I am soooo hungry
-
Hi, I am fasting today, but I did not eat anything since last night (at 800 pm). Its been like 15 hours now and I've got 8 more hours to go. My stomach hurts and is making noise and I feel bad cry cry cry
can I end the fast for today or is G-O-D gonna hate me 4ever? -
Peace be upon you,
Why are you fasting?
-
Oh God, another wiered question....take a wild guess

Hungry person,

Hmmm, you worship "scholars" unknowingly instead of studying for yourself?
-
Peace be upon you Hungry person,
Now that I have responded to your sarcasm with mine, lets reason this out. WHY are you fasting? If you don't know why, it is best just to say so.
-
"Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation."
That's why. Do you not fast?

Peace Hungry_person,
My stomach hurts and is making noise and I feel bad...
Actually it's in your mind. Think about it. winkcan I end the fast for today or is G-O-D gonna hate me 4ever?

That should have answered you question -
Thanks warda and zenje (funny name, reminds me of a zuchinni
warda, I guess I won't end the fast because I guess now my body is using the excess fat calories stored (not that I am fat, but we all have some amounts of it). I'll hopefully hold off til 600 pm...............I really need to wake up b4 sunrise and put some food in my gut......that way i won't be so darn hungry..
P.S. What's up with some wiered people here who blame anyone and everyone of "idol worship"? Its like a witch hunt.....he's an idol worrshipper....no she's an idolworshipper.....ha ha ha. SHUT UP! As far as i know, the QURAN commands us to fast and I am in no need for any scholars telling me how to lead my life. I verify the facts for myself and follow GOD and GOD is my judge. I need nobody's guidance as I am not in search of a god.

If you are referring to the traditional understanding as taught by the "scholars", then no. There are a few reasons why. First, abstaining(not fasting because Mary abstained from talking) is to be done during 'ramadhan'. I have not found when this time is yet for certain. What I do know is that when people BEFORE THE ARABIC MONTH RAMADHAN WAS CREATED abstained, it wasn't during the ARABIC MONTH called "ramadhan". The ARABIC MONTH "Ramadhan" is a recent invention, abstaining was decreed to ALL PEOPLE.
Next, I have not found sufficient evidence that we are to abstain from eating and drinking, I do not see that instruction.
There are other reasons as well which can be found in the "sawm" section of this forum and under the "shahr/moon" section as well.
Lastly, since I have not come to a sure understanding of what is being asked by "abstaining", I do not just go back to the "defualt" of tradition, I obey the God when He instructs
(1736) And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge...
The above reasoning was why I answered you the way I did, I wanted to see if you would respond with a clear reason as to why you "fast", but you took it as a wierd question.
-
well i am sure idol, just like me you are in no need of someone telling you what/how to believe when you are damn sure you know what you are doing....so i won't further respond to this topic.
as for where it says in the quran to abstain from eating/drinking, here it is
........... You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until sunset. ..........
but of course, some might find exceptions in this too.

How can I be "damn sure" when I said that I have no knowledge of the process of abstaining? Further, my goal is not to "believe" anything, only to have faith in the unchanging laws that, when worked along with, one can obtain a peaceful mentality.

The verse says you should ABSTAIN, not fast, what are you to ABSTAIN from? If you look at the entire verse, it is talking about sex. Also, eating and drinking are not always used literally in the reading (731).
Are you able to answer the question of the word "ramadhan' and howthe people before its conception abstained for the "month of ramadhan"?

Salaam Hungry_person,
I am so glad that you didn't end your fast. That was very smart of you. And as Zein (Zenje) said "It is all in the mind".
The other day I was loading on dates and yogurt on Suhoor, thinking that I still have time to drink water before Fajr Prayer. The tv was on and suddenly there came the calling for Fajr! Oh my God! I was so thirsty after all those dates and wanted to believe that the tv was wrong! And that the Athan went earlier than it's supposed to!!! But the Athan from the nearby mosques was too loud to deny! I was so frustrated but somehow managed to push that frustration out of my mind. Thankfully, the day went just fine and I even carried on with my daily work out routine before the Magrib time. DTaj

Peace be upon you Taj,
Why are you happy that hungry person did not stop thier fast? Does it effect your deeds?
You can grab one of those ritual beads and say " I am happy hungry person did not stop thier fast" 100 times a day, that does not make it correct.
If evidence can be shown as to why people are abstaining from food and drink right now (is sex also restricted during the day?) then I can agree that hungry person is smart, but I have yet to see it. Has someone posted the proper understanding in the "ramadhan" section and I missed it? Or is everyone standing on a sandy cliff?
-
Salaams Kyle,
Why are you happy that hungry person did not stop thier fast? Does it effect your deeds?
It emphasized the fact that I am not alone and so maximizes my determination! I love to see people having control over their weaknesses. Doesn't that make you at all happy, Kyle?

If I can say you are crazy, I would say it! roll But I can't! lol

Yes, I love that as well, very much so. But my concern is that no one has stated exactly how they came to the conclusion that we are to be fasting right now. This concerns me because I do believe that most of us here really do want to know the truth, but I think some are settling for tradition until they figure out if it is right or not. And i only say that because no one has shown the understanding of "ramadhan" in detail.

Thats fine, you can call me crazy, but please think about what I am saying. We are told not to go after that which we have no knowledge, can you say you have knowledge about why you are fasting today?
If you do, please do not conceal the truth, if you don't, it is against the message to be fasting right now. I do not have the knowledge right now. I thought I was close, but today I found I am back at square one. (

Salaams Kyle,
What more proof than the Ayat do you need?
I am fasting today, and have been as far as I remember, because that is what I have learned from my family first of course, and then from what I understand/understood from the Quran.
I have learned that the verb Ramadha-Yarmudhu (Ramadhan is derived from it) means to burn, and that is why Ramadhan has been named so because it burn our sins.I do not have the knowledge right now. I thought I was close, but today I found I am back at square one.
Don't despair! Why don't you try to fast tomorrow for a change, maybe you will get the answer, from within?

Peace be upon you Taj,

Respectfully sister, which verse(s) are you referring to? I do not see the full detail of the traditional "fast" at all. I honestly ask you, if you have time, to present it to me in detail, with the relevant verses. If you are sure about it, PLEASE help me to understand it. Because I do not.
I am fasting today, and have been as far as I remember, because that is what I have learned from my family first of course, and then from what I understand/understood from the Quran.
Are you certain that your parents teachings did not sway your understanding when searching for it in the reading(quran)? This is something that we must be careful of, and I know you already know this, but I wanted to say it anyway. Please share your understanding.
I have learned that the verb Ramadha-Yarmudhu (Ramadhan is derived from it) means to burn, and that is why Ramadhan has been named so because it burn our sins.
Where do we get this understanding of sins being burnt? I recall the "imam" at the mosque I used to go to teaching that, but I don't see that in the reading. In fact, the "imam" used to say the "burning" was your stomach getting hot from being hungry, or something like that. Why do "sins" need to be burned? Why cant we just stop sinning? If the fire was cool for Abraham, why do the faithful need to be burned? This traditional method just does not add up. And when we look how EVERY ONE of the so called 5 pillars is corrupted, why do we think this concept has been kept in tact?

I am not despiaring, just eager to get to the corrct understanding which I am confident will come if I stay on the path. I have "fasted" since 1995, this is the first year I have not followed the path that I have no knowledge of. Also, the word Sawn means "abstain" not "fast", so what would I abstain from?
To be honest, I think it might be dealing with abstaining from sex. The ancients taught that SEXUAL ENERGY was on the opposite pole (like hot and cold, day and night) from MENTAL ENERGY. So it would make sense that at the time the reading is revealed, we should abstain from sex to keep our minds fresh. When we think sexually, we become very "wordly".
But I am still trying to figure this out.
Again, please give me any info that you think will help me understand your position.

I don't really like to promote terms of seperation, but since this is our situation today, my cultural background is African-American.
