Ar-Rahman from the root word of "RAHM" literally means "Mother's Womb".
In less-literal context it can also means "Caring, Nurturing, Protecting Love", in similar manner as Mother's Womb to the baby (or babies) within.

I know about the root word womb.
But it did not answer my question why the monotheist translation uses the word Almighty for Rahman ???

so if rahman is translated almighty. how about the word "azeez" - which was used for almighty in previous translations.
Also, since arabic words are based on root words in this case it is RHM - pertaining to care, mercy, - I don't see 'mighty' as in 'power' in that root word.

I wasn't a part of the translation group. My response was to answer partially why it was probably translated as Almighty, i.e. the contrast argument. You may want to send Layth a PM/email to inquire further regarding what the process was in their case specifically, and why it was chosen instead of other alternatives.

As that article states the references of the word rahman in (19) 85-96 are pretty convincing.

Well, since Azeez is being translated as Noble.
and Gracious is not suitable for Rahman.
RAHMAN can be Almighty or Omnipotent or All powerful.

Al-3Aziz does not mean The Almighty or The Noble as per my current knowledge.
At the moment I am a little bit tired (=lazy) to write how I see it -[
