quran is the final revelation and the seal of God's books to the world.
This being true, then we can conclude that whatever agrees with Quran must also
be true. Conversely, If the Quran disagrees with the other source, then that other
    source is false.

The day will come when we will raise from every community a witness
from among them, and bring you as the witness of these people. We have
revealed to you this book to provide explanations for everything, and guidance,
and mercy, and good news for the submitters

    peace

What is the reason for you to use Hinduism Scripture and Torah for your faith in Islam?

      Peace Earthdom,

I believed in God before reading the Quran but Islam gives the best explanation
and in my life Islam has superceded the rest, therefore, I no longer need them for faith.
      but the knowledge remains.

I use them to show the universality of God's truth and guidance. Is not good good
no matter where you find it? Haven't wise men existed throughout time all over the world?
If Gautama says "do not steal" and the Quran says "do not steal" is not Gautama
correct to state so? There is only ONE DEEN but no monoply. Confucius said,
"Heaven means to be one with God". So you see God's influence is world wide
and not confined to one locality. Islam brings all the truths together via Quran.

Is it allowed in Quran to use another Scripture as source for faith?

      Peace Earthdom,

In my humble opinion if one starts out as christian and the bible is their source of faith,
I do not believe that God would condemn them for starting out that way.

Now for us muslims the Quran is the only source of law or the final say in all matters.

Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you
this book fully detailed?* Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been
revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.

      God is doing everthing

      peace

I'm new to Islam. I'd def consider myself more of a free thinking Muslim, progressive, liberal, etc.
I was just wondering, what is the best way to be a good Muslim?

Read words of Allah, think about them and never believe other words than his words.
Ask Allah to explain you his words and in each reading you will understand new things.
be Aware that traductions is words of Allah mixed with understanding of the traductor.

        Peace

          Peace all,

My opinion is that Islam, or rather islam, is not limited to only one scripture even if it happens that you call yourself Muslim. As long as one can extract Wisdom which brings one closer to God it is okay to browse around in various scriptures from different prophets.

I would gladly read scriptures from Buddhism, even if I have not already done so.

The whole goal in islam is to reach that peace of mind while believing a mastermind created the whole universe and that this one will bring you to another world when your physical body in this world has died. There is no hocus pocus to it, except of God intervenes which happens very rarely.

All (or most of it) science which is proven right is right and we can live by it. It does neither prove or disprove the existence of God and our human science can never prove God because there is no means to measure or observe Him. Still, I would say one individual can feel the proximity of God with enough Faith, but he can never prove this unless God wills it.

A person surrounded by miracles may make people start wondering though, but for most part these "miracles" are just fake to become popular or just being a mental illness.

          Sorry for slipping slightly off-topic.

          God bless you

How to be a good muslim continued

You shall avoid obvious sins, as well as the hidden ones. Those who have
earned sins will surely pay for their transgressions.

Do not eat from that upon which the name of GOD has not been mentioned,
for it is an abomination. The devils inspire their allies to argue with you; if you obey
them, you will be idol worshipers.

              Peace Man of Faith,

I believe that Islam is essentially 'bookless' - I think that was a term I used here. However, I do believe in the Quran's preservation of the Message, so that changes things for me. (I also think the Quran refers to itself as the reminder, from what I've read, although I would need to examine this in further detail. etc etc)

Just out of curiosity, I hope you don't mind I don't mean to be intrusive or put you under a spotlight, how do you view the Hadith/Sunnah of Muhammad as it is commonly known? You see, for me I guess its the way we use the term scripture and the way we apply that term to the Quran. And this is just a general food for thought question, including myself Do we imply that scripture is something from God or that it once was?

                Peace All.
I guess everyone has his own journey in shaping his perspective. This is my personal view on Koran and my own scientific approach to discover the existence of the God. It also provides a brief description of my background.

I was born into traditional Islam. I have a science background. I am a critical scientific explorer, to describe my mindset. Do i take things for granted from traditional Islam? No. At one point of time, I discard them as unscientific, unverified, inconsistent, contradictory and illogical body of knowledge. I disbelieve they came from God. So I became a disbeliever of traditional religion. I even began to wonder, Does God really exist? At that time to me my scientific understanding of life, the universe and human behavior/values are much superior, consistent, just and what have you in line with scientific reason based on objectivity, reliability, verifiable, and so on to become my worldview.

To me, the universal worldview based on science is more objective, logical, have perfect immutable and measurable laws. I use this universal common sense to make up my belief system to see things in perspective. It satisfies my judgment and reason on many questions about life. I am happy with the idea there is no God. I love to observe and learn about phenomena, physical and behavioral. I even took a class on world religions just to ask about God and to push forward my arguments. Nobody can prove me God exists.

I can readily accept theory of evolution, the big bang, with verifiable scientific evidence. Did I really observe and experience the big bang? No. I accept such findings from the position of logical empiricism and/or logical positivism. Scientific explanation of a phenomenon.

But i keep on wondering whether God really exists? Is there a Creator. I was comfortable with the idea that the universe come into existence naturally with a bang.

One day i attended a class, more of a discourse. Using the Quran, the lecturer, having a post-graduate science background, ask us to examine some verses mainly on phenomena of nature. It reflects my universal scientific thoughts. After that, I began to make my own research on certain concepts from the Quran, using logical scientific approach. What i discovered is amazing.

The content can be understood using common sense. The concept can be constructed using scientific reasoning. Precise, coherent, consistent, logical and comprehensive for a man to understand his history, future and the purpose of existence. This Book can't be written by man. The evidence is clear, it comes from the God, in Truth. It provides a comprehensive understanding of concepts which I have been pondering and wondering.

I have came to the discovery of the Creator and the concept of the God, in Truth. I am a firm believer of The God, Allah, and His words (ayats) to mankind via the Koran. It is the book of guidance.

"These are the ayaat (information) of Allah that We recite to you with truth. Then in what 'Hadith' (statement/narrative) after God and His 'Ayaat' will they believe?" (Koran 456)

That sounds interesting and fascinating. Can you elaborate and maybe provide an example?

Why, if the contents is consistent with man-made scientific findings, does this consistency point to or even prove divine origins?

                      Peace supportpeacenotwar,

You are right. The Message is bookless, and I have written it before in other threads, but thanks for highlighting it here. I should perhaps have added that notion in my previous post.

Well, the hadith around Muhammad reveal themselves as bogus in a hadith where it states "do not write down anything from me but the Quran". Also, the Quran itself clarifies that the hadith is not to be followed when it gives teachings which were not from God. "Had he (Muhammad) written down anything else than the Quran we would have stopped the revelations to him", the phrase makes it quite clear that all Muhammad was allowed to have written down was Quran, no matter if by himself or those who followed him. The Quran is perfectly detailed, you need no rules from another source than it.

It was not allowed to be written down anything other than Quran as there was not to be any misunderstandings. Yet there emerged so many problems with hadith even if the Quran is very clear about this.

I use to read the Bible, but that is only to verify what is already with me and some in-depth analysis of the Message.

The Bible was only written through inspiration. It means the prophets wrote basically their own experiences during their life and some secrets revealed by God, like the birth of Jesus and the coming of Muhammad. As you may already know, the Bible is in fact a collection of many small books or most could barely be called book but just a piece of parchment, a scroll. It is the testimonies of the prophets, followers and scribes at the time. Remember, this is incredibly long ago and not everyone was literate.

Quran is the only exact wordings of God, apart from the stone tablets given to Moses which seem to be long gone.

The Injeel is Jesus presence on Earth and he did not bring any book by himself, but his followers wrote down their experiences. Unfortunately, I think many versions of the Gospel were lost, and they were probably the more accurate ones. Even between protestants and Catholic NT there are differences. Note that the Gospel in my native language is called something with -Evangeliet, ie Injeel.

The Torah I think was the Law which was given on stone tablets to Moses and was later preached and defined further by Jesus as the Injeel.

The Quran mentions the Psalms, but those seem to be severely perverted by Christianity. I have not checked the Jewish scripture though, but the Bible's psalms have blasphemous mentions of Jesus who was not even born when the Psalms were inspired to David.

You could say that individual stories, like the one about Jonah in the Bible is its own book and this part of the Message. I have not yet understood if the individual scrolls of parchment, like Jonah, is part of the Torah or simply should be regarded as in the Quran as "Al-kitaab". I regard this defined Arabic word rather as the Message than a book. It fits the thought of the scrolls as part of the grand Message.

Also, books did not exist as they are referred to today, for they were written on parchment and not on paper. I doubt that there is no such book but a set of scrolls which form the Message. The Message is not limited to a physical form for I think it means the Knowledge and Wisdom of the people currently alive on Earth who aim at unveiling the Truth.

Like I say elsewhere in this post, the Message simply has three basic rules. The Commandments allegedly written on stone tablets were part of God's covenant with the Children of Israel as well as anyone choosing to follow God's covenant. If you follow what God decides for you He will bless you plentifully. However, now the Law is the Quran, because God lifted some prohibitions He earlier laid on the Children of Israel due to their transgressions. The Quran portrays the actual set of rules today and the remnants of the old Mosaic law lives on through it.

In that sense, Quran is all we need for it is detailed with all we need to know about laws and regulations. But the Bible can help you understand the individual stories about Messengers of old and give you tips on how to be righteous. I find the story of Jesus in the NT to help me to some extent, especially when it comes to being humble and making righteous decisions.

Remember, even Jesus came with minor changes, or rather clarifications, to make the Law easier for people who over-interpreted it. And Jesus also said things that a Believer could become an even better one, by refraining from looking at a woman with desire as it is to commit adultery with your soul.

If one refrains from committing the sins God mentions in Quran, God will fulfill His covenant and one will receive blessings giving this person an advantage over those who choose to disbelieve and not follow God's simple rules.

What all these scriptures, possibly also Zoroastrian and Buddhist etc ones, have in common is that they together form the Message. From what you mentioned yourself, the Message itself is bookless since there is only one universal Message; worship God alone, believe in the eternity of creation and be good. Note the last few words, "... and be good", for it is the part most people forget regarding the Message. Good means gain a peace of mind through careful nurturing of the soul through prayers, meditation and righteous deeds.

Okey, I hope I answered your questions and questions you did not ask about. I ran out of patience to write more, but I suppose I wrote too much already. I should not try to care so much about my fellow brothers and sisters... naw, you are worth hours of my private time and you can clearly see it. Follow the best (of what I wrote) and ignore the rest (it is my new secondary motto after "Everything is possible nothing is impossible&quot. And remember, always seek the Light, let the Light guide you.

May the Light be with you, always.

Yes, the Quran is very clear about this matter including in its terminology and use of the word hadith. This theme is further emphasised with the verses that you mention.

In that sense, Quran is all we need for it is detailed with all we need to know about laws and regulations. That sounds like a good way to go about it, especially as it reinforces the points about humility and so on. This would also be in accordance and support the advice Luqman gives to his son in the Quran.

What all these scriptures, possibly also Zoroastrian and Buddhist etc ones, have in common is that they together form the Message. Indeed and its very straightforward to do. All one needs to do is call upon their Creator for assistance whether they have a copy of a translation or not, whether they know Arabic or not. Allah swt provides all guidance.

Thanks again for your detailed response and taking the time to do write it. I appreciate the thought you've clearly put into it. I didn't expect this much to be honest, but its great, I really enjoy reading your posts!

May Allah swt always shower you with Mercy and blessings and may He guide all of us along the sirataal mustaqueem.

                            @zone

Thanks for sharing your story. I too am of scientific mind but sometimes it is debatable if I even have a mind. Anyhow, turning point for me was listening to neuroanatomy lecture in school and what the lecturer said basically threw me up against the wall. Same exact thing was said in the Koran. Given the times when prophet Muhammed lived, there is no way people in that time period could have known about neuroanatomy. And the description of various kinds of people in particular sociopaths has also lead me to believe that the Koran was not written by people of those times.

Given the content, subject matters and structure, hard to believe that people in those times could have composed it.

                              @man of faith,

Thanks for your post. I had been thinking along the same. If there is only one God, then there can be only one Message. As it is not in the essence of God to divide and conquer, causing animosity between groups, different religions with different scriptures saying different things and different rules are not God created but man created.

I often wondered if God created everyone then why would God tell the muslim community that they should pray a certain way facing a building structure and another community something different? Did God tell one community of people to pray a certain way and another group to pray a different way? Why would God designate a building as His house and tell one group to make a pilgrimage to a place but not others? Did God tell one group to behave and live a certain way and another group to behave and live in different way? It is ok for Christians to eat pork but not for Jews and Muslims? Why is that? Why would God forbid alcohol for Muslims but ok for others? If something is bad for one group shouldn't it be bad for all?

Did God give commands to one group considering them to be superior and would it be in the essence of God to do so? If all the "religions" are from God, why would it matter which group you belong to?

I have come to my current belief/conclusion that there is one God, one message, different messengers relaying basically the same message in different forms in different times. But people divided, disagreed, discarded, distorted, denied the message inserting and innovating their own rules and ways asserting that this is from God as a means to garner followers to believe in these innovations, each claiming that worship or whatever needs to be done in this manner or that manner.

The evidence is right in front of you, people have different ways of worship
from the north pole to the south pole.

Then we revealed to you this scripture, truthfully, confirming previous
scriptures, and superseding them. You shall rule among them in accordance
with GOD's revelations, and do not follow their wishes if they differ from the
truth that came to you. For each of you, we have decreed laws and different
rites. Had GOD willed, He could have made you one congregation. But
He thus puts you to the test through the revelations He has given each of you.
You shall compete in righteousness. To GOD is your final
destiny?all of you?then He will inform you of everything you had disputed.

                                  Thanks for posting this verse.

Which translation are you using? I use corpus Quran, 5 different translations and there are differences in the translation and depending on which one, you walk away with different understanding. The one that you posted says "different rites". Y. ALi translates as "To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way". Corpus quran translates as "clear way".

The message is the same and if the goal is to attain righteousness, then the laws also have to be the same. If drinking is forbidden for Muslims, then it should also be forbidden for Jews and Christians. If God had willed, surely he could have sent one messenger and that is it. But in the verse God explains why different messengers but the message is the same and the goal for each community is to vie for righteousness - not division, distortion, discrimination, innovation, etc.

I see Gods religion but not different separate religions, which are man created with different sects and denominations.

                                    Peace justamuslim,

I think I read a verse in the Bible which tells Believers not to drink that they become drunk. I will try to look into the matter. I should have taken notes when I read it.

I think the verse in Quran means not to become intoxicated as in drunk. Anything can make you intoxicated basically. Well, it is a matter of interpretation, but best is to abstain completely.

Regarding pork, it is forbidden for Christians as they follow the Mosaic law. Jesus practically taught it with some clarifications and further defining God's religion.

Still, everything from God is recommendations, the Quran is a guidebook and you choose yourself to follow it. It is like following recommendations of a professional doctor who knows us best. God knows best what is good for us.

                                    God bless you

Not necessarily, there could be multiple Messages.. depending on the context of the society or individual recipients of the message.

Example "Monotheism" hardly being mentioned within the Gospel by Jesus, because the jewish society at his time are all monotheist already, yet the main problem was Hypocrisy of the religious elites, sectarian arrogance and hatred.

As it is not in the essence of God to divide and conquer, causing animosity between groups, different religions with different scriptures saying different things and different rules are not God created but man created.

The best mechanism to maintain order within a group of human is through 'check and balance'.
Something which the human themselves discovered recently and the same principles is being applied into state politics or company/organizations.

I often wondered if God created everyone then why would God tell the muslim community that they should pray a certain way facing a building structure and another community something different? Did God tell one community of people to pray a certain way and another group to pray a different way?

God never told the 'technicality details' of the praying.. or praying is not a ritual..
Praying is for men not men for praying.

Why would God designate a building as His house and tell one group to make a pilgrimage to a place but not others?

The "not others" is a misconception..

Did God tell one group to behave and live a certain way and another group to behave and live in different way?

                                      Not in principles..

Did God give commands to one group considering them to be superior and would it be in the essence of God to do so? If all the "religions" are from God, why would it matter which group you belong to?

All "religions" are not from God, it's all human invention yet it doesn't mean that it's all bad either..
And human always claim that his group / society is 'superior' than others..

It is all so simple belief in God and the last day, living a righteous, moral life and doing good deeds.

Playing a 'broker to God' is a lucrative business... that's why certain people invented 'religion'.

They create complex rules and rites and name of the God or Gods to differentiate themselves from other competing religion.
They declare certain things to be holy (read must not be questioned), thus their lies shall not be uncovered.
Then they will ask the member of the religion to pay certain share of their income, as a 'tithe' to the God or Gods of course and certain share of the crops or flocks as sacrifice to the God or Gods and certain 'individuals' (which they hate) as human sacrifice to the God or Gods.

For many centuries the above 'business model' works great, until few centuries ago when 'rationality' and 'critical thinking' ability of the society in general started to develop. People then have the guts to question things which are (considered) to be holy thus their lies are getting exposed, their followers decline in numbers and their business is continuously shrinking as we speak.

                                      Salam / Peace

That sounds interesting and fascinating. Can you elaborate and maybe provide an example?

Why, if the contents is consistent with man-made scientific findings, does this consistency point to or even prove divine origins?

                                        Peace StopS.

After the discourse i studied Laws of Nature, that there are Laws governing the universe, that every phenomenon existed has its function, theory of evolution, information theory, the concept of man, religion (deen=system), the origin and beginnings of man (Adam), to name a few. I wouldn't want to explain in detail which concept and which philosophical position to take for the examination or careful study which include logical positivism, logical empiricism, rules theory, constructivism. Suffice to say that there are certain rules and certain hypothethetical questions and certain theoretical positions to take and have with reference to the current scientific body of knowledge to refer to.

My objective of study at that time is to see whether the contents of the Koran makes sense in the light of scientific findings and by studying certain word, building inter-relationships among related words, concepts can be constructed clearly through scientific reasoning. Anyhow the findings are eye-openers to me which lead me to establish my own hypothetical position whether this Koran is really written by the Creator of the universe, the unseen God. I wouldn't want to delve on the details of the assumptions i made about a Creator or God.

I have written some of my discoveries in general magazines, presented in a seminar and supposed to be published in a journal based in London. But, i got into trouble with the religious authorities. From the information theory, the conclusion obtained challenged the relevancy of hadith and writings of traditional scholars as primary source in the building blocks of major concepts related to the God (Allah) Belief system.

They consider ayaats of Allah in the Koran and the universe in Truth as the frame of reference for an ethical man to discover Allah System is considered to be a destructive mechanism in the ability of man to know and uphold their traditional belief system, which they claim as the truth to be protected and preserved.

As for me, the question whether the Koran is the God's words to mankind is answered.

Many people may have observed something falling to the ground, Newton's conclusion and explanation make a breakthrough understanding of a phenomenon.

From my experience the ayaat is organically fulfilling when you study them carefully, i am not sure that's the best way to describe it. Of course, you can discover errors made by translators, which because of the wrong word used, cloud its clarity, accuracy and consistency.
