    Salam.

Do you think poligamy can be abolished especially in developing or developed countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Malaysia etc?

As far as I know, according to Quran, poligamy is only allowed in helping mothers of fatherless children and the limit is 4 but poligamy is not encouraged. It is monogamy that is encouraged. Pardon me if I am wrong.

I don't understand why some people interpret the verse 43 into "...twos, threes, fours...". Is this kind of interpretation intended to justify men marrying countless women?

In my country, poligamy is popular amongs "pious" men and most of the wives of the poligamous men wear Saudi niqab. Some of the wives are neither orphans nor widows but they are very young sometimes. It seems to me like arranged marriage.

"Poligamy is Prophet's sunna. Following it will get rewards from Allah". This is what most scholars love saying and they love using Bukhari & Co's masterpieces to justify their poligamous desires. All they know is how to be just towards their wives in terms of turns in bed.

This kind of poligamy is popular among members of Saudi royal family especially the Kings. Just search King Faisal or any other kings of KSA.

But thank God Saudi Arabia is still blessed with non-poligamous and non-misogynistic billionaire who has done a lot of good job. He is Al Waleed bin Talal and his 2nd wife who is the only wife he currently has, Ameera al-Taweel is one of the most influential Saudi women and Al Waleed does not force his wife to cover up like typical Saudi and he does not hide his wife in the royal palace like typical KSA royal family members do.

Most men who practice poligamy just want more s*x. That's why many of them marry rich non-orphan virgins. Some of their wives do not even live with each other and some even live in different cities and countries! What's the use of this kind of poligamy?

I think poligamy can only be practised in places like Gaza to help the widows whose husbands are martyred.

    Peace.

I think it should, but can we force people by law not to take up polygamy? I don't know. However I believe 43 says marrying an orphan girl/mother of orphan is ONLY after Allah said "If you fear you will not be JUST towards the orphans", meaning if after you've already tried to do right by them, but you fail/or fear you cannot keep it up/or want to do more righteousness for them, then to marry up to 4 of orphan girls/orphan mothers.

It requires a need for justice and righteousness for the allowed polygamy. Therefore no man can marry for any other reason, I don't think. So perhaps men who are seeking this kind of marriage, need to prove that they do in deed care about orphan welfare, before they carry on.

        Salam.

Why should it be abolished? Polygamy is a great idea. I love it. I can have 4 wives. Yeeehah Just kidding.

If Polygamy is non-quranic it might be abolished in muslim countries in the future. However, it seems that polygamy is sanctioned by Al Quran.

As far as I know, according to Quran, poligamy is only allowed in helping mothers of fatherless children and the limit is 4 but poligamy is not encouraged. It is monogamy that is encouraged. Pardon me if I am wrong.

My current view is similar to your view. Polygamy is only allowed in situations concerning orphans, and marrying their mothers to be able to take care of the orphans. Also, a man can only marry 4 wifes. According to history Polygamy was a common practice at the Prophets time. Therefore it would be impractical to suddenly abandon it. Perhaps that's why it is allowed by Al Quran and at the same time is discouraged. By allowing Polygamy and at the same time discouraging it, this practice might eventually fade away. Al Quran sets a limit of 4 wives. At the Prophets time, the arabs might have had more than 4 wives. So by setting a limit of 4 wives, polygamy would decrease in the society. Having said all this, according to Al Quran, the Sunnah of Allah never changes. Therefore, if polygamy was not allowed in earlier scriptures e.g. Torah and Injeel, then why should it suddenly be allowed in Al Quran? Did Allah change his Sunnah just to let his laws fit the prevalent practices at the Prophets time? Does that sound reasonable? These are questions we should ponder on.

The idea of Polygamy might be non-Quranic. It might be based on a mistranslation of verse 43 in Al Quran. It seems that there is something fishy about it. As far as I know, no one has done a comprehensive study on the idea of Polygamy in Al Quran. Perhaps I will study it in a comprehensive way in the future...If God wills.

In his exposition of Al Quran the Islamic Scholar Ghulam Ahmad Parwez explains why he thinks polygamy is allowed

3 But the problem of orphans (or those left alone in the society) is not solved simply by taking care of their property ? it has other implications as well. For instance, if a situation arises, out of a war or otherwise ? where a large number of men die, leaving behind widows and orphans, or you have a large number of marriageable women who cannot find husbands (4/127) and they cannot marry outside your circle; so if you cannot find an equitable solution to this problem then permission is hereby given to you to relax the Law of monogamy and those amongst you who can afford it and can treat all justly can marry two or three or four women of their liking. But if you fear that you cannot do justice, then only one or the female captives who are already in your charge. This will relieve you from the burden of a large family.

I also recommend an article about Polygamy by Aidid Safar.

          Salaam Mario and PixelAngelBaby

Actually I meant abolition of poligamy in developing or developed country. I didn't mean all countries. I said this because most men become poligamous because of their own desires. I have heard a lot of men marry more than one wife and then divorce and then marry and then divorce and then the total spouses a man has ever had will become 14+. And the man will have 30+ children. Just like typical Saudi Royal Family male members.

Furthermore, in modern societies, both women and men usually hold good positions at workplaces and have great incomes. So most widows in many developing or developed countries do not need financial help from others. Some widows just want to stay widowed until death because they love their late husbands very much. Most women today want faithful partners.

I know poligamy may be required in the cases of poverty and the lands of warmongering. But don't make little girls as victims of poligamy. I know a lot of people claim that there are more women than men but it does not mean that those women accept poligamy. Some may want to stay single forever without having boyfriends or husbands.

Or maybe the permission of poligamy should be made more limited by court.

p/s I have read a thread on poligamy started by Mazhar last December and I read either sunna-hero or sunnah-hero's posts. He said a user named released was feminist and he said he wanted men's rights. Hello! Men have already had too much rights in "Muslim" countries! Duh.

I have already written this in other threads, but 4.3 is nto at all about poloigamy. The whole community is addressed and as such the members of the community who are capable of doing so, should arrange for the marriage of the mothers of the fatherless children of the sake of doing justice to those children. It doesn't say at all that a man should marry one, two, three, four, but that one, two, three four or whichever number should be arranged, and if not able to be just in greater numbers just arrange one. The addressee is plural, so to think that one man is marrying one, to four wives is not warranted. Also, it is weird that traditional jurisprudence while supporting poligamy up to four what it has never condoned is to marry more than one at the same time. And that is what is meant in the aya. To think that one man of a go can marry four is a bit folkloric. Will they make a lotery to see which one is going in first?

The qur'an does not forbid polygamy either femine poligamy or masculine, but it makes it clear abundantly that the usual marriage, the ordinary and normally established marriage is monogamous.

It is therefore up to each society to wiegh its demographic state and needs and determine whether it is advisable to forbid poligamy or not. It should the in the best interests of the society ehatever it does, not to uphold any previledge for anybody.

            Salaam

According to Quranists, a person can marry 18 wives

If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, Mathnaa wa Thulaatha wa Rubaa'

              Mathna (a pair of 2)=4

              Thulatha (a pair of 3)=6

              Rubaa (a pair of 4)=8

Total marriages allowed according to Quranist principle = 18

Oh really? You keep defending your blasphemous sectarian. We Quranists do not support that kind of marriage. Maybe there are a few Quranists who are evil but they are no more evil than Wahhabi fanatics. In fact Wahhabis are the ones who love multiple wives. Many of them take young virgins just to fulfill their naughtiness and lusts.

According to your blasphemous sunnism, husbands can nullify their marriages with their wives forever by saying I divorce you with THREE talaqs

You see how evil is your talaq law and according to sunnism, forced-marriage is allowed. This goes against Quran.

Maybe this is the best answer. But I cannot rush into conlusion. Thanks for making it clear.

                      Peace,

As far as I have understood the marriage according to 43 is to save the orphans, especially during the harsh era in which the Quran was revealed. However, I guess this marriage is a bit "special" and not the usual one. It is definitely not to sexually or socially please the men, that is not the God I know to allow that. It might be a temporary contract to allow the women to stay under the same ceiling for protection and sustenance. Polygamy as per traditional understanding is not something sanctioned by God.

                      God bless you
