Salaam - "to angels/fellow believers" or "an end to prayer"

Salam alaykum,
i would appreciate different view points on this question - i apologise in advance and with hindsight of this question has been raised before... as i have not trawled trough the post lists to find it..question after salat.. when we say asalaam alaykum to right and left.. who are we saying this to..?
salat in this context is the genuflections which include standing, bowing and prostration to God.. with the intention to acclaim God/remember/ praise/worship Him..
i am not questiong the concept of salat but i am rather interested in what the salut( asalaam alaykum) contributes to the prayer..there is the notion of its to the right and left recording angels, fellow believers etc( remember this from childhood)
there is another notion salaam signals an end to the prayer to the fellow congregation.but i ask - if one is doing salat alone.. is the asalaam alaykum vital.. if yes why.. it boils down back to the question. who are we salaaming to and why..

If worship is for God alone, I have a hard time understanding the Salaam to angels, jinn, human or whoever. I also have a hard time understanding the durood Sunnis recite while sitting down. Think about it, when Prophet Muhammad was alive&prayed Salat, do you think he sent blessings upon himself? Sounds more like human nature to men into Gods to me.

Yeah according to Sunni we say Assalamualaikum fo the Malaykat in our right and left (Raqib and Atid) and it's has nothing to do in Quranic teaching
